  3. I really can't stand this kind of people. Even if they appear successful, I would heavily discount their success. Have known at least 3 separate elder relatives subject to this kind of cheating. Do you know any? Please share and advise against this behaviour. More seniors being cheated by their kids Social workers say it is important to raise awareness of financial abuse so that the elderly can learn how to safeguard their money.PHOTO: AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE Social workers say the financial abuse cases reported are just tip of the iceberg Theresa Tan Social workers are seeing more senior citizens who have been cheated or financially abused by their children. The children may have tricked or talked the parents into selling their home, often with the promise that the parents can live with the children in the children's home. But after taking the sale proceeds, they treat the parents shabbily, some even throwing the parents out. There are also cases where children hold a parent's ATM card or manage their finances, as the parent may be too frail to go to the bank or is unfamiliar with the banking system. But the parent's life savings get wiped out as the children help themselves to the money. Also common are situations of adult sons demanding money regularly from elderly parents and turning violent if they do not comply. Related Story Son sells aged father's three-room flat, takes money and leaves him destitute TRANS Safe Centre, a charity specialising in helping abused elderly people, dealt with 11 seniors who suffered some form of financial abuse last year. In 2008, it had only two such cases, its senior social worker Mrs Chua Yixin told The Sunday Times. Care Corner Project StART, another of the three agencies that specialise in helping those affected by family violence, estimates that it had about 20 such new cases last year, a "considerable" rise over the last few years, its team leader Kristine Lam said. HIDING THE SHAME The elderly may not even see this as abuse, but as their bad karma to have an unfilial child. They think it's shameful to tell others and they don't know what can be done about it MRS CHUA YIXIN, senior social worker at TRANS Safe Centre, on abused seniors choosing to keep mum about being exploited by their children Pave, another family violence specialist centre, does not track the number of seniors who have been financially abused, but said the issue is definitely of concern. This is because social workers say that the cases reported are but the tip of the iceberg. Parents not only fear they will get the children in trouble if they go to the police, but also worry that the children will cut off ties if they go public. And even when they seek assistance, it is often for financial aid or to find a place to stay for themselves or the abusive child. When doing so, they keep mum about how they have been exploited. Said Mrs Chua: "The elderly may not even see this as abuse, but as their bad karma to have an unfilial child. They think it's shameful to tell others and they don't know what can be done about it." Take for example the case cited by Project StART's Ms Lam of a widow in her 80s whose only child got her to sell her house worth $4 million. The son, a businessman in his 40s, asked his mother to sign a document, purportedly to rent out her house and give him the rental income to help him cope with business woes. As it turned out, the document was for the sale of the house. He later promised to buy her a small flat. But that did not happen, and she found herself living with his family of five in his two-room flat. The woman also said her daughter- in-law treated her badly. But she put up with it, as her son told her he would cut off ties and not attend her funeral if she went against his wishes, Ms Lam said. Social workers say the financial abuse cuts across all income groups. Mrs Chua gives the example of a widow in her 80s who receives $450 a month from the Government's Public Assistance (PA) scheme for the destitute. She is bedridden and lives with the youngest of her six children, a son in his 50s. The jobless man used his mother's PA money for himself, leaving her malnourished, among other problems. He even took his mother out to the streets to beg, his siblings told Mrs Chua. But when they questioned their brother or tried to visit the old woman, he threatened to kill himself and found ways to stop them from visiting her. With the social workers' help, however, the other children eventually managed to have her placed in a nursing home. Mrs Chua said many such abuse cases come to light only when the other children smell a rat. For instance, when the parents are not properly looked after, or when the child who is suspected of cheating the parent prevents siblings from having any contact with the parent. One man even went so far as to take his mother to a lawyer's office to sign a statutory declaration - a statement made under oath - that she did not want any contact with her four other children. She also signed a letter authorising the son, a professional in his 40s, to handle her finances - her worth is estimated to be in the millions. The son has prevented his siblings from visiting. He refuses to open the door when they show up, and they have not seen their mother, who is in her 80s and uses a wheelchair, for over a year. The woman's other children suspect that he has got her to make him the sole beneficiary in her will, Mrs Chua said. They are now exploring their options to gain access to their mother, she added. Many cases of financial abuse involve a son abusing his mother. Said Mrs Chua: "Mothers tend to give in to their children's demands more often than dads. Traditionally, mothers dote on their sons more, so some take advantage of this." Associate Professor Ruby Lee of the National University of Singapore Law Faculty said financial abuse is a tough nut to crack as most seniors do not want to report the wrongdoing or take their children to court. Making a police report may not help, because the children's actions, while morally wrong, may not be a criminal offence, she said, citing the example of children reneging on their promise to house their parents after taking the proceeds from selling the parents' flat. But if a parent has lost his mental capacity due to dementia, for example, and a child is suspected of cheating the parent, the siblings can ask the court to appoint them as deputies to make key decisions on the parent's behalf. For a start, social workers say it is important to raise awareness of financial abuse so that the elderly can learn how to safeguard their money. Ms Micki Sim, a social worker at @27 Family Service Centre, suggested: "Talk to someone, like a social worker, if you feel you have been exploited and we will see how we can help."
  4. Folks, recently my car had a loud screeching sound at the engine compartment. Looking into the engine bay I realize that the sound will be heard when the compressor kicks in. I went to Mark Cool to get an opinion. A mechanic attended to me and said that my compressor rotating disc is loose and caused the sound. As Mark Cool is a recommended workshop , I agree with him to change to a recon compressor costing $350. However, the sound did not go away. Upon asking the mechanic, he said it is due to a faulty camshaft pulley. My gripe is this. He now know that the actual problem is the camshaft pulley and not the compressor. Should not he refund me the repair cost as I am being charged for repairs that do not solve the problem. Please advice.

  7. Hi all, Just wanted to know everyone's views on the new lemon law and how it affects the 2nd hand car market. I am planning to buy my first car and postponed it till the lemon law was passed on 1st September. Has anyone experienced any price increase because of this? Has anyone made any complains or claims against dealers yet? Please share your views. Cheers!
  8. http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNew...102-308384.html Two Singaporean men who are participating in the 80th Interpol General Assembly in Hanoi were cheated by a local taxi driver. The taxi driver charged them 40 times the normal fee and even stole their cell phone. According to victims Chen Ang Dani and Than Sha Pen, the driver forced them to pay VND6 million (S$362.85) for a 10km ride which should have cost only VND150,000. The victims told police that the incident occurred on October 28 when they took a taxi. The taxi allegedly has a license plate number of BKS 30K-6476 and purportedly belongs to Phu Gia Group, according to VnExpress newswire. They were driven from Phan Boi Chau Street to Hanoi's National Conference Centre and eventually had to pay US$200 (S$253.74) and S$100. The men said that after arguing with the driver over the prices, they left behind an iPhone 4 which could not be found. Hanoi police yesterday announced that they have identified the taxi driver and are hunting for him. The 80th Interpol General Assembly started in Hanoi on October 31 and is expected to end on November 3. For more stories, please visit www.tuoitrenews.vn. INterpol leh. wahahaha

  11. 1. Booked my car in Jan 2010 during Borneo Motor CNY sale under the classic non gaurantee COE package 2. Price was heavily discounted by $6K as part of the CNY special 3. At the point of booking, I was told by the SE, the promotion has been very successful and all the cars were sold out. New shipment will take 3 months to arrive, I accepted it. 4. At the point of booking, Was advised by SE don't need to waste $1000 more on gauranteed COE package. Borneo has never fail to secure COE 5. Since Jan to Mar there have been 6 biddings, 2 biddings per month, Borneo Motors have NEVER attempt to submit a bid for any of the past 5 bidding exercises 6. Each time I call the SE to question them, why they didn't bid for me, the reason was Borneo is a large player and they must try to space out the COE bidding according to car shipment schedule otherwise COE will shoot up sky high. This is a strategy. SE said Borneo won't bid so early because my car is not here yet. 7. Subsequently SE said Borneo has the right to decide when to bid, whether to bid, what price to bid as per contract 8. They took my deposit and then did nothing to secure the COE for the past 5 biddings 9. Today 24 Mar, they put in a bid at $26K and was out bid. They did not make revision to the bid. 10. Prices have already gone up since the point of purchase in Jan 11. Past 5 biddings, COE was at around $20K they choose not to bid and waited until the final last bidding then s--t hit the fan. 12. What can I do? Complaint to CASE, which is probably useless anyway? My point is, had I not booked a car with them, I could have bought another car in Jan/Feb when prices were still lower compared to the present price. However they took my deposit, locked me into a 3mths or 6 bids contract and sat on it, I now ended up without a car and have to pay a higher price to purchase another car because prices have since moved upward SE said I'm not the only one. They've many customers in the same boat. Anyone out there in the same situation?

  13. Motorist jailed, fined for tempering fuel gauge A MAN was jailed for two weeks and fined $500 for tempering with the fuel gauge of his car to give a false reading. Abu Khalid Mohd Jadi, 52, pleaded guilty on Aug 5 to two charges - for not having the minimum amount of petrol in his vehicle's fuel tank when he was leaving Singapore on July 31, and for giving false information to the officer inspecting the fuel gauge of his vehicle. He was fined $500 on the first charge, or one week's jail in default, and jailed for two weeks on the second count. At the Woodlands Checkpoint on July 31 at about 10.45 am, Abu Khalid, when asked if he had three-quarter tank of fuel in his car, declared that his fuel tank was almost full. After a thorough check, the Immigration and Checkpoint Authority (ICA) officer found a remote control switch hanging from the wiper lever of his car. When asked, Abu Khalid claimed that the remote control was not working and he could not give any reason for its purpose. The ICA officer then activated the remote control and saw the fuel indicator dropped to 'E', indicating an empty fuel tank. Only then did Abu Khalid admit that the remote control was for the purpose of tampering his vehicle's fuel gauge reading. The case was then referred to the Singapore Customs. The car was inspected and it was confirmed that its fuel gauge had been tampered with. The amount of fuel in the fuel tank was less than one quarter full. Abu Khalid admitted that he was aware of the three-quarter tank rule and installed the fuel gauge tampering device in August last year for RM150. He was arrested and charged in court on July 31. In the last two years, three persons had been charged in court for tampering with their car fuel gauges. All three were convicted and were fined and jailed. http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_267193.html Latest casualty of own stoopidity
  14. Would like to share my unpleasant encounter with Imperial Zshine (formerly located at CSI building, kim chuan drive, near Hougang Ave 3 and another outlet at The Legends at fort canning hill). Last year July they came out with a promotion of $150 for 5 polishes and will valid for only 15 months. It was too good a deal to believe. However, having met the boss (named Jack) personally before, thought he's quite a nice chap and trust worthy hence I took up the package. In Oct 07, they close down the CSI building branch and they are only left with the one at Legends. Since early this year, I've been trying to book a slot for polishing but was always unsuccessful (he always claim they are fully booked). Its only recently that when I ask for further available dates, then he says fort canning under 'renovation'. I further probed when would the renovation be completed then he says they're closed! He then 'refer' me to his partner (named Robert) who runs mobile polishing services. He told me Imperial Zshine close down already and he has nothing to do with it. If I want his services, gotta pay. He even challenge me to go and make a police report. I know that $150 is not a lot of money, but felt that they are out to cheat people of their money (using the cheap package as a bait). Not sure if any of you out there are also cheated by this company. I will be lodging a police report in hope that they will get their appropriate punishment. Their contact numbers are as follows: Jack - 9109 872! Robert - 9106 917) If you're signing up any packages with any of these 2 guys, please beware. Don't fall into the same trap as me....
