This one is really Heng Ong Huat for the electrician, but Kan Suay for Andy. https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapore-seen/electrician-charges-3590-to-fix-circuit-breaker-on-first-day-of-cny-at-midnight-is Question is, would you pay if it was you? Or would you rather wait a week until most of them start work?

Doing reunion dinner first time for my immediate family. So seeing if got any fresh ideas for hotpot ingredients/sauces etc. No beef as my mum don't take. Cut chilli + soya sauce standard. Anyone tried the iberico pork belly/collar before? Does it really taste better than the generic ones. Bought canadian scallop and hokkaido scallop already. Abalone, Snow crab, Ang Kar prawns pretty standard. I'm working until 4pm, so lot of my prep has to be done beforehand and frozen. Going to make my own chicken base soup.

Let talk about Bak Kwa here. The previous threads are all few years old liao. My wife's staff managed to help us to get quite a few boxes this year, after queuing up for slightly over half a day. Their pineapple bak kwa is really 肉干皇 can get quite tough if not eaten fresh, but their marinate is better than 美真香 imo. Never tried 五香 bak kwa before.

I would have thought it is a April's Fool joke if posted 2 months later. Distasteful. [thumbsdown] KFC Thailand draws backlash over fried chicken incense sticks for Lunar New Year source: https://nextshark.com/kfc-thailand-fried-chicken-incense-sticks Last week, KFC Thailand reportedly shared a video about the product on Instagram. The incense sticks, which come in a box of 11, have been designed to look and smell like fried chicken thanks to a combination of scents from 11 herbs and spices, Marketing Oops reported. Following several outraged Instagram users’ reactions to the product, KFC Thailand reportedly took down the video from the social media platform on Saturday morning. However, the video is still up on Facebook. Several of them pointed out that the product is inappropriate given the millennia-old tradition of burning incense sticks in Asia. The practice is meant to commemorate various events, such as special occasions and funerals. People also burn incense sticks during their daily prayers and while they pay their respects to their ancestors.

https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/could-cancellation-chinese-new-year-bazaar-chinatown-have-been-avoided The author of this article is asking the obvious question. U can still get your cny goodies without goin to the bazaar n i think its absolutely sensible to cancel the bazaar becuz theres no way to prevent overcrowding u can manage/regulate the number of people goin to the bazaar but there will be a long string of queue n thats still overcrowding geylang serai bazaar/christmas bazaars all cancelled so i dun see why we chinese would feel that we are entitled to have our cny bazaar in the middle of a pandemic where covid-19 is still raging around the world and even our closest neighbours i am appreciate that living in Singapore almost feel like living in a bubble enough of my lor soh..... where is everyone getting your cny goodies from? i usually get from Gin Thye this year wife also ordering pineapple tarts from home bakeries some misc stuff we intend to get from ntuc or sheng siong early to avoid overcrowding closer to cny

'Lucky' stall at Chinatown bazaar goes for $13,899 – highest in six years This is highest in 6 years; stallholders believe the stall is 'lucky' as it is a hotspot for visitors at the Chinatown market A stall at the Chinese New Year festive bazaar in Chinatown next year went for a whopping $13,899 in rental. This is the highest bid in six years. The bid was for the "lucky" stall in the Chinatown Chinese New Year festive street bazaar, which will be held from Jan 18 to Feb 4 next year. Stallholders said the location of the stall at the junction of Smith Street and Trengganu Street is a hotspot for visitors at the market, and thus can bring in the most money. There were three bidders for the "lucky" stall at the 2019 bazaar, and the lowest bid was $2,700. The minimum bid for a stall at the bazaar this year was $1,850. The lucky owner of the stall is Mr Ye Wei Qiang, who has been setting up his stall at the festive bazaar for close to 30 years. He was also the owner of the "lucky" stall this year, which he won with a $8,399 bid. Mr Ye, 55, told The New Paper yesterday: "This year, I decided to up my stakes by $5,500. But I did it without hesitation because I got wind that my competitor had recovered from his sickness and would be bidding this year." He said that he and his rival has been at odds for close to 10 years, and would fight over the "lucky" stall every year. He had lost out to his competitor in the 2017 bazaar. At the bazaar next year, Mr Ye said he will be selling mostly pomelos at his "lucky" stall. His pomelos can range from $6 for a regular pomelo to $12 for a large one. Mr Ye said he will be also renting the stall across the "lucky" stall for about $5,000. This brings the number of stalls he will have at the bazaar to five, managed by him and four other business partners, and bringing his total rental expenditure to at least 20,000. "I rent the space opposite the lucky stall as a backup plan. There were some years I couldn't get the lucky stall, but at least I had the one opposite. "It is very important to get the space near the lucky stall because there is a lot of traffic around that area," he said. Mr Ye will be selling Chinese sausages and other snacks at the opposite stall. Despite the high rent, Mr Ye is confident that he will be able to make a profit. "I make a profit every year, and I have a few other stalls around the bazaar as well. "It is expected that the profit will dip slightly due to the high rent, but we have regular customers, and business is so good at that location. We can sell baskets at one go," he said. Mr Ye added that he sees about $5,000 to $6,000 in profit every year. On regular days, Mr Ye is a durian seller at Katong. The Festive Street Bazaar 2019 is managed by the Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019 Organising Committee, a sub-committee under the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens' Consultative Committee. There will be 313 stalls filling the streets, selling all sorts of food and decorations for the Chinese New Year celebrations. The market will be open from 6pm to 10.30pm from Jan 18 to Feb 3, and from 6pm to 1am on Feb 4, the eve of Chinese New Year. https://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore/stall-chinatown-bazaar-goes-13899-highest-six-years huat ah !

Singaporeans cancel CNY shopping trips to Malaysia as disputes drag onSingaporean-organised “shopping tours” into Johor ahead of the Chinese New Year are seeing last-minute cancellations as relations between the two countries tense up over a maritime and airspace dispute, reported Sin Chew daily. Community groups in the city state often run annual Chinese New Year shopping trips for Singaporeans to enjoy the cheaper prices across the border and stock up on festive goodies. However, many such shopping trips have recently been cancelled, according to the Chinese-language newspaper. Ms Liao Liyun, chairman of the Sengkang Rivervale Residents’ Committee, said that the annual one-day trips to Johor Baru and Batu Pahat would usually be snapped up by eager shoppers. However, with the relationship between Singapore and Malaysia growing increasingly tense, the committee decided to call off the trip this year, citing security concerns by participants. Ms Liao said residents have been given a full refund, and locals have settled on buying Chinese New Year goods at local warehouses in Singapore. Others have decided to cancel their shopping trips in a move to boycott Malaysian retailers. Ms Li Meihua, a member of the Yishun Constituency, told Sin Chew that residents have decided not to cross the border as Malaysia’s behaviour was “not friendly and they do not want to go shopping there". Malaysia and Singapore are embroiled in a dispute over territorial waters and airspace. Earlier on Tuesday, Singaporean Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said security forces have been ordered to exercise restraint after Johor chief minister Osman Sapian visited a Malaysian vessel in the Republic’s territorial waters. Foreign ministers from both countries met last week in the republic for talks, which will be followed by a meeting between the respective countries’ transport ministers at the end of the month.
