found this entertaining read on the feng shui of Singapore $1 coin.. Nope.. Not only on the Ba Gua shape (and its myth) but more into details.. Part ONE: Have you even seen a $1 Singapore coin? It is hexagon shaped. The one dollar coin is inscribed with an octagon, which looks like a Chinese Bagua. It seems that the Feng Shui masters in Singapore said that the construction of the MRT tunnels through downtown Singapore would have a negative effect on the country and her people. To counter this, they recommended that every household display a bagua to negate this. As there were many locals who did not adhere to this Chinese belief, the hexagon shaped design was incorporated into the one dollar coin. Hearsay has it that Singapore's senior minister, Lee Kwan Yew who is a firm believer in Feng Shui was told by fortune tellers that his dynasty would remain in power as long as the octagon was spread throughout Singapore. There is another story about Mr Lee again making some changes on the face of the one dollar coin to correct the Feng Shui of his country's economy. Ever spotted the difference? I wonder how many of you noticed the differences between a more dated $1 coin and one that is more recently created. I

The goreng pisang stall at Old Airport Hawker Centre dun accept 5ct coin. There is a notice pasted at the front of the stall. By doing so, is the stall owner committing an offence under the Currency Act?

Read about this interesting though unconventional park bench designed by a German Fabian Brunsig. It was designed to, and I quote, "protest against the commercialisation of modern life" You put in 0.5 Euro, the spikes retract and you have yourself a nice spot to sit down, rest your legs but you have to get up after sometime when a siren announces the impending rise of the spikes. It was reported that Yantai Park in Shangdong Province in Eastern China actually installed this type of benches. Here's the website of the designer and a video clip on how the bench works: http://www.fabianbrunsing.de/

I posted few days ago (6/12/07) on POSB who charges $4.50 for coins deposit by a child who was given a "Piggy Bank" in form of a 'can' by POSB in school so as to encourage him to save. His mother was fuming mad and wrote to the ST Forum page to complain. In today ST Forum (11/12/07) read: "POSB Staff Wrong to Levy Coin-deposit Fee" DBS reply : We are disappointed that we failed Mdm Tan's son when he went to our branch to deposit his saving into his personal POSB account. In conjunction with the Children's Day this year, we produce specially-designed POSBkids Savers coin banks tp encourage our young customers to start saving. When the coin banks are filled up, the children can bring their savings to their favourite POSB branch and deposit the money into their POSBkids saving accounts. No coin-deposit fee is levied for these children. We are sorry that our staff at the branch made a mistake and deducted the amount from his account. We have spoken to Mdm Tan and apologised to her and her son, and have since refunded the fee to his account. At least DSB had clear the air in regards to saving by child. My only hope is that it could be extended to all form of coins saving by the child in regardless of whether the "Piggy Bank" is issued by POSB or not. As well the coins is creditted into the POSBkids account, the coin-deposit levy should be waived.

My sis has a small shop with quite a number of foreign workers near her location. She is thinking of installing a coin telephone at her shop so that the workers without a HP could still make a call. She is looking at the typical orange color public phone used in coffee shops or provision shop. What is the procedure and how much would such a phone cost? Thanks for your inputs.

I believe this could had been posted here before but anyway no harm done for knowing Very prominent now in Singapore. So beware when receiving your change. Take a good look at the two coins - the one on the left is a one-dollar coin, the one on the right is 100 rupiah. Saw this report from STOMP :- "Someone ended up shortchanged - when a drinks stallholder gave her an Indonesian rupiah instead of a Singaporeone-dollar coin. Someone bought drinks at the foodcourt. Our drinks cost $1.40 and so she gave the stall owner $5. The drink stall gave a change of a $2 note, a $1 coin and $0.60, and she just kept it in her wallet without looking After she left the mall, she realised that the $1 that was given to her was in fact a indonesian Rupiah 100 (equivalent to only S$0.016)! After comparison to our S$1, we realised that both look similar. Just want others to beware and take note when people give you coins"

The BP station in Jurong East has a coin-op vac. Good news: The vac is the longest lasting coin-op vacs I have come across. 10min I think. Bad news: Suction nozzle is huge so you cannot use it to reach into crevices. Need to go to the counter to exchange for tokens (like coin-op arcade). $1 per token.
