  1. Does anyone find that their direct injection engine's performance getting worse over time due to carbon build up My mileage is quite high now >120k and engine pickup getting worse. Many cars are using direct injection so they will suffer from the same problems. For my next car, I would prefer to get one with a dual injection engine. From the info I gathered, it seems that VW's EA888 and Toyota's D-4S are two such engines. Any experience to share?
  2. Hi car owners with direct injection engine (GDI/Gasoline Direct Injection), would like to understand more about cleaning of carbon deposits on the intake valves. Anyone has experience to share about such cleaning service - chemical or mechanical - is available locally? Or has anyone tried to diy? More info on the need for cleaning can be found here: http://www.aa1car.com/library/intake_valve_deposits_gdi_engines.htm
  3. Renault has unveiled their new 1.6-litre F1 engine at the 2013 Paris Air Show. The direct-injected V6 unit is equipped with an exhaust-driven turbocharger, two motor generator units (MGUs) with an Energy Recovery System (ERS). For reader's information, come 2014, the current 2.4-litre V8 engines which rev to a maximum of 18,000rpm will be replaced by 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged power units revving to a maximum of 15,000rpm. The MGUs are capable of producing 160bhp while the turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 churns out approximately 600bhp, bringing the combined output to roughly 760bhp. Although the output is higher than the current V8, fuel efficiency is claimed to improve vastly by about 35 percent. On the new engine, Renault's Deputy Managing Director (Technical), Rob White, explained, "The engines remain high-revving, ultra-high output competition engines. Fundamentally the engine noise will still be loud. The engine noise is just a turbocharged noise rather than a normally-aspirated noise: you can just hear the turbo when the driver lifts off the throttle and the engine speed drops. The sound of the new generation power units is just different (from the preceding V8)". Renault has released a video alongside with the launch and interestingly, it seemed like a video promoting Adidas products at certain points.
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm90__azVSo Mercedes has revealed the 2014 S 63 AMG ahead of its public debut in September's Frankfurt Motor Show. The high performance Mercedes flagship sedan is powered by a direct-injected, twin-turbocharged 5.5-litres V8 engine which delivers 585 bhp and 900Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT sports transmission with three selections, namely "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual). Both the SWB and LWB S 63 AMG take only 4.4 seconds to reach 100km/h from standstill. The AWD 4MATIC model even manages to shave off 0.4 seconds from the century sprint performance. All models have an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. The new S 63 AMG is up to 100kg lighter than its predecessor due to several weight saving measures. These include the usage of light alloy rims, aluminum construction for the roof and front panels, usage of carbon fibre for the spare wheel recess, among others. The lithium-ion battery itself already contributed to 20kg of weight savings. The S 63 AMG is equipped with Mercedes' AIRMATIC suspension which offers continuous damping adjustment. This enables the performance sedan to adjust better to driving styles and road conditions. The suspension offers two settings, namely "Comfort" and "Sport". A torque vectoring system helps to improve handling. High performance AMG ceramic composite brake, which weighs 20 percent lighter than stock ones, is on the option list.
  5. After all the speculations, here's the first set of official photos of the 2014 Mazda3 sedan. Bearing the same front fascia as the hatchback, the Mazda3 has a short boot with an elongated bonnet, giving the new sedan an imposing stance. From certain angle, the latest Mazda3 bears a resemblance to the second generation Lexus IS, which is not a bad thing. In my opinion, the Mazda3 and Kia K3 are currently the best-looking compact sedans from Asia. The Mazda3 sedan will be offered with the same engine and gearbox line up as the recently-launched hatchback version. This means a range of SKYACTIV-G petrol with capacities of 1.5-litre, 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre and a 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D diesel. Depending on the model, transmission options include a six-speed automatic and a six-speed manual gearbox. According to a report by The Straits Times, the new Mazda3 will arrive in Singapore in the first half of 2014. In the meantime, we can feast our eyes on the gallery below.
  6. Soon after the official release of the 2014 Mazda3 hatchback, a photo of the sedan form has been leaked. The photo shows the D-pillar of the new Mazda3 sedan. While the authenticity of the photo cannot be confirmed, it looked quite realistic. The taillight design is similar to the hatchback's although slight modifications can be observed upon close inspection. The boot lid spoiler adds a sporty touch to the compact sedan. Engine choices should be identical to those of the hatchback. They include a 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-G with 99bhp; a 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G with outputs of 118bhp/155bhp/162bhp depending on market; a 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G with 184bhp and a 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D with 148bhp. The lightweight and highly rigid SKYACTIV-BODY increases rigidity by approximately 30 percent as compared to the outgoing model, with a dual brace structure that suppresses body deformation when cornering. The aerodynamic body achieves a drag coefficient of 0.275 for the hatchback (below) and 0.255 for the sedan. The Hiroshima-based carmaker conveyed that the MazdaSpeed3 is under development and the sedan's debut is not far away.
  7. For BMW fans, the highly anticipated BMW 4 Series Coupe has been revealed. The 4 Series is the successor to the current 3 Series Coupe. In the U.S.A, the 4 Series is available with two variants, namely the 428i and the 435i. Both models have an all wheel drive setup. The 420d will be available only in Europe at the moment. The 428i is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four that churns out 245bhp. With an eight-speed automatic transmission, it takes 5.8 seconds to go from 0 to 100km/h before hitting an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h. The higher-spec 435i comes with the 306bhp N55 3.0-litre engine and reaches 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds with the eight-speed automatic gearbox. The 420d will be fitted with the 184bhp four-cylinder diesel and is paired exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. The century sprint takes around 7.3 to 7.5 seconds. BMW offers three different styling packages which includes a sport package with gloss black accents, sport-tuned suspension and 18-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels; a luxury package with chrome accents, leather seats and high-gloss wood trim; an M Sport package with an aerodynamic body kit, 18-inch M-style wheels, sports suspension, high-performance brakes and M-spec interior. Before we get to see the handsome coupe live in Singapore, here are a couple of photos for your viewing pleasure.
  8. The Nissan Micra (known as the March in Singapore) has undergone a nip and tuck procedure for 2013. The most prominent update is done on the front fascia, which receives a revised headlamp, bumper, plus a grille inspired by the Juke SUV. It certainly looks more rugged now than before. The taillight combination is revised as well. The top-of-the range model gets 16-inch alloy wheels, climate control, park assist and a 5.8-inch infotainment screen among other goodies. USB and MP3 player connectivity is standard across all variants. Under the hood, the 2013 Micra uses the same 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine with 79bhp. However, a more power 1.2-litre DIG-S with 97bhp is available too. This is the same engine found in the Note. The more powerful motor actually produces less CO2 than its lesser brethren (95g/km vs 115g/km). Transmission options include a standard five-speed manual or CVT automatic. Class competitors for the new Nissan Micra include the Mitsubishi Mirage, Ford Fiesta and Honda Jazz.
  9. Opel has removed the wraps off the 2013 Insignia facelift. The revised German mid-sized sedan will be making its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Exterior updates include revised headlamps, front and rear bumpers, taillight combination and front grille. On the inside, the center console is now less cluttered with buttons, which Opel claims improved intuitive operation of common functions such as air conditioning and infotainment. The instrument cluster also has a new set of dials. A new flat-bottomed steering wheel completes the interior update. For the petrol power trains, the 2013 Insignia gets a choice of 1.6-litre SIDI engine with 170bhp or a 2.0-litre version with 250bhp. The 2.0 SIDI engine produces 30bhp more than the existing 2.0-litre turbocharged unit. Diesel options include a 2.0-litre CDTI with either 120bhp/320Nm or 140bhp/370Nm. A 2.0-litre BiTurbo CDTI with 195bhp and 400Nm of torque is also available. Depending on the engine choice, the Insignia is offered with a choice of six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission.
  10. Ford launched the 2014 Mondeo (Fusion) at the Shanghai Motor Show in April with a brand new 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine. The 1.5-litre engine benefits from the signature EcoBoost turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing. Now, Ford has officially announced the output of the new power plant. It produces 178bhp with an accompanying 240Nm of torque available between 1500rpm to 4500rpm. Fuel consumption figures are not available at the moment. Power is similar to the existing 1.6-litre EcoBoost but torque figure is 9Nm lower. The 1.6-litre EcoBoost in the six-speed automatic Fusion will be replaced by the new 1.5-litre EcoBoost. However, the six-speed manual version will still continue to use the existing 1.6-litre engine. But in time to come, it is likely that the 1.6-litre will be phased out eventually as it does not make sense to produce two engines that are so similar in specifications concurrently. The new 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine will be built at Ford's plant in Craiova, Romania.
  11. Ford's 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has won the "International Engine of the Year" award for the second consecutive year. Not only that, the turbocharged, direct-injection three-cylinder engine achieved the highest score in the 15 year history of the awards. "With a technology as mature as the internal combustion engine, it's very rare to achieve a true breakthrough, but that is exactly what the team accomplished with this engine," said Joe Bakaj, Ford Vice President, Global Powertrain. "You have to drive it to believe a small three-cylinder engine can deliver such performance and fuel economy." A panel of 87 automotive journalists from 35 countries around the world judged the awardees based on drivability, performance, economy, refinement and the successful application of advanced engine technology. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is currently offered in cars such as Fiesta, B-MAX and the Focus. In the near future, it will also power larger cars including the new Ford Mondeo. The rest of the award winners are as follows: New Engine Ford three-cylinder turbo (Focus) Green Engine General Motors 1.4-litre range extender (Chevrolet Volt, Opel Ampera) Performance Engine Ferrari 4.5-litre V8 (458 Italia) Sub 1.0-litre Ford three-cylinder turbo (Focus) 1.0-litre to 1.4-litre Volkswagen 1.4-litre TSI Twincharger 1.4-litre to 1.8-litre BMW-PSA 1.6-litre turbo gasoline 1.8-litre to 2.0-litre BMW 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder gasoline 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre Audi 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo (TT RS, RS3 Sportback) 2.5-litre to 3.0-litre BMW 3.0-litre bi-turbo six-cylinder (1 Series M Coupe, 335is, Z4 35is) 3.0-litre to 4.0-litre BMW M 4.0-litre V8 (BMW M3) Above 4.0-litre Ferrari 4.5-litre V8 (458 Italia)
  12. A recent visit to Honda Singapore's Facebook page revealed the impending arrival of the all new Honda Accord. The ninth generation Accord already went on sale in the North American market back in September 2012. Since the past two generations of the Singapore-bound Accord hail from Thailand, the factory source of the latest version is almost a forgone conclusion. The specifications of the Thailand Accord will tell a lot about the model that we will be getting. The new Thailand Accord is available with a 155bhp 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine or a 174bhp 2.4-litre i-VTEC Earth Dreams Technology. The 2.4-litre unit is a brand new engine from Honda that employs VTC (Variable Timing Control) and direct injection technology with extensive friction reduction measures. This is in addition to the usual DOHC and VTEC technologies. Both engines are mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. This may sound a tad disappointing as class competitors such as the Kia Optima and Mazda 6 have already adopted a six-speed setup. Measuring 4,870mm by 1,850mm by 1,465mm (L x W x H), the new Accord is shorter but wider and sits lower than the outgoing model. The front double wishbone suspension has been replaced with a MacPherson strut design while the rear retains a multi-link setup. It is the first Accord to use a strut suspension since the second generation. From a safety aspect, the new Accord is available with Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS) that alerts the driver of an imminent front end collision and applies the brake automatically. The Honda Lane Watch Blind Spot Display provides an enhanced view of the passenger-side roadway. The 2.4-litre variant comes equipped with six airbags while the 2.0-litre makes do with four. Vehicle Stability Assist is standard across all models. The complete specifications of the new Thailand Accord can be found below.
  13. MG is developing a range of turbocharged, direct-injected gasoline engines which will be launched in China at the end of 2014, and arriving in Europe a year later. These engines include 1.4-litre and 1.5-litre force-fed units as well as a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit that claims to rival Ford's Ecoboost unit. Given that Ford's 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has been named the 2012 'International Engine of the Year' - MG has got some very serious work to do. "Our benchmark for the 1.0-litre has to be the Ford Ecoboost engine," commented MG's Head of Powertrain, Paul McNamara. "Ford has got the technology to market first and changed perceptions. Our goal is to be competitive with their figures and attain the best real-world results possible," McNamara added. The larger 1.4-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged engines will be available in the MG3, MG5, MG6 and a production version of the CS Concept (above) displayed at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. In addition to new power plants, MG is also working on two dual-clutch transmissions, namely a wet version that can handle 359Nm of torque and a dry version that can take up to 223Nm of torque. The wet dual-clutch transmission will go on sale in China this year while the dry one will likely go into production in 2015. The MG Car Company Limited was a former British sports car manufacturer founded in the 1920s. On 22nd July 2005, the Nanjing Automobile Group purchased the rights to the MG brand and the assets of the MG Rover Group, creating a new company called MG Motor.
  14. Ford has announced that it will introduce a new 1.5-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost engine for the China-bound Mondeo, which will debut at the upcoming Shanghai Motor Show. The engine will also propel the Fusion (a rebadged Mondeo) in North America and subsequently the Europe market Mondeo. The announcement may come as a surprise as it is contrary to earlier reports which expect the 2013 Mondeo to be equipped with Ford
  15. Toyota is celebrating its participation in the VLN Endurance Championship in Europe with the launch of an 86-units-only GT86 Cup Edition model. The coupe is designed to mimic the look of the GT 86 CS-V3 race car built by German tuning specialist, TMG. The GT 86 Cup Edition wears 18-inch Ultraleggera wheels from OZ Racing with 225/40 Pirelli P Zero Nero GT tyres. Available only in Germany, the Cup Edition model will cost an extra 2,860 Euros (S$4,640) and will be offered in Dynamic White Pearl, Furious Black Mica and Racing Red. Interior upgrades include a sports steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara material, Cup Edition label on the dash and a unique numbered plaque made of brushed aluminum. There's also red stitching all around the cabin. The powertrain has been left untouched, which means a direct-injected, 2.0-litre Boxer engine with 200bhp and 206Nm of torque.
  16. There is a new "3" sedan in town. Although it may sound like a car that hails from Germany, it is actually the first small family saloon from Chinese car manufacturer, Qoros. The Qoros 3 will be making its world premiere in March's Geneva Motor Show. Qoros was founded as a part of a joint venture between Chery Automobile and global holding company, Israel Corporation. At launch, the 4.59m long saloon will be available with two 1.6-litres petrol engines - a naturally-aspirated unit and a turbocharged version. They produce 126bhp and 156bhp respectively. Both engines will come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard and an optional dual-clutch automatic transmission. The lower-powered engine propels the car from 0 to 100km/h in 11.0 seconds while the turbocharged lump does the same job in 9.0 seconds. Two turbocharged, direct-injected engines with 1.2-litres and 1.6-litres capacity are under development. The Qoros 3 sedan will be joined by the Qoros 3 Estate Concept at the Geneva Motor Show. The Qoros 3 sedan will go on sale in the second half of the year.
  17. [extract] Alfa Romeo has released the first set of official photos of the 4C coupe. The Italian beauty is set to make its world premiere in March
  18. Fancy the power of the Veloster Turbo but wished that it comes with a 4th door? Good news! The all-new Kia Forte 5-door may fit the bill. The latest Korean hatchback was launched at the recent 2013 Chicago Auto Show. Like the four-door sedan, the five-door Forte looks sportier and more sophisticated that its predecessor. It has a slimmer grille than the sedan and comes with a more aggressive-looking front bumper that house a larger air intake. For the new Forte hatchback, beauty is more than skin deep. The big news is that the 1.6-litre T-GDI will be offered as one of the engine choice. The turbocharged lump churns out 201bhp with 264Nm of torque between 1,750 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. This most powerful Forte to date wears 18-inch alloys and has a sports-tuned MacPherson suspension at the front with multi-link setup at the rear. "The combination of a useful hatchback for carrying cargo and the sportiness of the turbocharged SX trim make the all-new Forte 5-door a dual threat in the segment," said Kia Motors America executive vice president of marketing, Michael Sprague. Kia
  19. Toyota partnered with motorsports specialist GRMN and come up with a turbocharged version of the Vitz (Yaris) at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon. Although the display is a one-off event, Toyota is said to be shifting its focus to downsized, turbocharged gasoline direct-injected (T-GDI) engines. Although Toyota is the leading producer of hybrid engines, the market is small compared to the number of T-GDI motors out there. Take a look at Saturday's edition of The Straits Times and I'm sure you will find acronyms such as "TFSI", "TSI", "EcoBoost" and "TwinPower Turbo". Although Toyota has used direct-injection and turbocharging technologies in certain models, other carmakers like Volkswagen have implemented them in their entire engine lineup. A small Japanese business daily paper reported that T-GDI engines could appear in domestic models such as the Crown as soon as 2013, and they could be marketed to China and Europe as well. Automotive analyst of Deutsche Bank Kurt Sanger told The Detroit Bureau, "We expect it (America) to be a potential market for such technology to further increase the competitiveness of (Toyota) products." Other sources believe that the next-generation Toyota Corolla is likely the first all-new model to receive a T-GDI engine.
  20. For those of you who have been longing for a convertible version of the Toyota 86 coupe, your wait might be over soon. Toyota will be presenting the FT-86 Open Concept in March's Geneva Motor Show. For now, the Japanese carmaker has showed an official sketch of the concept which reveals a 2+2 seating layout. On the concept, Toyota says that it previews a possible future development of the award-winning GT86 sports coupe and its goal is to gauge the public's reaction to the idea of an open-top GT86. Toyota adds that the prototype version of the FT-86 is already undergoing testing. If public reaction is positive, a production model could be available in roughly a year
  21. Only until recently, the Kia Optima 2.0-litre Turbo was only reserved for the North American market as it was solely available in left-hand drive mode. However, Kia has managed to overcome the engineering impediments to building a right-hand drive version which is starting to roll off the production line. The Optima turbo features direct injection and is rated at 274bhp with 365Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. The top-of-the range Optima completes the century sprint in a brisk 6.8 seconds. This means that the Optima turbo reaches the 100km/h mark faster than a BMW 520i. The addition of the Optima turbo will strengthen Kia's image in Singapore if it is introduced here. The Korean sedan will finally have the 'go' to match the 'show' and put it in a better position to compete with the Europeans. Here's a short video review of the Kia Optima Turbo:
  22. Hyundai has unveiled the HCD-14 Genesis concept at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show. The four-door coupe concept is a preview of the next generation Genesis and carries design elements for future Hyundai products. The concept is powered by the Korean carmaker's 5.0-litre direct-injected 'Tau' V8 with dual continuously variable valve timing. The engine is linked an 8-speed automatic transmission which delivers power to the rear wheels. "We instilled HCD-14 Genesis with a premium-sport four-door coupe road presence", said Christopher Chapman, Hyundai's Chief Designer in America. "Its sleek and lightweight silhouette does not punish the wind but used fluidic precision with dramatic surfacing that conveys natural restraint." The front end is dominated by a large grille with 4 horizontal metal bars, which can appear overbearing. The concept has a tapered boot like the Audi A7. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the HCD-14 is its rear-hinged rear doors, or commonly known as "suicide doors". Like most four-door coupes in the market, the HCD-14 strictly sits four.
  23. Tan Chong Motor will be bringing in the Note mini MPV to join Nissan's current lineup in Singapore. In its second generation, the Note was unveiled on 16 July 2012 and is the production version of the Invitation concept that was presented at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Measuring 4100mm (L) x 1,695mm (B) x 1,525mm (H), the car is larger than the Nissan March but slightly smaller than the Freed, a parallel-imported mini MPV from Honda. Perhaps, the interesting part about the note lies underneath the bonnet. It is powered by Nissan's new supercharged 1.2-litre DR12DDR engine. The forced-fed lump features technologies such as direct injection and Continuous Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS). Power is transmitted to the front wheel via a CVT transmission. Fuel economy is rated at 25.2km/L based on the JC08 cycle, a Japanese fuel consumption test. If you are looking for a mini MPV or hatchback, do take note of the latest offering from Nissan.

    Ford

Perhaps to prove that their 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine is truly a compact unit, Ford chose to transport it in a hand-carry cabin luggage on its way from Detroit to the Los Angeles Airport. The winner of the 2012 'International Engine of The Year' award claims to occupy only the footprint of an A4 size paper when it was launched. From the photo, only the empty engine block is carried and hence it should not be too heavy. Fortunately, the car engine passed the transportation security screening without any problem. The engine is on its way for the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. Ford is showing the engine to the US market in preparation for its launch in the 2014 model year Ford Fiesta. The tiny turbocharged 1.0-litre engine is the epitome of downsizing, churning out 125bhp with 200Nm of torque on overboost. In addition to the face-lifted Fiesta, the engine is also powering the Focus hatchback and the 4.8m all-new Ford Mondeo. Ford proves that great things do come in small packages!
