Hi gents, Looking to seek opinions and advice whether to change cars or not. Reason being is to attain lower running cost and see if i'm able to recoup some loss. Currently driving a Dec 07 registered CRV 2.4 from KM. COE was about 17K then? Going to hit 100K mileage soon. No issues thus far, fully serviced on time at KM. Outstanding loan left about 50+K. Thinking of switching to a older used car of lower capacity etc. Currently looking at something like a 2.0XT used forester; example given below. SG Carmart Subaru Forester 2.0XT Would like to seek your opinions and advice if it's wise to do so or to just stick with my CRV till the COE expires. Thanks in advance for your help!

I guess the title is already self explainatory. This is being brought up in light of the news that the Ministry of manpower particularly when the Minister of State Tan Chuan-Jin evoke a law and took to task a company for their discriminatory nature of the company's advertisement in recuritment. Let's face it. If any company wants to employ certain type of ppl which they so seek, they could still do it at ANY point of the recuritment. The Bosses could seive thru those they want based on any discriminatory standards they so apply and only employ those they want. Evoking laws of such is totally a moot point. It does not even scrap the surface of the problem and neithier will it address the real issue as to why some or should I say, many companies tend to hire certain type of ppl. This could be race, employment status etc or even how pretty a candidate is! Maybe Mr Tan need to take a self reflection as to why companies in Sinkland became such. Could it becos of the cheap abundance of FTs particularly even those they liberally gave scholarships to , the strong currency, the liberal employment laws where the Boss is KING or locals cost more to employ and job hop or the very working atitude associated with Sinkie etc etc! Let me make an analogy. Know the famous Chinese saying of ..'hanging Goat's head but selling dog meat Well, the companies could jolly well be asking for goats from now in their recuritment ads but actually want dogs as they could be cheaper and more obedient ( they could even catch those that are strays )or dogs work harder and are cheaper to feed, less petty or even more productive and for every Boss , the whole idea about any business is to make more money particularly for himself! Even by evoking such laws, the companies who still perfer certain employees will jolly well execute their selection critieria at the point where they can still pick and choose whoever they want. Sinkland has got a habit that if they don't use methods such as punishing some scrapgoats as example or put up education campaigns again and again, the MIWs don't feel that have gotten the point thru. Maybe the answer has always rest within their own doing and their failure to even recognise this let alone own up to it. So our Ministar Tan is really doing things that are self defeating. Maybe he should first examine the very policies that could make companies want to hire more based on the very merit of the candidates they seek and to undo some policies that seem to hinder or encourage companies NOT to do so. Since I'm not paid a million bucks or more a year I'll leave the thinking and better solutions for Mr Tan to come up with...that is if he is worth his salt and pay check!

It is a sad story, so sad that it could almost be a Taiwanese soap opera. Unfortunately, it is not fiction, but a true story. (And here is the SPH newspaper report to prove it). Once upon a time, there was a woman who lived in Aljunied (we don't know her real name, so let's just call her Julie). She was 53 years old, and she had a 17-year-old son (again we don't know his real name - so we'll just call him Ah Teck). Julie was poorly educated. She had only studied up to Primary 6. She worked as a part-time cleaner, earning $400 a month to support herself and Ah Teck. Meanwhile, Ah Teck had low IQ and was attending a special school for mentally handicapped kids. He also had thalassemia, a blood disorder. Ah Teck's father had run away several years ago and could no longer be found. So there was absolutely no financial help from him. One day in January 2009, Julie was at work. She was standing on a chair to clean a fan. Suddenly, she slipped and fell. She broke her wrist. Thereafter Julie lost her job, for she could no longer perform her cleaning duties. The money soon ran out and they could not pay their HDB mortgage instalments. So Julie and Ah Teck were about to lose their home - the HDB was taking action to repossess it. The HDB agreed to rent her another flat. But Julie did not even have $138 to pay for the rental deposit. So Julie and Ah Teck decided to go to see their MP in Aljunied. They hoped that the MP would sign an appeal letter for them, to waive the $138 rental deposit. They went to the town council and had a chance to meet Aljunied MP Cynthia Phua (yes, the same Cynthia Phua now running for Aljunied again, together with George Yeo). What went on in the office, we do not know for sure. Cynthia later claimed that the conversation was cordial and went well. Her fellow PAP MP Lim Hwee Hua even claimed that Cynthia behaved in a manner that was "very helpful" and "very motherly". But we hear a different side of the story from Julie, and it goes like this: ".....shortly after they had entered the office, Madam Phua asked her son a series of questions: 'She asked him, 'Who are you? What are you doing? Why aren't you working?' .... The mother said she wanted to explain her son's condition, but wasn't given a chance. 'I felt like we were being scolded,' she said. Whatever Cynthia Phua had actually said, we know that Ah Teck must have felt very humiliated and insulted. Perhaps it was not merely the words, but the tone, the demeanour, the body language. Whatever the case may be, we know how Ah Teck must have felt. That's because right after he walked out of Cynthia's office, he lost his temper in a big way. Ah Teck picked up a foldable chair, and slammed it twice on a door. There was a small commotion, other people quickly restrained the boy and calmed him down. And then Julie went home, taking her mentally-handicapped son with her. The story might have ended there, but it did not. Cynthia made a police report. Later that night, the police arrived and arrested Ah Teck. Criminal charges were brought against him. Two days later, Julie went to see the MP again, clutching a handwritten letter of apology from her son. We are told that in this letter, Ah Teck wrote the following words: "'Please fodgive me for what I dad I am sinelely truely I'm sorry". (Note that Ah Teck has low IQ - that would be why his writing skills are so poor). But there was no forgiveness. There was no kindness. PAP MP Lim Hwee Hua rejected the apology and refused to ask the police to withdraw the case. Hwee Hua further claimed that Ah Teck's chair "could have killed somebody". (Personally, I think that the only thing you can kill by hitting a door with a chair is the door. Or the chair). Charges were pressed and the hapless Ah Teck was required to appear in court on a certain date - 12th May 2009. What happened next is not publicly known. I have surfed and googled, but the media does not seem to have followed up on the story and I cannot get any more information. This is probably because the boy was underage. In Singapore, juvenile court proceedings are generally shielded from the public eye and reporters are kept out of the courtroom. So the story ends here - because we really don't know what happened next. What I hope is that Ah Teck did not get some criminal conviction that would stain his record, and make his already-bleak future even more difficult. I also hope that both Julie and Ah Teck had the good fortune to meet a judge who could understand their hardship and empathise with their daily struggles for money and a roof over their heads. And I hope that the judge treated Ah Teck with more kindness and compassion, than the Aljunied PAP MPs had done. Since the General Elections are here again, it is also my hope that you will take a few moments to reflect on the above incident. Especially if you are in the Aljunied GRC, please vote wisely .... for MPs who are kind and compassionate, and who genuinely want to help their residents.

Leaders of Singapore's opposition parties have rejected Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's recent comments that a two-party system won't work in Singapore because of a dearth of talent. Referring to the speech PM Lee made at the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Kent Ridge Ministerial Forum held on Tuesday, the Singapore Democratic Party said in a statement, "Singaporeans will decide the political system, not the PAP." "There's no need for the PAP to do anything with itself but to ensure a free and fair election system and a free and pluralistic media," it added. SDP was referring to PM Lee's revelation that the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) had "seriously considered" splitting into two but eventually decided against it. Several opposition leaders said that it's more important to build a healthier political system and work towards a different future model of governance rather than be solely dependent on a one-party system. At the forum, PM Lee said that he is putting together the "next A-Team for Singapore" and told his young audience that now was not the best time to buy "insurance" and vote for the opposition. Best time for 'insurance'? Secretary-general of the Workers' Party (WP) Low Thia Khiang, however, told Today newspaper, "I think buying insurance is the right thing to do. I decide to try out the oil since there is so much ho ha about it. Bought 2 cans from MX trading. Drain out my 1500KM old Amsoil 20W50 and pour it in. Wow!! Smooth man!! Awesome!! 1 week later....... Duh, no difference leh. The feeling is just what I get from brand new oil earlier on. Try revving to 5-6K RPM....... Can't tell any difference compared to Amsoil as well. FC slightly better than Amsoil. Just slightly better. So, I will just stick back with Amsoil during my next oil change. Maybe it will work if I track often or rev till redline all the time. But for normal driving I don't see the point. My $$$ just went down the drain..... :(

In 3-5 months from now I will be assigned in neighboring Asian country for 2 years. I am looking for Isuzu Dmax and Toyota Hilux for personal use and leisures. 4x4 is a must and good suspension and of course reliable. I don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere helpless ;)

May 27, 2008 No need for mandatory rest day for maids: Minister THE Government has no plans to introduce a mandatory rest day for foreign maids - at this point, said acting Minister for Manpower Gan Kim Yong. In a written response to a question from Nominated MP Siew Kum Hong in Parliament on Monday, Mr Gan said most maids are happy working in Singapore and the reported cases of abuse have remained low. 'There is therefore no need at this point for MOM to legislate a mandatory rest day,' he said, reiterating that the ministry is committed to safeguarding the well-being of foreign domestic workers (FDWs) in Singapore. Mr Gan said as part of the Work Permit conditions, employers are responsible for the well-being of their FDWs, including the provision of adequate rest. Employers who fail to comply with this requirement can be fined up to $5,000 and/or jailed up to six months. They will also be barred from hiring another maid. In addition, the accreditation bodies have, in 2006, introduced a standard employment contract for FDWs. All accredited employment agencies are required to use this standard contract. The standard contract requires employer to stipulate the number of rest days per month, and zero is not an option, said the minister. Employers are also required to compensate their FDWs salary, should the FDWs work during their rest days. 'This is a more practical approach than legislating a fixed number of rest days per month for FDWs, given the unique nature of domestic work,' added Mr Gan. 'Households that have for example disabled family members who require constant attention may find it difficult to release the FDW for a prescribed period every month. Therefore, allowing households the flexibility to work out an employment arrangement with their FDWs, including paying their FDWs for not taking their rest days, is a more sensible approach. 'Nonetheless, MOM encourages employers to grant FDWs rest days regularly wherever possible.'

Recently, I had the "privilege" to let my car take a day off, so I took my friend's ride. Its a 2 door toyota fwd. We were heading northwards along the cte, after exiting from the sliproad leading out from the PIE. My pal manoevered into the furthest right lane, after executing the necessary checks and right signals. When he was in the furthest right lane, there was this peugeot cabriolet right in front travelling at 70km/h initially. My pal followed close, while maintaining safe following distance still. He didn't pressure the peugeot cabriolet with any horn or high beams. He only picked up speed, whenever the peugeot went faster. When the peugeot finally gave way, the female driver (apparently upset that my friend kept up behind her) turned her head and stared at us. She was road hogging by travelling at 70 to 80 km/h on the highway which has limit of 90 km/h.... Furthest right lane somemore. Moral of the story is, gals can be easily offended... it seems. Even without doing anything, also can offend a female driver. Beware. PS: For the hormone rich homosapiens, ... yes... she is pretty. Ermm... she looked even prettier when she was upset.
