The ship’s captain made an announcement over the public announcement system at about 2.45am, informing guests to remain in their rooms and adding that the ship would arrive in Singapore by about 8am. Royal Caribbean last week resumed three and four night Ocean Getaway cruises as part of a safe cruising pilot programme announced in October by the Singapore Tourism Board. Pandemic safety measures include a reduced 50 per cent capacity and pre-boarding testing for passengers.
  3. Singapore restarting cruises: Boost for economy, but not plain sailing source: https://www.straitstimes.com/opinion/restarting-cruises-boost-for-economy-but-not-plain-sailing It may sound like a good way to help the economy, but it could easily be a disaster waiting to happen. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has announced that it will allow pilot "cruises to nowhere" from next month, with safety measures in place. This sounds fine, in theory. It's true that Singapore risks harming its economy if it does not return to some form of normalcy. But when it comes to cruises, the risks may outweigh potential rewards. Consider what cruises entail in the first place. Passengers eat, they take part in activities, and they generally relax outside of their cabins. Even accepting that each cruise ship carries only half the number of passengers it can normally accommodate, it would still host more than 1,000 people over a period of days. One of the participating ships in the pilot project has a normal capacity of more than 3,300 and the other has a maximum capacity of 4,900. And that is without counting the crew. Those on board are supposed to wear masks. But we know that while masks do reduce the transmission rate, they do not completely stop the coronavirus from spreading. And passengers will not be masked during meals. There is also the risk of transmitting the virus through common surfaces passengers touch while they help themselves to the food. And even if the food is served at the counter by crew, there are still many possible contact points. Do you stop passengers from touching walls and handrails when they go for a stroll on deck? Or from talking to one another when taking part in activities? There are just so many possibilities for Covid-19 transmission. One might argue that the same may be said of people in shopping malls or supermarkets. But they do not mingle for several days. Nor are they stuck together in an enclosed space, interacting through on-board activities. People excited or having a good time tend to talk louder, increasing the transmission risk. Expert opinion on the risks posed by such cruises is divided. Professor Dale Fisher, a senior infectious diseases consultant at National University Hospital, and Professor Ooi Eng Eong of Duke-NUS Medical School's emerging infectious diseases programme see the move as another step towards normalising life here. "It's not only about prioritising the safest activities; there is a balance with social and economic factors," said Prof Fisher. Prof Ooi agreed that it is important to balance the risks against the livelihoods of many, adding: "It would be the same as any staycation." Dr Asok Kurup, who chairs the Academy of Medicine's Chapter of Infectious Disease Physicians, is more concerned that cruises usually attract older people - who are more vulnerable to Covid-19. He said: "Socialising is another reason older folks go for cruises, (play) mahjong, et cetera. The skew towards more elderly passengers in such settings, in possibly confined environments, means the need to be super vigilant and have very thorough policing of measures." How is that going to happen? The STB said the ships must have "measures to discourage close contact and inter-mingling between groups". Discourage, not prohibit. People may intermingle, gather and chat. Even if rules are laid out, they may be breached. Even if the crew take action against paying passengers, the damage may have been done. The website of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States - the worst-hit country in the world - says: "Cruise ships pose a greater risk of Covid-19 transmission than other settings" as they "are typically more densely populated than cities or most other living situations". It advises Americans to defer cruise travel. Professor Alex Cook, vice-dean of research at the National University of Singapore's Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, is also dead set against such cruises. He asked: "Are cruise ships the hill we want to die on?" He pointed out that there is no guarantee that all passengers are free from Covid-19. A passenger who gets infected the day before boarding "is almost certainly going to test negative on embarking", said Prof Cook. During incubation, the person would test negative - but could turn positive in a day or two, in other words, during the cruise. Should an outbreak result, he warned, "we'll need to be ready to handle the contact tracing and quarantining that would be necessary". The CDC said there is also risk in "crew living and working in close quarters in a partially enclosed environment where social distancing may prove challenging, even with a limited number of people on board". Should a crew member be infected but be asymptomatic, it could "keep the virus circulating from one voyage to the next". The STB says it is allowing such cruises "in line with the calibrated resumption of economic activities in Singapore". Yes, it is important to keep the economy going. And yes, many people here want to go on holiday again. But the risk appears too high. The outcome is uncertain - it could be beneficial or highly damaging. In the best-case scenario, no transmission occurs on board and everyone has a good time. But the worst that could happen - and there is no guarantee that it won't - is a major outbreak that, if spread to the community by asymptomatic carriers, could bring more economic activities to a halt. Surely there are better ways to kick-start the economy?

  5. Hi all, anyone has any idea where I can get the Hyundai Elantra 2018 cruise control panel that is supposedly on the steering wheel?
  6. Hi, I wonder if it's only me but twice when I was travelling in the MCE (the stretch under Marina Barrage), my car suddenly applied the brake when approaching the 2 sections with the speed cams. First, my radar cruise control was activated, set to 80 km/h. Lane ahead was clear (and fortunately no cars behind me). But when I approach the 2 spots with the speed camera, my car brake momentary as if it detected a vehicle ahead. I cancelled cruise control in time to resume the drive. On the 2nd occasion, it just continued driving after a pre-collision alert "BRAKE" alert on the screen for 1 second, then cleared as if nothing happens. Does anyone face the same issue? I'm driving a 2018 Toyota Camry with Toyota Safety Sense.

Passengers at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore have complained about long waits at the immigration checkpoints, and for taxis. -- ST PHOTO: KEVIN LIM By Melissa Lin Traffic on the roads around the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore (MBCCS) came to a standstill last Thursday when two large cruise ships docked at the passenger seaport on the same morning. Between them, the luxury liner Queen Mary II of the Cunard Cruise Line and Voyager of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean International, can take more than 5,000 passengers. It created a bottleneck of vehicles arriving and going. Though Thursday's incident was especially protracted, traffic congestion is one of a string of problems to plague MBCCS since it began operations in May 2012. 8. This was the sailaway party on the Royal Caribbean Legend of the Seas. Check out this boy in red and sunglasses dancing to 'Gentleman' by Psy, of Gangnam style fame. The boy was asked by the Sailaway party crew (Cruise Director staff) to be the 'Gentleman' in this dance. That boy obviously knows the moves to this dance by Psy. Quite cute, with his sunglasses too.
  9. Hi MCFers, I am talking a cruise to penang and has about 5 hours in George Town. Wondering what are the places to go within this time frame. I have in mind Kek Lok Si temple, Chew Jetty, Fort Cornwallis and Penang street art. Is this overly ambitious ? And I would appreciate if you could advise the taxi charges. I heard can book them for a few hours on a fixed rate...
  10. Just got back. I will share videos of my recent holiday here. Privileged and blessed to be able to travel and see the world with the family. Awesome trip. For this trip, the plan was to take a cruise out of Genoa, Italy. The problem was that Genoa was pretty hard to get to. So, to get there, we first flew to London, stayed one night, then flew from London Stansted to Genoa via Ryanair, stayed on night in Genoa, then boarded the ship for a 7N cruise covering ports like Civitavecchia (for Rome), Palermo, Malta, Marseilles, Barcelona (not in that order). On disembarkation day, we took British Airways flight back from Genoa to Gatwick, and spent some nights in London before heading home. That, in gist, was the plan. The rest of this thread, I will post videos (probably in random order). First day in London, arrived quite early, went for a walk. Here were some aggressive ducks in London Regent's Park. The Triton Fountain, also at London Regent's Park. Very bright and quite cool, around 11 deg. A boy feeding pigeons. Quite fun.
  11. I know this isn't very glam but hey, life is short, so here is a video of me screaming my lungs out as I take a water slide. Serious. Not a joke. Ciao.
  12. This thread is about Norwegian Cruise Line, or NCL for short. This company is owned by the Genting group, which also owns Star Cruises. For this reason, NCL does not sail to Asia because the sister brands do not want to compete directly. NCL ships sail primarily in the Caribbean, Europe and Hawaii. We have only sailed with NCL once, but found the experience to be quite good. Compared to Royal Caribbean, their older ships are more 'basic' in features and certainly do not have all the 'Wow' factors like a Royal Promenade, Ice-Skating ring etc. However, their newer ships seem to be more exciting. We haven't sailed on the bigger and newer ships, so we don't have first hand experience. When we read the Cruise Critic Boards and other forums on cruising, many people said that NCL itineraries were more port intensive (i.e. fewer sea days) and also the suite life on NCL was superior to most cruise lines. So, when we found a very good deal in a 2-bedroom Penthouse suite, coupled with a good itinerary, we jumped on it. We sailed on the NCL Jade out of Rome late last year. We squeezed the maximum number of pax into the 2 bedroom suite, i.e. 6. A bit of a squeeze, but still fine for us as one big family. Here is the video I made of the suite. The best suite perks I felt were the suite-only breakfast and lunch at a speciality restaurant called Cagney's. What do I mean? Suite passengers are entitled to have breakfast and lunch every day at a speciality restaurant on board. The menu is the same every day, but more than adequate for us because we like the type of food they serve. These videos show you what I mean. Cagney's Lunch I will post more videos later.
  13. During one of our cruise stops recently, we had a day in Athens. Technically the ship called at the Port of Piraeus, which was very near Athens. We hired a private driver to bring us around for the day, and it was a wonderful day with good weather, bearing in mind this was December (i.e. winter). We saw the changing of guards at the Greek Parliament, went up Mt Lycabettus, Acropolis including Aeropagus, New Acropolis museum and other sights. I made several videos but here is just one short video summarizing what we did that day. http://youtu.be/bfABTgvEFRY If there is interest here, please shout out and I will post more of my review. Have a great day!
  14. Super Star Virgo had been around for the past 15 over years and this is the first time going on board with my whole family next week. (a bit suah koo..... ). Might not want to board again after this trip. Just want to get the experience on board a cruise ship. Will be on board for 3 days 2 nights cruise to KL and I had planned to stay on the ship throughout. The stopover at Malacca & KL doesn't attract me as been to both places countless times. I would like to make full use of the journey to explore the ship as much as possible and would like to seek fellow members (who had been to the ship) suggestions where the best places to enjoy during the journey. Will limit myself at the casino for 2 hours only (throughout the journey) and the rest is exploring, exploring, exploring......... Your suggestion(s) and recommendation is very much appreciated. Regards.

  19. As above...my 4 year old badly need a cruise control...find driving up north very tiring to control the pedal. Any bro got recommendation?
  20. I only use a few times on the cruise control in 2 years, find that Sg road traffic is not suitable to drive on cruise control. I have tested car with paddle shift like Golf, Mz 3 n 6 and Civic with paddle swift, but I perfer to use the gear stick than paddle swift to down swift in sport mode for up slope climbing in expressway. And my friend always leave the gear in sport mode all the time as the car can rev higher PRM before change gear. How often you will use the paddle swift n Cruise Control on your steering wheel?
  21. Anyone know if we can get cruise control device for Optra? It will be convenient for those that travel up north. The right hand side of the steering wheel seems to have a provision for this.

  25. Last month, Toyota recalled 133,000 2010 Prius models due to a braking issue that could cause a momentary loss of stopping power. However, in many of the claims filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vehicle's cruise control was brought into question, with drivers stating that they had difficulty getting the system to turn off when the brake pedal was depressed. According to Ward's Auto, 11 percent of all 2010 Prius complaints filed with NHTSA cite this issue. Toyota is now starting to look deeper into these complaints, and believes that the majority of them are the result of driver confusion over the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), which is an option on the top-rung Prius V trim. In talking with Ward's, Toyota spokesperson Dave Lee says that drivers are confusing the Prius' adaptive cruise control for unintended acceleration. Lee states that when drivers use the cruise stalk to adjust vehicle speed, the rate of acceleration is much higher than when the gas pedal is pressed
