Facebook on Thursday announced that it has changed its company name to Meta. The name change was announced at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference. The new name reflects the company’s growing ambitions beyond social media. Facebook, now known as Meta, has adopted the new moniker, based on the sci-fi term metaverse, to describe its vision for working and playing in a virtual world. The company also said in announcing the new name that it will change its stock ticker from FB to MVRS, effective Dec. 1. Meta’s stock price closed up on Thursday. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/business/facebook-changes-name-meta-it-refocuses-virtual-reality-2276266 From what I understand, the rebranding will only take place for its parent company. And for most of us, we probably don't care but why Meta? What's Meta. Here's what Meta means. https://about.facebook.com/meta

The name is inspired by a sci-fi concept known as the metaverse -- and the company formerly known as Facebook is betting that it represents the future of the internet. But what exactly is the metaverse, and why are companies like Google, Tencent and Nvidia so excited about it? What is the "metaverse" concept and how long has it been around? The term "metaverse" was coined by Neal Stephensen in his science fiction novel "Snow Crash." It describes a virtual world where humans interact with one another through the use of digital avatars. Movies such as "The Matrix" and "Ready Player One" explore this idea. Now, real-life tech players believe it is possible to not only create such immersive digital worlds but also to integrate them with our physical reality. Facebook envisions a scenario in which two people virtually attend the same concert despite being miles away from the venue -- and each other. Or, co-workers in different countries could collaborate as if they were in the same room. Think of it as virtual reality on steroids. Key technologies will include human-computer interface devices such as VR and AR headsets, multidimensional graphics and AI simulations, massive computing power and software and hardware for creating user avatars, to name just a few. Why are companies so interested in the metaverse? Tech companies are looking for the next frontier now that the internet, social media and smartphones have become everyday tools. Facebook, which also makes the Oculus, the world's most popular VR headset, sees the metaverse as "the successor to the mobile internet," Zuckerberg said when the company announced its rebranding. Microsoft, Apple and Google are also pouring resources into virtual and augmented reality tech. Nvidia, the world's most valuable chip developer, has embraced the metaverse with enthusiasm. To promote its Omniverse platform, the company in April held an entirely digital event; even CEO Jensen Huang was digitally simulated. "Omniverse is the engine to create and simulate the virtual world ... and it also allows different agents, different people to connect to the virtual world," Huang told a news briefing on Wednesday. "The metaverse could mean a lot of things to a lot of people, but Omniverse, as we described, has immediate applications today," he added, describing how his company is already using it for a range of applications, including creating a digital copy of the real world in which to test self-driving vehicles. China's tech titans also sense opportunities. Social and video gaming giant Tencent has filed nearly a hundred metaverse-related trademark applications since September, while e-commerce giant Alibaba has registered several related trademarks. A day after Facebook announced its name change, Baidu, the Chinese search engine giant, applied to trademark the term "metaapp." In hardware, Foxconn, the world's largest contract electronics manufacturer, intends to be part of the metaverse supply chain. "The next two big things in the tech industry are electric vehicles and [the] metaverse," Chairman Young Liu said. "Foxconn will definitely have metaverse-related products." What are the technical challenges? Giving users an immersive experience will require fast, low-latency transfers of massive amounts of data. That means wireless 5G connectivity will be a must. Other requirements include high-powered semiconductors to run complex algorithms and devices like VR headsets to enable users to duck into the digital world. Technical hurdles remain. Current VR headsets are heavy and often have issues with visual resolution, causing feelings of dizziness or nausea after extended use. And advanced computing capabilities such as gesture navigation will significantly eat up battery life. Content will be crucial to the success of the metaverse, but 3D modeling software --- integral for building an immersive alt-universe -- is still more expensive than what many developers can afford. What are there skeptics saying? While companies race to embrace the metaverse, analysts are a bit more cautious. Donnie Teng, a tech analyst with Nomura Securities, told Nikkei Asia that the hype around the metaverse is merely the next stage in the ongoing search for ways to put VR and AR technologies to better use. "The concept has been around for quite some time, but it's still emerging, and people are still exploring the possibilities, with no clear answer," Teng said. "At the end of the day, it's still whether there is a good enough tech infrastructure and applications out there to really realize this dream of building a fully virtual metaverse." Are there any other concerns? Data privacy and cybersecurity. Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen said in an interview with the Associated Press that the metaverse "will require us to put many, many more sensors in our homes and our workplaces," she said, adding that the company "should have a transparency plan for the metaverse before they start building all this stuff." Haugen is not the only one urging caution. David Reid, professor of AI and Spatial Computing at Liverpool Hope University, is calling for regulation of the metaverse before the "technology becomes a reality in the next five to 10 years," he said in a statement. "The metaverse has huge implications -- it comes with fantastic advantages and terrifying dangers," Reid said. "We're clearly in the very early stages of the metaverse, but we need to start talking about these problems now before we go down a route we can't reverse away from," he added. "It's crucial for the future."

Facebook Removes Accounts With AI-Generated Profile Photos Facebook on Friday removed what it called a global network of more than 900 accounts, pages, and groups from its platform and Instagram that allegedly used deceptive practices to push pro-Trump narratives to about 55 million users. The network used fake accounts, artificial amplification, and, notably, profile photos of fake faces generated using artificial intelligence to spread polarizing, predominantly right-wing content around the web, including on Twitter and YouTube. Facebook’s investigation connected The BL to The Epoch Times, a conservative media organization with ties to Chinese spiritual group Falun Gong and a history of aggressive support for Donald Trump. Ostensibly a US-based media organization, The BL network’s pages were operated by users in Vietnam and the US, who Facebook says made widespread use of fake accounts to evade detection and funnel traffic to its own websites. It represents an alarming new development in the information wars, as it appears to be the first large-scale deployment of AI-generated images in a social network. https://www.wired.com/story/facebook-removes-accounts-ai-generated-photos/#intcid=recommendations_wired-right-rail-popular_b5c81ee4-f065-4e23-81be-216273db9d3f_popular4-1 In below, the left, admins for “Patriots for President Trump,” nine out of 15 of which used AI-generated faces, researchers said. Urban myth As drivers, we all have heard of the myth that the police will always penalise the driver for knocking down a cyclist (or pedestrians too) - even if they don't look out for traffic. It's common beliefs like this that make drivers extremely anxious when they encounter run-ins with cyclists. However, one fellow driver proved this belief wrong as he shared his experience after getting in an accident with a cyclist. According to the Facebook post by Jacky Ang, he was driving out of a carpark in Ang Mo Kio in July when a cyclist appeared unexpectedly. Not wanting to hit the cyclist, Mr Ang stepped on his brakes. After seeing the cyclist fall in front of his vehicle, he stepped out of his car and offered to help. The day after The day after this incident, Mr Ang said that he had contacted the cyclist and offered to send him to the clinic for his injuries. However, the cyclist rejected his offer. A few days later, the cyclist sent Mr Ang a message wanting to claim his car insurance for his medical bills. Luckily for him, Mr Ang had already made a police report on the day of the accident. In the end After conducting initial investigations, the Singapore Traffic Police told Mr Ang that they will be charging the cyclist for failing to stop and look out for oncoming traffic. Relieved, Mr Ang posted about his experience online, encouraging other drivers to not be afraid of placing a police report for road incidents. Netizens’ reactions Mr Ang's post quickly went viral with netizens, who took to the comments to share about their own experiences as well. Drivers (and cyclists) can learn a valuable lesson from Mr Ang's experience - Do not be afraid of lodging a police report if you ever find yourself in a similar situation. -------- Thinking of selling your car? sgCarMart Quotz guarantees the highest selling price for your car. https://www.techspot.com/news/88207-whatsapp-forcing-users-share-data-facebook-unless-youre.html WhatsApp is forcing users to share data with Facebook, unless you're living in the EU Surrender your personal data, or else By Adrian Potoroaca, on January 7, 2021, 9:07 PM 15 comments What just happened? Apple's latest iOS privacy update is pushing companies like Facebook into fight of flight mode. This is why WhatsApp has decided to impose a new policy on its users if they want to continue using the service, with the exception of people who live in the EU. This week, Facebook-owned WhatsApp started giving users a pop-up alert that looks a lot like an ultimatum for people who want to continue using the app. Essentially, it says that people need to agree to new terms of service by February 8 or risk losing access to your WhatsApp next month. The revamped set of requirements is also a reversal on a one-time decision in 2016 that allowed users to opt out of having their account data turned over to Facebook. This includes phone numbers, friends' phone numbers, profile names and pictures, status messages and activity status, as well as detailed diagnostic data from app logs. However, the new policy means Facebook reserves the right to share the data collected within its family of online platforms. Furthermore, there will be cases where Facebook decides to share that data with third parties, which has privacy groups riled up again. The move is in response to Apple's new privacy labels on iOS 14, which highlight all the different ways certain free apps collect information about their users. This was particularly revealing for the Facebook family of apps, which happens to have the most extensive list of all. It shouldn't come as a big surprise that Facebook is so adamant in collecting all that metadata, as the company makes most of its revenue from advertising. Last month, it plunged into a public image feud with Apple using several newspaper ads, but their effect has yet to produce any results. As for the Cupertino company, they say they're simply encouraging app makers to be more forthcoming with how they monetize their apps. When WhatsApp's in-app alert hit the first users, some speculated that it would spark regulatory scrutiny in the EU, which is known for having stricter privacy rules. However, WhatsApp's Irish subsidiary said in a statement today that while European users are shown the same prompt to agree to the revamped privacy policy, in their case it doesn't include sharing that data with Facebook's other online platforms or third parties. A WhatsApp spokeswoman explained "there are no changes to WhatsApp’s data sharing practices in the European region arising from the updated terms of service and privacy policy. For the avoidance of any doubt, it is still the case that WhatsApp does not share European region WhatsApp user data with Facebook for the purpose of Facebook using this data to improve its products or advertisements." This was further confirmed by the company's director of policy for the EMEA region, Niamh Sweeney. The fact still remains that users outside the EU have to agree to a higher degree of data sharing, stressing the need for tougher privacy regulation in the United States, as well as other regions with permissive environments. In the meantime, smaller iOS developers are getting creative with how they subvert Apple's privacy update for iOS users. 15 comments 342 interactions

Facebook and Google employees to work from home until 2021
StreetFight3r posted a topic in Lite & EZ
https://mothership.sg/2020/05/facebook-google-work-from-home/ Tech giants Facebook and Google have announced that employees will be allowed to continue working from home until the end of the year. Both companies made the announcement last week. According to CNBC, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on May 7 that while company offices would begin to reopen on July 6, employees who can work remotely can continue to do so. The social media platform was still deciding which employees would have to come in for work. Google offices to reopen in either June or July Likewise, Business Insider reported Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google's parent company Alphabet, as telling employees on May 8 that they would likely be working from home for the rest of year. Google offices will reopen in either June or July for those who cannot work remotely. The moves represent an extension of work from home policies for both companies; Facebook and Google initially told employees that telecommuting would end halfway through the year. CNBC reported that Facebook has provided support to employees in the form of a US$1,000 (S$1,416) bonus, video-calling devices, and allowing them to take time off work. Work from home to continue post-circuit breaker In Singapore, the government has also indicated that work from home would continue even after circuit breaker measures have been lifted. Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing told reporters on May 3, that he expected work-from-home arrangements to continue for the "foreseeable future".- 17 replies

Singer rants on Facebook about cars making "loud explosive noise"
chitchatboy posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
A popular local Singer/Songwriter has taken to her facebook page to rant about cars making loud explosive noises where she lives. 1 bang 2.mp4 In her post, Beverly Morata Grafton pointed out in her post she has been experiencing "exhausts have been popping off like gunshots from 10:30pm and counting. And like every weekend since mid April, they will do so until 4am plus in the morning..." From her photos and videos that she provided, we gathered that these incidents happenen along Yishun Ave 1, where Sinopec Yishun is situated at. This stretch has a speed camera but car enthusiasts are known to still gun their cars there while heading towards the Yishun Dam. We will not go into the rest of her post as it can be a bit demeaning and vulgar. For those who are curious, you can view her post below. In the video that was taken on the 25th of April, we could identify a white Volkswagen Golf accelerating away quickly from the petrol station before letting off some loud bangs, much to the annoyance of the songwriter. Being a post on the writer's personal page, it was no surprise to find the comments supporting her views. But what do you guys think? More pops and bangs for everyone? Or should we cooperate for quieter neighbourhoods?- 6 comments

One website that really deserves to be banned is STR!! They are partly responsible for instilling fear amongst Singaporeans during DORSCON Orange asking Singaporeans to stock up at least 6 months worth of food and essentials in one of their Facebook posts. . The owner of the website Alex is now hiding in Australia.. . Is there no way the Government can shutdown the website? Singaporeans need to unite during this period. Hit back at the Pap during elections if you are unsatisfied with the government but this is the time to be united and not divided.. . Certainly don't need a website like STR to stir shit.... Some ppl jus wanna watch the world burn... https://www.straitstimes.com/politics/coronavirus-govt-invokes-fake-news-law-against-false-claims-by-states-times-review?utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=STFB&utm_source=Facebook#Echobox=1581692638 SINGAPORE - The States Times Review (STR) Facebook page was on Friday (Feb 14) ordered under the fake news law to put up corrections alongside false statements it made about the coronavirus outbreak. This is the second order issued against STR under the Protection from Online Falsehood and Manipulation Act (Pofma) for bogus claims about the coronavirus crisis. STR had earlier falsely claimed that Singapore ran out of face masks. To date, the law has been used to deal with four cases of falsehoods related to the outbreak of the coronavirus disease, known as Covid-19. On Friday, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong instructed the Pofma Office to issue corrections against "multiple false statements" in a post that STR put up the day before. The post, which was about the 30,000 Chinese work pass holders who have not returned to Singapore, was shared more than 300 times. Among the erroneous claims were that Singapore had not been able to trace the source of infection for any of the infected Covid-19 cases here. The Government described the claims made by STR as "entirely false", and rebutted them point by point in a statement on its fact-checking website, Factually. On the source of infections, the statement said the Ministry of Health (MOH) had in fact established through epidemiological investigations and contact tracing that 51 out of the 58 people infected with the virus either had travelled to China or come from there, or had links to previously announced cases. Contact tracing is under way for the remaining seven locally transmitted cases, to see if there are similar links or travel history to China. The STR had also said the Government is "the only one" telling people not to wear masks. This is not true, as the MOH's advice is in line with the World Health Organisation's guidance, and similar to advice given by health authorities in countries such as the United States and Australia, said the government statement. MOH's advice is that there is no need for people who are well to wear a mask, but those with respiratory symptoms should don one to minimise the risk of infecting others. STR made two other false claims about the daily $100 allowance for workers on a leave of absence, and Manpower Minister Josephine Teo's remarks about Chinese workers. Rebutting the claims, the Government said Chinese work pass holders placed on a mandatory 14-day leave of absence "do not receive the $100 daily support". Though the Leave of Absence Support Programme covers all workers, regardless of nationality, it is employers that receive the support, it added. These employers must have workers who travelled to China on or before Jan 31 this year, and who were placed on leave of absence after returning to Singapore on or after Jan 31. The Government also made clear that Mrs Teo never said she was working hard to bring more Chinese workers back to Singapore. On the contrary, the Manpower Ministry (MOM) has put in measures to slow down the return of affected work pass holders, like requiring employers to get prior approval before their workers can return, said the statement. It has also rejected more applications than it has approved. The STR had also said seven countries have since banned travel to Singapore due to lack of confidence in the measures taken so far to curb the spread of the virus. But as of 8pm on Thursday, there have been no such bans by any countries, said the Government. The STR Facebook page is run by Singaporean Alex Tan, who has received three Pofma orders so far since the laws against misinformation kicked in last October. He has not complied with any of the orders, and said he is now an Australian citizen. Besides issuing a correction order to Mr Tan, the Pofma Office also issued a Targeted Correction Direction to Facebook on Friday, requiring the social media company to put up the corrections on the STR post. The office had done the same in previous Pofma cases involving STR. The Government also advised people to get the latest updates on the Covid-19 situation from official sources such as the MOH website and Gov.sg WhatsApp service, and to report any suspected falsehoods to [email protected].

Taxi uncle admits fault after accident, and karma was returned!
kobayashiGT posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
Taxi Driver Scratches Porsche & Admits Mistake, Porsche owner ends up only taking $1. A taxi got into a brush with a Porsche just yesterday, resulting in scratches on both cars. But read on, for this episode holds more than the usual car accident dispute, for this taxi driver was gracious enough to admit that he made a mistake! The taxi driver pleaded with Mr. Wu not to make a claim against him, explaining that "times [were] bad". Mr. Wu understood his concerns and knew that driving a taxi is now a high-risk job, in view of the Covid-19 outbreak. Porsche owner transferred money back to the taxi driver Not one to shirk his responsibilities, the taxi driver still transferred $200 to Mr Wu for the damages. Nonetheless, Mr. Wu told the taxi driver that he had found a cheaper place to do repairs and decided to give him some money back. Instead of transferring some of the money, Mr Wu gave almost all of it away, save for $1. Through their WhatsApp text messages, Mr Wu seemed to have done so as to show that the taxi driver had paid for the losses. After returning the bulk of the money, the conscientious Mr. Wu said that he would not make any further claims. Netizens on Facebook were quick to praise the actions of Mr. Wu! A whopping 271 comments were written on the post. And Mr. Wu, if you are reading this. Kudos to you! You have our full respect from the MCF team! Let's all show a little graciousness on the roads. -
This is very interesting. There were two incidents that convinced me how to vote in the next election, the way our president was elected and the fake news law. What is our government going to do if facebook decide against the correction? Are they going to hurt our economy by going hard against facebook? Singapore as a small country needs to be as open as possible. To me, the government can always publish their rebuttals but to force the other party to shut up is way too much. It reminds me of china... I remember their justification for the fake news law was that sometimes it is time sensitive to prevent news from going viral, people getting hurt. Is this instance really the right way to use the new law? It is just stupid trying to force a showdown with facebook over this states times review which I never heard off until our government try to shut it down. To me, these two incidents, president elections and fake news law, are the clearest incidents where I feel the good of the country is sacrificed for political needs. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/states-times-review-fake-news-pofma-facebook-correction-12136996

Last night an online auctioneer sold off a Nissan GTR. But many sharp-eyed bidders noticed that the "winner" of this bid seemed to have the same GTR since 2018. Coincidental? Source: All Singapore Stuff Facebook Fan Page. And some of the notable comments on their facebook fan page. Anyone watched the auction at facebook?

As title suggests, the way we do our retail shopping is changing. Brick and mortar stores are failing. New malls are sprouting out in neighborhoods and even high profile ones like Jewel or Funan. But go to the established malls and you see the truth behind the retail trend. Footfall in malls are falling and that's because of the shift in the way shoppers' shop. First it was the physical retail store, then e-commerce in the form of websites (blogshops etc), after that Carousell took over and almost everyone I knew sold something online be it brand new or used. Now? The latest trend is Facebook Live Auction. This isn't something which recently started though. Facebook Live Auction has been around for a few years now but only in very recent times did it catch on in Singapore. Prolific sellers like Misshopper Boutique (S Hook Jiejie) whom recently found fame in the unique way she pitched her items to her viewers and also for being 'entertaining'. Subjective. Personally the very first few live auction house I started watching was maybe SG BlackMarket (presumably the first live auction house in SG). They stream every few nights a week for 3 to 4 hours at one time. They hawk electronics items, anime collectibles, action figures (Marvel, DC), Fortune Cat (Maneki Neko), Daruma etc. And the main point is, their items DO NOT COME CHEAP. I kid you not. A $15 item can close off at $50 or even more. They regularly close off their items in the $80 to $150 range, and that's per item. They're not cheap but people bid. Why? I would put it down to their auctioneer Lennon. He's funny and sarcastic and there are viewers who tune in just to watch him and subsequently get hooked on bidding too. After months of watching I never got down to bidding anything though I did try once for a Doraemon plushie. Their videos have since been deleted except for one of Lennon's. Maybe they're no longer in trend? https://www.facebook.com/SGBlackMarketXXX/videos/395633114360593/ So what's trending now? Mainly electronic/household items selling at really "cheap" prices. New auction houses are popping out almost everyday. I bought a few aroma diffuser, humidifier for really bargain prices. $10 Elehot Aroma Diffuser $10 Asakuki Essential Oil Diffuser $15 Aennon Cool Mist Humidifer $17 Riwbox Wireless Bluetooth Headphones Other popular items people regularly bid for: Sound bar especially brands like Taotronics Smart Plugs Mini Projectors Smart Weighing Scale Smart Watch IP Camera Wireless Earbuds Gaming mouse Gaming keyboard Wireless Doorbell Car Jump Starter In Car Camera Some other Auction Houses https://www.facebook.com/Lelong.Auction.Sg/videos/2144115009049043/ https://www.facebook.com/TheLadyboyAuction/videos/324970791741109/ Fresh Seafood Bidding??? https://www.facebook.com/firstmarketonlinebidding/videos/474163999817071/ It's crazy how we do so much research at times to find out about a product we're getting from a retail shop yet willingly part with our money to purchase Auction Houses products from brands we haven't even heard of, no idea the full specs/features of the product, doesn't come with warranty etc. And what's the catch though? A lot of these items are actually returned goods. Some may not come in boxes, some boxes may be damaged, some may be missing a controller inside etc. Hence the cheaper price you may be getting it for. Anyone of you here have bid for anything on Facebook before? What's worth it and what's not?

Do you know that MCF has a group page on Facebook for you to share/post your USED items? Find us at MCF Marketplace on Facebook! Please note that it is only for the posting and sharing of Used Car Parts & Accessories. I would also recommend you to post your used items first on MCF Marketplace, then use the 'share function' to reach out to more car owners on Facebook (who could be MCF Users and non MCF users). This makes it easier to consolidate and track all your ads + share out to other groups as well! For the sharing function, if it's not working for you, please check your 'pop-up ads' blocker. Thank you!

https://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/tech-news-whatsapp-said-be-working-introduce-ads-ios-app Bad news.. If you are using WhatsApp on the iPhone, ads could be coming your way soon! WABetaInfo, who has a solid track record of providing accurate information about upcoming WhatsApp features, claims that Facebook is already working on introducing ads to the iOS version of the instant messaging app. Ads will reportedly appear within the WhatsApp Status where you typically share photo and video montages to your contacts. It is not known how these ads will be targeted. Facebook could associate phone numbers with user profiles on the social networking site. The ad feature is said to be still in testing phase and may take a while before it is implemented. As and when that happens, users may flock to other instant messaging apps such as Telegram.

The 11-storey data centre is 170,000 sqm and will “support hundreds of jobs”, says the social media giant. Social media giant Facebook on Thursday (Sep 6) announced it will pour in more than S$1.4 billion to construct its first data centre in Asia in Singapore. The new facility, located at Tanjong Kling (formerly known as Data Centre Park) in the west of Singapore, will span 170,000 sq m and will “support hundreds of jobs”, the company said in its press release, adding it will form part of its growing presence in Singapore and across the region.
