Liquor firm boss charged with evading duty on 60,000 bottles Thu, Apr 17, 2008 The Straits Times THE boss of a liquor company was charged on Thursday with 18 counts of fraudulently evading excise duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) on more than 60,000 bottles of liquor by using duty exemption permits. Giorgio Ferrari, 39, managing director of Giogrio Ferrari, is accused of eight charges each under the Customs Act and GST Act between January and October last year. He is said to have evaded duty amounting to $708,759 and GST totalling $86,597 by purportedly declaring that 64,806 bottles of assorted liquor were for diplomatic missions' use. The bottles were then allegedly removed mostly from The Licensed Warehouse. Ferrari was represented by Mr Shashi Nathan and Mr Navin Lobo. The prosecution told the court that more charges would be brought against Ferrari and asked for a four-week adjournment. He is out on $200,000 bail and his passport was impounded. The case will be mentioned on April 30. If convicted under the Customs Act, Ferrari faces a fine of between 10 and 20 times the amount of the customs duty or tax or $5,000, whichever is lesser. Set up in 2000, the company supplies spirits and wine to restaurants, hotels, night-spots, supermarkets and embassies. It has 250 to 300 standard products with a full portfolio of over 8,000 labels
