Curry. When many of us think of Indian food, we naturally think of curry. Except, well, 'curry' isn't actually a thing. Not the word, and not even technically the food that we think of. Many of us probably think of curry as some sort of dish that has a gravy or sauce. But that is in fact a generalisation of a wide variety of Indian dishes, and also a decidedly Western invention intrinsically tied to India's Colonial past. 'Curry' as a word doesn't actually exist in the languages spoken in India, and the exact origins of the terms are not entirely clear (some trace it back to the Portuguese in the 16th century; the British subsequently used it to broadly describe a wide range of dishes without being able to grasp the various culinary nuances). Here a funny retort I found on one website: In India no one refers to dishes that have some gravy, as a curry. They'd call these dishes by their individual specific names like Malai Kofta, Matar Paneer, Dum Aloo, etc. Otherwise it'd be like calling ALL noodle dishes, "spaghetti" or walking into into a Japanese restaurant and assuming all fish is "sushi." I've never thought about this (I've never had to). But now that I have, it brings to mind my own experience with Peranakan food. I grew up eating plenty of Peranakan food, but I do realise that when I try to explain the cuisine to people who are unaware of it, it actually becomes very hard. I know the names (though often phonetically more than actually knowing the exact translation): buah keluak, rendang, sioh, babi ponteh. I know what they look and taste like, and I can cook most of them. But how do I explain them to people who do not know? And then I realise that I too default back to a Westernised norm - "it's a sort of stew", "it's like a curry". Despite its odd (and culturally loaded/problematic) origins, the word 'curry' has become a core part of most of our culinary vocabulary. That's not 'wrong', but it's also worth us acknowledging that food can be a great lens to explore diverse cultures, and realising that language, native or created, plays a big part in how we perceive things. Just some food for thought (GREAT PUN). ~ Des Images from Unsplash

Customer service recovery doesn't look good. I still remember the old days when I love to visit the old Rex theatre where I can choose from 3 curry puff stalls (OCK was one of them). http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/singaporesc...-234710682.html

More derangement caused by integration issues. Tension has grown in the recent months between some Silat Avenue residents and the tenants putting up at the HDB hostels there. On April 29, a tenant from the Back Packer Hostel, located on the ground floor of Block 149, Silat Avenue, said he was scalded by hot curry thrown down from a flat above. The Indian foreign student, Mr Sukhjinder Singh, 22, believes it happened because residents there are upset that the hostel tenants in the area have allegedly made the estate noisier, especially late into the night. Read the full report in The New Paper on Monday (June 18).

What's next? 咸鱼 or salted fish? From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...bal_chilli.html Posted on 25 Apr 2012 First neighbours argued over curry, now it's 'stinky' sambal chilli STOMPer Daniel came across a notice online, apparently posted at a void deck of a block of flats in Punggol. The anonymous note was addressed to neighbours who cooked 'stinky' sambal chilli. The STOMPer also referenced a separate dispute over curry. Said the STOMPer, who came across the photo on facebook posted this morning (Apr 25): "First, it was curry. Now, sambal chilli. "Saw this notice at a void deck of an HDB block at Punggol. "First, there was a conflict between neighbours about the smell of curry, now it's the smell of sambal chilli. "Wonder what happens to our society's tolerance level and wonder whether the family who cooks the sambal chilli would be advised to ensure that their neighbour is not around before they can cook sambal chilli, if this matter is brought for mediation." In August last year, Singaporeans organised a 'Cook A Pot of Curry' event online in response to the outcome of a mediation action when a mainland Chinese family asked a local Indian family to stop cooking curry as they did not like the smell. That separate incident happened over seven years ago, and Minister for Law and Foreign Affairs K. Shanmugam applauded the solidarity of Singaporeans but cautioned them not to be xenophobic. It is not known if the Punggol residents involved in the dispute are local or foreign.

We have been living harmoniously with our Malay and Indian brothers and sisters over the past 40yrs. I say we send this family back to PRC if they cannot integrate with our food and culture.. <_<

When neighbours disagree ... by Quek Sue Wen Carolyn Case 1: A family, who had just moved here from China, had resorted to mediation because they could not stand the smell of curry that their Singaporean Indian neighbours would often cook. The Indian family, who were mindful of their neighbour's aversion, had already taken to closing their doors and windows whenever they cooked the dish, but this was not enough. "They said: 'Can you please do something? Can you don't cook curry? Can you don't eat curry?'," said Madam Marcellina Giam, a Community Mediation Centre mediator. But the Indian family stood firm. In the end, Mdm Giam got the Indian family to agree to cook curry only when the Chinese family was not home. In return, they wanted their Chinese neighbours to at least give their dish a try. Link
