  3. https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapore-seen/woman-stranded-after-jb-workshop-loses-her-car-keys-i-will-not-go-to-malaysia-for A routine car maintenance trip across the Causeway turned into a frustrating ordeal for a Singaporean woman who claims a Johor Bahru workshop lost her car keys, leaving her stranded and almost $300 out of pocket. 31-year-old bank officer, Ms Cai, recounted her experience to Shin Min Daily News, detailing how a simple oil change and air-conditioning check turned into a logistical nightmare. On Dec 29, 2024, she took her car to NK Car Care in Bukit Indah, Johor Bahru. “The workshop was very busy,” Ms Cai explained. “Around 3pm, a staff member asked me to park my car at the car wash next door and hand over the keys. I gave the keys to the workshop owner's brother. He said he would collect the car in about five minutes.” Hours passed with no word. It wasn’t until 6pm that Ms Cai received a distressing call: the workshop had lost her car keys. They assured her they were searching, but by 9pm, closing time, the keys were still missing and her car untouched. “When I arrived, the workshop owner said it was Sunday and the locksmith wasn’t available until the next day,” she said. Determined to resolve the issue, Ms Cai took matters into her own hands, locating a locksmith herself. However, due to differences in the car’s security system between Singapore and Malaysia, the locksmith could only unlock the doors, not start the engine. Hoping to have her authorised dealer in Singapore reprogram a new key, Ms Cai requested the workshop tow her car back across the border. The workshop refused, insisting she return to Singapore to retrieve her spare key for them to duplicate. This suggestion was met with immediate resistance. “If someone finds the lost key, they could steal my car," Ms Cai argued. "If my car goes missing in Malaysia, who will be responsible?” Ms Cai, who said she had previously patronised the workshop three or four times without incident, expressed her disappointment at their lack of accountability. Ultimately, Ms Cai paid RM900 (approximately S$271) to have her car towed back to Singapore. Reflecting on the costly and time-consuming ordeal, she declared: “I will not go to Malaysia for car repairs anymore. This experience was really troublesome. I don't want to lose more because of a small issue.”

  9. After I installed my car alarm and in-car camera, I have been experiencing battery drain... basically from time to time if I do not drive the car for a few days, my battery may end up being fully discharged. This has happened a few times in the last few months already. Initially, I thought it was a battery issue but after having it checked at autobacs and also with a battery test device that I bought, I found the battery to still be working fine. I also thought it was because I seldom drive but recently I have been driving alot more and the situation still remains. I am now suspecting that the mechanic who connected the equipment to my car did not do a good job and had resulted in something being shorted inside thereby causing the drain. Is there any recommended workshop who is good with these things and can check out the connections done to my car, maybe with a multimeter to figure out if something is draining my battery away unnecessarily?
  10. Xiaomi coming soon, no joke. Xiaomi to invest $10bn in electric vehicle race Chinese phone maker Xiaomi is wading into electric vehicles with a $10bn (£7.3bn) investment over ten years. The company will be entering a fiercely competitive electric car market that also includes rivals Apple and Huawei. Xiaomi will set up a wholly-owned subsidiary with an initial investment of about $1.5bn, with the company's chief executive Lei Jun heading up the new venture. "The decision was made after numerous rounds of deliberation among all our partners, and this will be the final major entrepreneurial project of my life," he said in a statement. So far, the company has given no indication about whether it will produce budget models or target the top end of the market. There are already hundreds of companies in China jostling for a share of the world's leading market for electric cars. Xiaomi founder Lei Jun says his company’s first electric car will be an SUV or a sedan, priced between US$15,000 to US$45,000 Xiaomi’s first vehicle will be either a sedan or an SUV costing between 100,000 yuan and 300,000 yuan (US$15,300 to US$45,900), said the Chinese smartphone giant’s co-founder and CEO Lei Jun on Tuesday, shedding light on the new Tesla challenger’s multibillion-dollar venture into electric vehicles (EV). Lei revealed the details during a live-streamed video session on Douyin, the Chinese sibling app of TikTok, to promote Xiaomi products, which came a week after he announced the company’s foray into smart cars. “The first car will definitely not be a sports car or a motorhome; it’d be either a sedan or an SUV,” Lei said, adding that the plans are still at an early stage and the details are still being worked out.

  15. Hi! I'm shopping around for a pre-owned car to replace my wife's current aging ride. I came across a few dealers who posted on sgcarmart claiming that the cars they are advertising are on consignment. I'm curious: 1) How do I know that the car is really on consignment? Or could it be a "consignment car" is easier for them to sell at higher profit since it lowers the buyer's guard against 2nd hand car dealers and reduce the tendency to bargain too aggressively. 2) If it is really a consignment car, do I need to pay admin fee to the dealer on my side? I was quoted a $700 fee if taking a loan with them and $1000 if paying full cash. Is this the usual for consignment? 3) Is the consignment dealer taking money from both sides ie.buyer and seller all pay a fee to him? I thought usually the seller already need to pay roughly 1% of the sales as commission for the consignment deal. 4) Can I get the seller to absorb these "admin fees" since I want to use my own financier who can handle all paperwork without additional cost to me. Thanks in advance!
  16. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/import-cars-jail-tax-gst-duty-evasion-fined-4064701 Low Han Siang, the sole proprietor of car importer M’ Exclusive, will serve 69 months' jail in total. SINGAPORE: A man was fined S$6 million (US$4.4 million) last Friday (Jan 19) for evading duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) on 1,828 motor cars imported into Singapore. As he failed to pay the fine, Low Han Siang, the sole proprietor of car importer M’ Exclusive, will serve a jail term of 60 months in default. He was also sentenced to an additional nine months' jail for underpaying the Additional Registration Fee (ARF) during the registration of the vehicles. The ARF is a tax imposed when a vehicle is registered, calculated based on a percentage of the Open Market Value of the vehicle. Low, 46, had pleaded guilty to two charges under the Customs Act for evading over S$1.8 million in taxes and duties incurred from importing 1,141 motor vehicles, including brands like Mercedes, Porsche and Tesla, into Singapore between 2017 and 2021. The Singaporean also pleaded guilty to two amalgamated charges of giving incorrect information under the Road Traffic Act. Another two charges of fradulent evasion of GST, six charges of fradulent evasion of duty and GST, five charges of causing an incorrect declaration to be made and four amalgamated charges for giving incorrect information were taken into considering during sentencing. HOW LOW WAS CAUGHT An investigation into M’Exclusive was launched after the car importer was suspected of under-declaring the values of motor vehicles for assessment of duty and GST payable, Singapore Customs said in a press release on Monday. Investigations found that from April 2017 to June 2021, Low created false invoices or asked his suppliers to issue multiple invoices with partial values to conceal the actual values of the imported cars. These invoices were then submitted to Singapore Customs for assessment of duty and GST payable. The suppression of the values of the 1,828 motor cars imported into Singapore between April 2017 and June 2021 resulted in the short payment of duty and GST amounting to about S$3,263,280. It was also discovered that Low had instructed his employee, Lee Pak How, to falsify invoices with suppressed values determined by Low. Lee, a 33-year-old Singapore permanent resident, was fined S$10,000 on Jan 13 after pleading guilty to one charge of falsification of documents. DECLARED VALUES OF IMPORTED MOTOR CARS Singapore Customs said it “closely monitors" the declared values of motor cars imported into Singapore and "will not hesitate to take enforcement actions on errant traders”. The agency added it maintains a "robust commitment" to combat fraudulent evasion of duty and GST, and will take the necessary actions against individuals and entities engaging in such illicit activities. Singapore Customs noted that in January, five individuals involving three separate cases were charged for fraudulent evasion of duty and GST by suppressing the declared values of imported motor cars, making incorrect declaration or causing incorrect declaration to be made on the values of motor vehicles, and falsification of documents. Court proceedings are ongoing for these cases. “Any person who is concerned in fraudulent evasion of any duty or GST on imported goods shall be liable on conviction to a fine of up to 20 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and/or jailed for up to two years,” Singapore Customs said. Any person who is concerned in fraudulent evasion of any duty or GST on imported goods can face a maximum fine of up to 20 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and jailed for up to two years. Any person who gives incorrect information in relation to any matter affecting the amount of tax chargeable shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding S$10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months. "The court shall also order the offender to pay up the ARF which has been undercharged to the LTA," Singapore Customs said.
  17. I am starting this thread to do my part in boosting the traffic / readership / participationship in MCF. I started the same topic during my time with AsiaOne Motoring Forum, and this used to be one of the hottest thread over there. All the old birds from A1M Forum (@fitvip, @presea, @hotnyh, @sabian, @7007, @ahyoo2002, etc.), let do our part to keep MCF active so that this forum would not face the same fate as A1M. For a start, let have something easy. All these 3 model were available in Singapore some 15 - 20 years ago. Happy guessing... #1 #2 #3
