A lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Film and Media Studies, Susanne Chan Pek Lin, 59, was found to have passed away due to a heart attack at home on Sep. 1. She was 59. Just one day before her passing, her younger brother, Leslie Chan Peng Fai, 56, passed away on Aug. 31 morning after battling lung cancer. A cousin of the siblings shared about their passing in an interview with 8world News. Younger brother diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer weeks ago According to the cousin, Leslie, who worked as a private hire vehicle driver, started feeling unwell two months ago, reported 8world. When he visited the hospital, his medical examination results showed that he had Stage 4 lung cancer. "As his condition was quite serious at the time, he received chemotherapy. However, the cancer cells had already spread to his liver, and he passed away on Aug. 31 after being admitted to palliative care," added the cousin. During Leslie's treatment, Susanne "took thorough care of him" and was devastated after losing him to cancer. On the day of his passing, Susanne also helped arrange Leslie's funeral with their cousins and only returned home in the afternoon. Elder sister passed away the next day However, when the cousin tried to contact Susanne on Sep. 1, he did not receive a reply, reported 8world. The family members became worried after she did not show up at Leslie's wake at 11am or pick up any of their subsequent calls. When a female cousin went to Susanne's home and noticed no one answered the door, she alerted the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). With the help of the police and a locksmith, the female cousin entered the flat and made the heartbreaking discovery: Susanne had passed away on her bed in the bedroom. Sibling's 89-year-old mother grief-stricken The passing of two family members in two days left the rest of the family in shock, especially for the sibling's 89-year-old mother, the cousin told 8world. "Their mother is grief-stricken, as she never thought her children would pass away one day apart. However, she is also very strong," he shared. The cousin added that Leslie and Susanne had a good relationship with each other and were very filial to their mother. "Ever since their father passed away several years ago, Leslie and Susanne had been taking care of their mother together. Leslie lived with their mother while Susanne lived on her own," he said. Family to hold sea burial for siblings The family will be holding a sea burial for the siblings, which was their last wish, reported 8world. "Leslie had told me previously that no one would come to his funeral because he was single. Additionally, he did not want to trouble his family members, so he wanted to be buried at sea. Likewise, Susanne had also mentioned that she wanted a sea burial," said the cousin. The rest of the family members will also care of the sibling's mother, he added. Elder sister had good relationship with students, colleagues Besides her family members, Susanne also had a good relationship with her colleagues and students at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, reported 8world. Many of them attended her wake on Sep. 3 and 4. One student shared that it was Susanne who helped change her mind and regain her confidence when she was crying over her major, which she did not like, and thinking of dropping out of school. Another student also shared that Susanne had only retired recently in late February 2024 because she wanted to travel the world and do what she liked. In 2023, Susanne received the Long Service Medal as the lead of her department at the polytechnic. According to the Prime Minister's Office, the medal is awarded to individuals who are "of irreproachable character" and whom the president is satisfied to have completed at least 25 years of service in educational organisations, amongst others. https://mothership.sg/2024/09/singapore-siblings-pass-away-1-day-apart/

https://mothership.sg/2022/03/fried-banana-seller-death-penang/ A 74-year-old fried banana seller in Penang fainted suddenly while cooking at her hawker stall on Sunday (Mar. 13). As a result, she fell into the wok containing hot oil and suffered severe burns to her face and body, later succumbing to her injuries. Pain was so intense she couldn't speak According to Malaysian Chinese daily Kwong Wah Yit Poh, the incident occurred around 3pm on Mar. 13. The elderly woman — identified as Zhong Bixuan — was frying bananas when she suddenly fainted, falling into the wok of hot oil. Her head and upper body were plunged into wok full of hot oil, resulting in severe burns on her face and body. A resident described the elderly woman as feeling like her body was being stabbed by thousands of hot needles, and added that the pain was so intense that Zhong could not speak. Zhong was then rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, where she passed away later that night. Had been in the business for over 30 years Zhong had been selling fried bananas for more than 30 years, Kwong Wah reported. Her second son, Chen Zhenping, told media that his mother had been working in the hawker stall with his 80-year-old father at the time of the incident. When asked whether he would take over his mother's stall, Chen explained that he is currently managing his own stall in Seremban. Thus, he will temporarily close his mother's stall and then make plans in the future. Top photos via Kwong Wai Yit Poh.

One person had a serious head injury while the second person complained of chest pain, a spokesperson said. mobile phones again .... Six-year-old girl dies after near-drowning in pool with lifeguards, swimming instructor distracted The state coroner criticised two lifeguards and a swimming instructor after a six-year-old girl, who did not know how to float or swim independently without support, died following a near-drowning at Kallang Basin Swimming Complex. On Dec 20, 2017, little Sherlyn Ler was left to fend for herself for at least four minutes as she swam using a swimming board. Her instructor, Mr Yeo Chwee Chuan, had led her to the pool's mid-point during her 7pm lesson before allowing the girl to swim to the edge. But he then turned away to focus on his other students, aged six to eight years old. Of the two lifeguards near the teaching pool, one was busy on his mobile phone while the other spent time arranging chairs. In an inquiry into her death on Tuesday (April 2), State Coroner Kamala Ponnampalam said: "The lifeguard should not be distracted by the use of his personal devices or idle chit-chat. "He should never leave his post unguarded. Drowning is known to occur quickly and quietly between 20 and 60 seconds." She also noted several lapses in Mr Yeo's management of his lesson, saying his class formation was "poor". "At several points in time, more than one student was out of his line of sight... Ideally, the child, especially one who is not an independent swimmer, should be within arm's reach," added the state coroner, who found Sherlyn's death a tragic misadventure. Although the girl's mother was seated on a nearby platform to keep an eye on her daughter, she too became distracted by her phone and when she turned to speak to other people. Moments after Mr Yeo turned his back, the 1.11m tall Sherlyn went under in a pool where the water's depth was between 0.8m and 1m. She died in hospital on Jan 9 last year from a lack of oxygen and blood flowing to the brain following the near-drowning. The Straits Times understands that Mr Yeo's coaching licence has been suspended by Sport SG and Mr Firdaus Rajatmarican and Mr Law Kum Wah, who left the pool unattended for at least four minutes, are no longer lifeguards. It emerged at the hearing that at 7.05pm, Mr Firdaus, who had been watching over the training pool, asked Mr Law to take over his duty as he needed to use the washroom. The state coroner said that closed-circuit television footage showed Mr Firdaus looking at his phone while Mr Law was arranging some chairs in the area. At about 7.15pm, two girls in the pool noticed Sherlyn floating face up and alerted Mr Law. Mr Law and Mr Yeo swam towards the girl and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on her. Paramedics arrived at the swimming complex at around 7.30pm and she was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, before being transferred to KK Women's and Children's Hospital the next day. State Coroner Kamala said that according to Mr Garett Lim, who is a trainer of the Swimsafer programme at Sport SG, Sherlyn should not have been left to swim alone. She was about 10m from her coach when the incident happened. Mr Lim also said the swimming board is a poor flotation device which is not stable and may float away, leaving the child unaided. The state coroner added: "Children, in particular, need constant supervision around water which cannot be done if the coach is not able to see them." Sherlyn's family members were in court on Tuesday but they declined to comment.

1-month-old baby dies on full month celebration after grandfather gives him alcohol https://www.asiaone.com/china/1-month-old-baby-dies-full-month-celebration-after-grandfather-gives-him-alcohol?xtor=EREC-16-4%5BEmarsys_Newsletter%5D-20190718&extid=6934d0cfb7b252f1ae9f0dbddf5ff88ca8637e77 Tragedy befell a family recently when a newborn baby died after his grandfather fed him a sip of alcohol, on his first-month celebration. The incident shows the dangers of giving alcohol to a baby, even in tiny amounts. According to an article on Sin Chew Daily on 12 July 2019, the incident happened in Beijing, China. Many friends and relatives had turned up at the baby's full month celebration, which is traditionally held to bless the child and celebrate the arrival of a new member of the family. The child's paternal grandfather was apparently carrying him when he proposed a toast to his relatives. Things took a rather weird turn when one of the relatives joked that the grandfather couldn't drink if the baby didn't drink. The grandfather fell for the taunt, he grabbed a cup of alcohol and gave the baby a sip, to "save his face". When the child's mother got to know what had happened, she was furious. She grabbed her baby back into her arms. But the damage had been done. The baby became breathless after just 30 minutes. He was rushed to the hospital, but hospital staff were unable to save the little one. Doctors found out that, the cause of the child's death was alcohol poisoning. "Babies cannot drink alcohol, how can you treat a child's life as if it's a joke?" they asked the grandfather. It has been reported that the baby's heartbroken mum was unable to believe what had happened, and she slapped her father-in-law multiple times. Apparently, the mum had been ill-treated by her in-laws previously, because she was unable to conceive even after 3 years of marriage. Things got better only after she was blessed with a baby boy. Fate though had other plans. According to a report by Dr Taylor McCormick (Department of Emergency Medicine, Los Angeles County & University of Southern California Medical Center), babies appear to metabolise alcohol faster than adults. Alcohol affects the central nervous system. Children's bodies absorb alcohol quickly, and this can occur in less than 30 minutes. Symptoms of alcohol poisoning in babies can include difficulty breathing, reduced activity, and seizures. Some studies have also found a risk for low blood sugar. The long-term effects on the baby are unclear. However, breathing difficulties could deprive the baby's brain of oxygen, possibly causing brain damage. In the case of breastfeeding mothers, the CDC recommends that not drinking alcohol is the safest option. Generally, moderate alcohol consumption by a breastfeeding mother (up to 1 standard drink per day) is not known to be harmful to the infant. However, the mother should wait for at least 2 hours after a single drink before breastfeeding her baby. Breast milk will contain alcohol as long as alcohol is still in the mother's bloodstream. Alcohol levels are usually highest in breast milk 30-60 minutes after alcohol is consumed. The length of time alcohol can be detected in breast milk will increase the more alcohol a mother consumes. For example, alcohol from 1 drink can be detected in breast milk for about 2-3 hours, alcohol from 2 drinks can be detected for about 4-5 hours, and alcohol from 3 drinks can be detected for about 6-8 hours, and so on. Exposure to alcohol above moderate levels through breast milk can damage an infant's development, growth, and sleep patterns. High alcohol consumption can also impair a mother's judgment and ability to safely care for her child. Over time, excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to decreased milk production. The Cranberries lead singer Dolores O'Riordan has died suddenly at the age of 46, her publicist has confirmed. The Irish musician, originally from Limerick, led the band to international success in the 90s with singles including Linger and Zombie. A statement from her publicist said: "The lead singer with the Irish band The Cranberries was in London for a short recording session. "No further details are available at this time." A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said the police were called to a hotel in Park Lane at 09:05 GMT on Monday, where "a woman in her mid-40s" was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is, at this stage, unexplained. Her current band mates in The Cranberries - Noel Hogan, Fergal Lawler, and Mike Hogan - paid tribute to the lead singer on social media. The message said: "She was an extraordinary talent and we feel very privileged to been part of her life from 1989." Her publicist added: "Family members are devastated to hear the news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time." The Cranberries shot to international fame with their 1993 debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? and went on to sell over 40 million records worldwide. In 2017 The Cranberries announced a tour including dates in Europe, the UK, and the US. However, in May - shortly into the European tour - the group had to cancel the remainder of the European dates as a result of O'Riordan's health issues. The official Cranberries website cited "medical reasons associated with a back problem" preventing singer Dolores O'Riordan from performing. But just before Christmas O'Riordan had posted on Facebook saying she was "feeling good" and had done her "first bit of gigging in months", leading fans to believe she would soon be performing again. O'Riordan tweeted a picture of herself with her cat to fans in early January saying she was "off to Ireland". O'Riordan split from her husband of 20 years, Don Burton in 2014. She and Burton, who is the former tour manager of Duran Duran, have three children together. The singer was arrested over an alleged air rage incident in 2014 but was released without charge, after a stewardess was reportedly attacked on a flight from New York to Shannon, County Clare. O'Riordan was taken to hospital in Limerick after being questioned by police and later discharged. Two years later, O'Riordan was ordered to pay 6,000 euros (£5,300) to charity for headbutting a police officer after an alleged air rage incident. She was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2015, which she said explained why she was in a "manic" state on the plane. In an interview in 2013 she said that she had been abused as a child, which led to her developing an eating disorder, and eventually she suffered a breakdown. She described her family, especially her children, as her "salvation". Irish president Michael D Higgins called her death "a big loss", and added O'Riordan's work with The Cranberries "had an immense influence on rock and pop music in Ireland and internationally". Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar said she was probably "Limerick's greatest ever rock star", and that her band "captured all of the angst that came with your teenage years". 'Unforgettable voice' The Kinks guitarist and singer Dave Davies paid tribute to O'Riordan, saying he was "shocked" and that he had seen her "a couple weeks before Christmas". He added "she seemed happy and well". A book of condolence will be opened in her home town of Limerick on Tuesday, at the city council's headquarters. O'Riordan, the youngest of seven children, had written her own songs since she was 12. She joined the band while still in her teens, after spotting an advert for a female singer for rock band The Cranberry Saw Us. Later changed to The Cranberries, the band's most successful tracks include Linger (1993), Zombie (1994) - a protest song about bombings that took place in relation to the conflict in Northern Ireland - as well as No Need To Argue (1994) and To the Faithful Departed (1996). O'Riordan briefly pursued a solo career after the band split in 2003, before The Cranberries reunited in 2009.

Filipino businesswoman dies after multiple cosmetic surgeries in one session An attractive 29-year-old Filipino businesswoman, who underwent multiple plastic surgeries in one go, died after the procedures on Sunday (March 26). The Philippine Star reported that Shiryl Saturnino went under the knife for breast and butt enhancement as well as liposuction at a clinic in Mandaluyong City, east of Manila. The series of procedures began after her arrival at the clinic at 5pm on Saturday and ended only at 2.40am the next day. After the operation, the doctors discovered that Saturnino's heart had stopped beating. After attempts to revive her failed, the doctors sought the assistance of Makati Medical Center. But it was too late - she was declared dead at around 3.21am. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death and will investigate whether there was negligence by the doctors during the operation, reported Kami.com The legal counsel of Icon Clinic told Inquirer.net in a statement that Saturnino was a "valued and regular patient whom we took care of for many years". "Right now, there is an ongoing investigation on what really caused the passing of Ms. Saturnino. It is our responsibility to inform the public about the truth and we are fully cooperating with the investigation," said lawyer Estelita Cordero. The clinic said it is "extending full support" to her family in their time of grief. However, it will remain "fully operational" while helping in investigation. Meanwhile news of her untimely death has set social media abuzz, sparking debate on the obsession with looking good and whether there was negligence. As netizens expressed their condolences, some also had spiritual reminders. "Beauty is not a passport" to heaven, said one of them. Over in America, authorities are also investigating the death of a 25-year-old Missouri woman who died after undergoing a cosmetic procedure known as a Brazilian butt lift at a Miami-area clinic. The death of Ranika Hall, a mother of a one-year-old daughter from Kansas City, last Thursday (March 20) came nearly a year after a 29-year-old mother of two died following a similar procedure at the same clinic, which at that time was known by a different name, reported CBS News. http://www.asiaone.com/asia/filipino-businesswoman-dies-after-multiple-cosmetic-surgeries-one-session

The school bus driver thought the 11-year-old boy had fallen asleep in his seat. But when he tried to wake the boy upon reaching Maris Stella Primary School yesterday morning, the Primary 5 pupil did not respond. He was later pronounced dead at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH). The New Paper understands the boy was on his way to school when he became unresponsive. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received a call at about 6.55am yesterday and sent an ambulance to the school. Police received a call around the same time yesterday asking for help "at 80, Bartley Road". UNCONSCIOUS They found an 11-year-old boy unconscious when they arrived and he was taken to KKH, "where he was subsequently pronounced dead at about 8.46am," their spokesman said. TNP understands that the boy was living with his grandparents and a maid here and that his parents were overseas when he died. An SMS that was circulated around Maris Stella Primary yesterday informed all of the incident and asked them to pray for the boy and his family. One parent, who declined to be named, said the boy had a fever on Mondayand was sent home early. He said: "The school principal spoke to his class and told them about the news. We heard he was an only child and his parents are currently out of the country." Mrs Woo Soo Min, principal of Maris Stella Primary, said in an e-mail to TNP that the school was "saddened by the passing of one of our students". "We are in touch with the family and are providing assistance and support to them during this difficult time. We are also providing emotional support to affected staff and students. As the police is investigating this case, we are unable to comment further," she said. Police are investigating the unnatural death. Correction note: An earlier version of this story said TNP understood that the boy's parents were overseas at the time of the incident. Family members have told media that the parents were in Singapore. The story has been corrected. - See more at: http://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore-news/maris-stella-pupil-11-dies-school-bus?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook#link_time=1472604456 Really sad.
