On 1 May 2023, a crash involving a lorry and a Hyundai taxi took place at the junction of Bras Basah Road and Nicoll Highway in front of Suntec Convention Centre. It is unclear as to the causes of the crash as the two cars are faced away from each other. The lorry was facing towards the entrance of Esplanade MRT while the taxi still faced the direction of the road. Think of one of those diagrams for vectors in O-Levels (ughhhhh). The lorry has been flipped to its side, while the taxi is some distance away from it with an open fuel tank and missing its entire front end. I’m really confused by this crash because the taxi is some distance away from the lorry, facing a completely different direction than the lorry even after impact. But somehow it was not hit with enough force to flip the taxi over or deal more structural damage. The video also shows a glimpse of a deployed airbag in the taxi, but no signs of any one having been inside the vehicle. SCDF personnel were present to close off the scene and gather evidence from the taxi. The taxi also left a trail of fluids behind it and intermittent skid marks on the road. If the trail is wet, does it become diarrhea instead? We do not know the condition of the drivers or if any pedestrians were involved. The karma in this one was instantaneous. It hit like a taxi, in fact. What happened? An MPV tried to run a red light just in front of Lau Pa Sat at Raffles Quay. At this time, a taxi was moving forward as the green light had just come on for its lane. There was no visible attempt at braking on the MPV’s side. This resulted in a T-bone as the taxi was perfectly positioned to hit the side of the MPV as it was moving, causing it to lose stability and flip to its side. I’m also suspecting that it’s a variant of a Toyota Alphard because the front grille looks remarkably similar, but the fog lights are throwing me off. I also like how in the video the other cars stopped for a bit to take in the crash, and then moved on with their day and carried on lol. We thought ComfortDelGro taxi drivers should be the most well-mannered taxi drivers on our island based on service standards, but this driver's actions made us stop and think. What made us think otherwise? This video of a very pissed-off taxi driver confronting the cam car driver for sounding his horn at him. Rewinding back to how it all started, the cam car can be heard sounding his horn at the taxi driver after a passenger gets off at a sheltered crossing. The taxi driver then proceeds to move off slowly, triggering the cam car driver to toot his horn in impatience. The taxi driver does not react to the first horn which leads to a few more horns from cam car. This is where it gets interesting. The taxi driver's pissed off at this point, he takes his time to slowly drive into the carpark and stops on the second level to confront the cam car driver. We don't really know what happened after the taxi driver got off his taxi since most of the clip is on mute. Thankfully, no one got hurt in this road rage incident. Could this have been avoided if the cam car just overtook the taxi at the shelter? Let us know! Not an isolated incident That is not the end of the story though. The buses, the first of their kind here, will start plying routes from Sunday as part of ComfortDelGro Bus' unscheduled bus services. The Volvo B8R 49-seaters are equipped to brake automatically and come to a stop if they ''sense'' a collision is about to take place. A radar-based sensor and a camera are activated once the bus accelerates past 15kmh. When a potential collision with another vehicle is detected, the system alerts the driver through a blinking red light on the dashboard and a beeping sound. If the driver still does not respond, the system immediately initiates soft braking before applying full braking power to bring the bus to a complete stop before any collision happens. The system also comes with a lane-keeping assist function that alerts the driver when the bus veers into other lanes. Such safety systems are increasingly common in passenger cars but are making their way into heavy vehicles now. Mr Pang Weng Heng, chief executive of ComfortDelGro Bus, said the system is a ''safety enhancement that will help our bus drivers avoid critical situations and accidents''. ComfortDelGro Bus plans to buy more of such buses over the next two years. Six of its drivers have undergone training to familiarise themselves with the new safety feature. On the latest purchase, ComfortDel- Gro spokesman Tammy Tan said the features cost $5,000 to $8,000 a bus, or roughly 1 per cent of its cost. ''There are plans to purchase 11 more of such buses over the next two years,'' she added, noting the Volvos are also equipped with reverse proximity sensors and reverse cameras. ComfortDelGro Bus tested the buses for a month and will deploy them as part of a shuttle service. Ms Tan said no special skills are required to drive them, but drivers need to familiarise themselves with the system and the alerts. When asked if it plans to equip public buses with similar features, the Land Transport Authority, which owns all public buses here, said up to 400 of its buses are likely to have some form of collision warning system by 2040. That is less than 10 per cent of the current fleet of public buses here.

Transport giant ComfortDelGro has rolled out an on-demand bus service. The listed bus and rail operator said that its trial ComfortConnect service has been available to residents in Tanjong Rhu and Meyer Road since 15 August. The service operates from Mondays to Fridays between 10:00am and 4:00pm, and serves 16 stops, including most of the condominiums in the Tanjong Rhu / Meyer Road area, Parkway Parade, the Singapore Swimming Club and Dunman High School. One is to have a dominant player which is well regulated. The other is to have multiple players and let natural competition keep them in check. "My personal view is that there has to be first of all, evidence that market size leads to efficiency," he said. "Secondly, there must be an appropriate lever to ensure that an enlarged player does not abuse its power." Meanwhile, consumers do not seem too worried that Grab - with its ambitions of becoming a major player in the food, payment and loan sectors - would have access to information on how they travel, eat and spend. "With the Government's cashless drive, consumers like myself will have to face the fact that my data is being collected," Mr Choo said. "My concern lies with how secure my data is." Said Ms Zhang: "I am quite indifferent to that... since many apps or even devices are already collecting such data." The device is programmed to start recording once the engine is turned on and will do so continuously for up to four hours. Its sensor is also able to activate one-minute video recordings once it detects sudden shocks to the taxi. Equipped with a 140 deg focus lens and a 2.7-inch LCD screen, the cameras retail for $388 each but will be installed for free in the taxis. Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that they were alerted to the incident around 12.45pm and they promptly dispatched one fire engine, one Red Rhino and two fire motorbikes to the scene. The driver of the ComfortDelGro taxi said that she stopped her taxi at the road shoulder after she saw smoke emerging from her car bonnet, reported Channel NewsAsia. Minutes later, the bonnet caught fire. SCDF firefighters reached the scene shortly after. According to SCDF, the fire was put out within ten minutes and no one was injured. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire. This is the second incident in less than a month that a taxi has caught fire along an expressway. On April 24, a Comfort Hyundai Sonata taxi burst into flames in a tunnel on the Central Expressway (CTE), causing a massive jam that stretched all the way to Ang Mo Kio.
