  1. Dear all, In view of the increasing number of accidents at traffic-light junctions where vehicles have hit and killed crossing pedestrians, I will be writing to LTA to propose changing the right-turn signalling sequence at all traffic-light junctions with pedestrian crossings. Presently many traffic-light right-turn signalling works by allowing the pedestrians to cross the roads simultaneously as vehicles turn right across their paths. This method theoretically reduces the overall waiting time for everyone in the system because it allows right-turning motorists to utilise pockets of time to go-ahead whenever there are no crossing pedestrians. However, due to fatigue, carelessness, blind-spots and other reasons, there have been many instances of pedestrians getting run over by right-turning vehicles. Many of such accidents involve larger vehicles which, due to their size and larger blind-spots, are harder to control. I would like to propose that the right-turning signalling be changed at such junctions so that right-turning vehicles cannot proceed to do so until the traffic lights have turned red for the crossing pedestrians. While this cannot totally eradicate similar accidents that arise due to jay-walking pedestrians, it will likely reduce the overall accident rates given that most pedestrians do obey the traffic crossing signals. Through this petition I hope LTA will treat this issue with greater urgency and have it implemented sooner than later before more innocent lives are lost. If you support this initiative, please indicate your user name below and I will update this first post: a. OmOm b. I will send out the petition to LTA once we achieve at least 50 (do suggest if you think this number could be smaller or larger) on this list. Thanks to all for your help!
  2. Are those raise rectangular humps (not semi circular) with vertical yellow/black stripes meant for pedestrian crossings or just to slow down traffics? usually found along HDB service roads...
  3. In my daily drives, I have encountered many instances of cyclist speeding up and trying to beat the "flashing green man" at pedestrian crossings, resulting in near-misses for both drivers and even fellow pedestrians. Just yesterday, I witnessed this SBS feeder bus making a left turn. After the pedestrians had finished crossing, the bus started to move off and all of a sudden, the driver had to brake hard when a cyclist suddenly appeared from the left-side of the half-turned bus and cut in front of the turning bus. The bus stopped inches from the cyclist but instead of being thankful for not being runned-over, the cyclist stopped in front of the bus and started gesturing at the poor driver and also hurled verbal abuses.I have to salute the bus captain for being cool-headed and he just ignored the cyclist and continued his journey after a brief 30-sec commotion. Some cyclists want the best of both worlds, " Green light for vehicles, go! Green man for pedestrians, go!". I feel strongly that cyclists should dismount and push their bicycles at zebra-crossings and also other pedestrian crossings. It may be inconvenient, but it may save lives, As a fellow road-user, I feel that everyone has a role to play to ensure road safety for all.
  4. Not sure if traffic law allows bicyclists to happily ride across the streets using zebra crossings? I have encountered many such cases recently but if safety is not compromised, I dont give them a chance:- I wont stop for them..... if they want to cross, please get off and push the bikes and walk like a pedestrian... especially he/she is a foreigner from either china or india/pakistan etc......... zebra crossings are called and meant for pedestrian crossing.... not bike crossings
  5. I wonder what is the status of these cyclists. Happened to me several times already. When the group of pedestrians clear the traffic light, suddenly a cyclist zooms in from no where and I almost hit him. Logically speaking, they do not have the right to use these crossings. Who's rights is protected when a cyclist is knocked down at a pedestrian crossing? Does anyone know?
  6. This morning I was at the Zebra Crossing. I positioned myself getting ready to cross and one comfort taxi just bochup me and zoom past. I see that the other comfort taxi behind is slowing down, so I put out my left leg ready to cross. At the last moment, the taxi decided to speed up and almost hit me. Question is: Is it an offence for a driver not to stop at the Zebra Crossing for pedestrians to cross the road?
