  1. In March 1983, the Traffic Police replaced the PDS (Points Demerit System) with the DIPS (Driver Improvement Points System). Under the former, stricter scheme, Singaporean motorists who accumulated 12 demerit points in a year would have their driving licences revoked. Under DIPS, however, a driver would only lose his licence if he racked up 24 points within two years. New drivers who’d just passed their driving test, on the other hand, still had to abide by “PDS rules” – their licences would be revoked if they amassed more than 12 demerit points within 12 months. But the leniency of DIPS compared to PDS soon attracted criticism. The AAS (Automobile Association of Singapore), for one, was concerned that it might cause some good drivers to go bad, since they had more points to “play” around with. Singapore’s Traffic Police (TP), however, hoped that the doubling of the points and allotted time period would not only give some allowance to motorists who might have unintentionally committed traffic offences, but also persuade repeat offenders to “self-correct” before it was too late. In any case, TP made the penalties for certain offences even stiffer under DIPS – for example, beating the red light used to mean a $150 fine (for light vehicles) and six demerit points, but these were raised to $200 and 12 demerit points respectively after the DIPS was amended in 2000. The scheme had been extended to foreigners the year before, creating a fairer playing field for every motorist who uses our roads regularly. To incentivise motorists to practise good driving habits, any demerit points accumulated under the DIPS scheme will be erased if the driver stays “clean” for the 12 months following his last offence. Any suspensions, too, would be wiped off his driving record if he remains offence-free for two years from the time his licence was suspended. Speaking of which, if your driving suspension is for a year or longer, you’ll have to earn it back later on by passing the theory and practical exams all over again. The best incentive by far is the Certificate of Merit, given to every motorist who maintains a clean driving record for three years straight. This reward entitles him to a five per cent discount on his car insurance premium upon renewal, in addition to any No-Claims bonus, provided his insurer participates in this scheme and he didn’t file any policy claims during the last three years. 2. Hi guys, sorry if this is ever brought up in this forum. Cant seem to search for it. Its regarding about my bro. Ok, here goes. He recently got a class 4 license because he got nothing to do. In addition, he is qualified in Class 2B and Class 3 too. These 2 license has been with him over the last 4 years. Recently, he clocked 14 points over 2 traffic offences on his Honda NSR 150 motorcycle. Knowing that the points system for licenses over 1 year is 24 points over 24 months. However, due to his new Class 4 which allows him 12 points over 12 mths..... May i know whether his license would be affected? (Any class) One more thing.....those traffic cops on the bridge are using what type of cameras? Anyone knows the range?
  3. Following 3 posts are mine, started in another forum, but relevant here too. Ridiculous (?reckless?) driver ask for special privileges in Driver's Improvement Point System (DIPs). Already he is fortunate that the TP will reduce his demerit points to zero in lieu of a clean driving record for 12 months, and suspension ONLY if he receives not less than 24 points in 24 months (non-probationary drivers). E.g. If Mr Chan Ban Choon gets 18 pts (e.g. Exceeding speed limit for road/ vehicle by more than 50 km/h up to 60km/h) on 01June2010, but has a clean driving record up till 01June2011, Mr Chan would be free to commit another 18point traffic violation on 02June2011 (sum total of 36points in 1yr and 1day) without breaking the suspension threshold of 24 demerit points in 24 months. Yet this is still not lenient enough for Mr Chan Ban Choon who thinks that 3 months is enough for him to "reflect on the traffic offence committed". May I kindly suggest that specially for Mr Chan Ban Choon, the TP should IMPOSE a suspension threshold of 3 demerit points every 3 months, and the moment Mr Chan hits 3 demerit points, Mr Chan's license is IMMEDIATELY suspended/ revoked (a special 3 monthly purging of demerit points not withstanding). (BTW, there are no demerit point offences attracting lesser than 3 demerit points) If Mr Chan is unable to operate his motor vehicle on roads safely and without the committal of traffic offences totaling 24 points in 24 months, despite the generous offer of a pristine record for 12 months of safe driving, than Mr Chan had better considering either public transport or the use of a bicycle as part of his work commute. 4. There was apparently a buying frenzy over the weekend of 7 and 8 Jan after COE dipped on 5 Jan bidding. Cycle &Carriage, for example has raised prices of its Kia Cerato Forte by $2K as of 10 Jan. But the salesman told me that he can hold existing prices for me if I commit by this Sun. While in writing, buyers must take at least 50% loan and in-house insurance, I was also told this "can be discussed and they can be flexible." So those keen to commit still have room for negotiation. Probably a good time to commit as prices are expected to rocket once quota is further reduced this year.
