The Philippines immigration bureau last week detained about 1,200 Chinese people working in call center-like facilities suspected of running online gambling operations out of a former U.S. air base, Clark Field. The detentions marked the government's biggest such round-up of Chinese nationals in the country, many thought to be working there illegally. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said China had requested that the Philippines "appropriately make arrangements" for those who had been detained and quickly release individuals who have "legal identification". "At the same time, China expresses concern over the large number of Chinese citizens detained by the Philippines," Geng told reporters at a regular press briefing, adding that China always reminds its citizens who travel abroad to abide by local laws. It is unclear if the Chinese nationals were being held for gambling offences or for visa and immigration violations, but about 900 were brought to the immigration detention center in Manila, according to a Philippine police report. Online gambling is not illegal in the Philippines, but it is subject to permitting and zoning regulations. China has expressed support for the Philippines' other law enforcement efforts, including President Rodrigo Duterte's anti-narcotics campaign, which has sparked criticism from Western countries over fears of extrajudicial killings. In contrast with the previous Philippine government's adversarial relationship with Beijing, Duterte has made efforts to improve ties with China, which have been plagued by territorial disputes in the South China Sea. Prior to leaving for an Asia-Pacific summit in Lima this month, Duterte said if Russia and China decided to create a "new order" in the world, he would be the first to join.

Executive Assistant...... civillian or uniform service ???? from CNA: Defence executive assistant dies after collapsing at SAF detention barracks SINGAPORE: A defence executive assistant with the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), who was detained at the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) detention barracks to assist in investigations, has died. MINDEF said 54-year-old Sivaperumal Tanggayelu collapsed while taking a shower at about 6.50pm last Friday. It said the duty medic immediately started resuscitation efforts on Mr Sivaperumal, who was unconscious and without a pulse. At 7.09pm, Mr Sivaperumal was moved to Tengah Air Base Medical Centre, where an SAF doctor assessed that he had suffered a cardiac arrest. Advanced life support intervention was initiated and he was moved to the National University Hospital (NUH) Emergency Department at 7.44pm. MINDEF said resuscitation efforts continued en route to the hospital. At NUH, Mr Sivaperumal was resuscitated at 8.15pm, but remained in a critical condition. He died on Monday at about 8.50pm at NUH. MINDEF said before his detention, Mr Sivaperumal had been assessed to be medically fit for remand. Since starting his detention on 15 October, Mr Sivaperumal had not reported sick or complained that he was feeling unwell. MINDEF said he had also been excused from physical activities. It added that the SAF is providing assistance to the family and is investigating the incident. - CNA/xq

Prime Minister Najib Razak has moved to appease conservative factions in the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO) in recent weeks, signalling that the weak election victory has blunted his ability to push liberal reforms. Teo Nie Ching, an opposition member of parliament, said the new proposal appeared to be a "fundamental breach of human rights". "It seems we are going back to the time of the ISA (Internal Security Act) even though it is called prevention of crime," she told Reuters. The ISA, which allowed for indefinite detention, was among several tough security laws repealed by Najib in 2011. Under the amendment, a Prevention of Crime Board made up of three members and headed by a judge will be able to issue a detention order for two years, which could be renewed for two years indefinitely, according to a copy of the bill seen by Reuters. Hi Guys, Anyone has gotten charged for DB for missing IPPT and RT here? seems like becoming a norm now for all NSMEN who misses for more than 3 times. charge range from 3 days tio 7 days. I got it back in April. one day before voting day... Dam... lost my chance to vote... i agree i am in the wrong, but then charge for 4 days to me seem pretty harsh. and my friend recently got charged for 4 days as well.

Superintendent of detention centre sacked over Mas Selamat's escape By Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 26 May 2008 1437 hrs SINGAPORE: The superintendent of the Whitley Road Detention Centre has been sacked over security lapses that led to the escape of Jemaah Islamiyah detainee Mas Selamat Kastari. His deputy has also been demoted in rank, with a corresponding pay cut. The two were the most senior officers in charge of the ground management of the detention centre, and were among six Internal Security Department (ISD) officers charged over the escape. Two other Gurkha officers were also charged and have been demoted after pleading guilty. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng disclosed the moves when he updated Parliament on the disciplinary action taken after Mas Selamat's escape. Mas Selamat had escaped from a ventilation window in a toilet at the detention centre on February 27 and remains at large. No grilles were mounted on the window. Mr Wong said the superintendent should have instructed the renovation contractor to install grilles on the ventilation window. Instead, the superintendent asked for the handle of the window to be sawn off in the mistaken belief that it was a sufficient security measure. This, Mr Wong said, was a serious error. The superintendent and his deputy have also been held accountable for the lack of supervision over the subordinate officers implicated in the escape. Mr Wong said the ISD's command director, whom the superintendent reported to, has also been relieved of his duties on April 24. Although the command director was neither directly nor indirectly linked to the lapses of specific officers down the line, and he was not at fault over the lapses, Mr Wong said he was formally the apex of the supervisory and management chain of command overseeing the detention centre. - CNA/ac So higher management on top of ISD's command director should be sack as well right....but why are those ppl still sitting in the parliament?

Are we expecting more road blocks over the next few days? ========================================== THE leader of the Singapore Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) network, Mas Selamat Kastari, escaped from the Whitley Road detention centre at about 4.05 pm on Wednesday, said the Ministry of Home Affairs in a statement. A massive manhunt is underway to track down the escaped detainee, who walks with a limp. 'He is not known to be armed. Extensive police resources have been deployed to track him down,' said the ministry statement. The public is asked to contact the police at 999 if they know of his whereabouts.
