Do remember to check the medication your elderly at home are consuming. They are the most vulnerable groups. HSA recalls 3 brands of high blood pressure drugs over potentially harmful impurity SINGAPORE: Three brands of high blood pressure medicine containing the ingredient losartan have been recalled because they contain higher than acceptable levels of a potentially harmful impurity, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said on Thursday (Mar 28). The drugs contain the active ingredient losartan potassium, which was manufactured by Indian pharmaceutical company Hetero Labs. The affected products are the 50mg and 100mg tablets from the brands Losartas, Losagen and Hyperten and distributed by local suppliers Apotheca Marketing, Medicell Pharmaceutical and Goldplus Universal, respectively. About 137,000 patients in Singapore are using the three recalled brands of losartan medicine, said the Ministry of Health (MOH). Losartas is prescribed in public healthcare institutions, while Losartas, Losagen and Hyperten are prescribed at private healthcare institutions. HSA has advised patients not to stop treatment on their own as there is no immediate health risk and sudden stopping of the drugs can pose greater immediate risk to their health. The recalled products were found to contain trace amounts of a nitrosamine impurity, N-nitro-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid (NMBA), which are above internationally accepted levels, HSA said. Exposure to nitrosamines at high quantities over a long-term period may potentially increase the risk of cancer. For example, the added cancer risk from an additional six-month exposure is estimated to be less than 0.0002 per cent. “The risks of trace amounts of NMBA are associated with long term exposure. Sudden stopping of the medicines can pose greater and more immediate risk to patient’s health … We have advised healthcare professionals to review the medicine and treatment plans of their patients,” HSA said. HSA said that several losartan medicines have been recalled overseas since end-February due to the presence of NMBA. It tested all locally marketed losartan products for the presence of the NMBA impurity and in March found the three brands contained trace amounts of NMBA above acceptable levels. The other seven brands of losartan medicines marketed in Singapore are NOT affected by this impurity.

Blood Donors Urgently Needed In S’pore As All Types Of Stocks In The Blood Bank Run Low source: https://mustsharenews.com/singapore-blood-stocks/ 3,000 Blood Donors Needed In The Next 3 Weeks To Maintain Stocks Blood donation can change the lives of those in precarious health situations, and there’s no time like the present to help. The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) of Singapore announced today (11 Dec) that the national blood bank is running low on all blood types. They only have three weeks to replenish the stocks, to ensure that there’s enough blood for transfusions and medical emergencies. Stocks for blood group O only half of what’s needed HSA estimated the number of donors needed for each blood type to be as follows: A – 750 B- 750 O – 1,500 The large number of group O donors is due to the fact that stocks for that blood type is only at half capacity now. And since O is the universal donor, the blood type is especially crucial in emergencies where patients’ blood groups are unknown. On top of that, HSA says that almost half of all patients in Singapore have type O blood, and can therefore only receive the same type. Volunteer to donate blood Considering the urgency of the situation, HSA is appealing for healthy individuals to donate blood. You must fulfill the following criteria: Aged between 16 and 60 Weigh at least 45kg Have group O, A or B type blood Interested individuals who haven’t donated in the past 12 weeks can also donate, at any of the four blood banks in Singapore. Otherwise, you can also look out for community blood drives at various locations around Singapore at your convenience. Singaporeans have to remember to bring their NRIC, while non-Singaporeans have to bring their passports along. 16 and 17-year-old potential donors will need a parent to sign the consent form which you can find here. Help restore our national blood bank Blood is a vital source of life, and to lack backup sources of it for emergency situations or transfusions could be dangerous for those who are desperately in need. If you’re looking to end your 2019 on a good note, why not do that by donating blood and restoring our national blood bank? Who knows how many lives you can save through your small act of kindness.

I was diagnosed my blood has high platelet count five years ago and the condition has evolved to life-threatening level. High platelet makes the blood thick which can result in stroke or heart attack. My Bone marrow keeps producing excessive platelet. I have been on aspirin last five years for diluting the blood but there is no significant help. There is no medication can control bone marrow in platelet production (in reducing it). Normal platelet count is 150-450. My reading was 580 five years ago and risen to current 1001 last week. I have been seeing a Hematologist in SGH last five years, blood test on quarterly basis, one aspirin a day. i am told my condition is very rare. I am 53 y/o. my blood pressure and cholestrol level are normal. No diabetics. I know i have to look for alternatives and more opinions. i went to chong hwa toa payoh last night but there is no specialist there knows how to treat my condition. I was prescribed some medications and had 30-mins of acupuncture. i am looking for some real experience in treating high platelet count problem. my life is in danger. Please help to recommend / share anything you know including specialist / medication recommendation. I will be very grateful of it. THANK YOU.

SINGAPORE: You might have eaten it in Taiwan’s night markets, as blood sausages in the United Kingdom or even remember having it here in your pig's organ soup as a child - but this is not food for the faint-hearted. Just had a DVT after a 14 hr flight with a 2 hr stop over in the middle. Diagnosed 2 weeks after flight even though I'd been doing intense cardio work at the gym during those two weeks. I want to buy some pressure stockings to wear on next flight. But how to buy? You get a choice of how much pressure you need to exert on lower leg and foot and you can buy on shoe size. But apparently it is better to get proper fitting, calf circumference etc etc, to ensure they work properly and don't make things worse. Seems not much work done by specialists investigating DVT and how it is caused and how best to ensure no repeat. Anyone any experience?

Woman lost nearly 3 litres of blood after waterslide tore her uterus https://www.asiaone.com/world/woman-lost-nearly-3-litres-blood-after-waterslide-tore-her-uterus In a horrific case of a holiday gone wrong, Toni Steedman found herself bleeding heavily when a free-fall waterslide left her with her uterus ripped. While the incident took place back in 2017, Steedman is sharing her experience now in response to recent events that saw a British tourist break his neck on a similar ride. A mother of two, Steedman and her husband had brought their family to Tenerife, Spain to celebrate his birthday. They had planned to spend the day at Aqualand Waterpark, which is known for its array of waterslides, especially the Kamikaze - a 22m vertical descent that also happens to be the tallest waterslide in Europe. However, the slide was so steep and the velocity of the ride so great that water was forced into her body, resulting in a 7cm tear in her uterus. "The slide was really fast and when I hit the water at the bottom I felt something just burst inside me. When I stood up I felt as though I needed the toilet but as I moved blood started pouring from between my legs. It was making a trail as I walked from the pool," she recounted. Steedman was immediately brought to a hospital three minutes away, where the doctors quickly staunched the bleeding and gave her three blood transfusions. She was then sent to a bigger hospital further north where she underwent surgery to repair the tear. Due to the severity of the accident, Steedman wasn't able to leave the country for more than a week and was out of work for two months. She was also unable to claim insurance as she had not informed her insurance company that she would be going away. Steedman also stated that the lifeguards had neglected to tell her any of the safety precautions such as to cross her arms and legs, which would have prevented the accident from happening in the first place. In a viral video from July 8 this year, David Briffaut and his girlfriend can be seen sliding down head-first on mats at Aqualandia in Benidorm, Spain, but the moment they hit the water, his head can be seen snapping forward. It turned out that he had broken two vertebrae on the spot and had briefly lost consciousness. Despite the prompt medical attention, he continues to be on life support and medics have warned that he may be paralysed from the chest or waist down. Even though Steedman had been relatively lucky, has since recovered from her injury, and is still able to have children, Briffaut will require a lifelong caretaker. As the full extent of Briffaut's injuries remain unclear and he requires more surgeries, his family has since set up a crowdfunding page to help alleviate the costs of the procedures. The page has raised more than S$76,113 at the time of writing. Both waterparks have long been under fire, with unhappy holidaymakers leaving negative reviews on their page. In a statement, Aqualandia spokesman Maria Jose Marcos said, "We have video footage which plainly shows how the 23-year-old man did not follow the guidelines for Splash. Our lifeguard team informed him of the rules of the ride and he didn't obey them. So, Aqualandia cannot be held for the consequences of visitors failing to follow safety rules. Of course, Aqualandia helped him and his friends in every way and our insurance covered all the medical attention. Aqualandia has a long history - 34 years - and safety is our top priority." Just want to share my strange diet and herbs that I took to bring my BP down naturally. About 8 mths ago when I just turned 40, I went to the GP for some fever and when he checked my BP I was shocked to find out that it was damn high 155/90. He told me perhaps that I was sick that it got so high. He also advised me to consider taking BP pills. After recovering, I then consistently checked my BP and it hovered around 146/88 which was still high. Being overweight and with bad eating habits, I have decided to bring down my BP naturally by changing my diet and through herbal methods. I started exercising, ate modestly during dinner (no carbs after 7pm) and voila after 6 months I lost around 7kg. In addition, I take a combination of these daily: 1) Cod Liver Oil (Omega 3 type) 2) Strong Aged Garlic Pills 3) Hawthon Pills (In Chinese they can it San Zhar-Haw Flakes, the kind you eat as a kid, pink round flat candy) My Blood Pressure is now a modest 130/80! Just my 2cents worth of sharing Health is Wealth!

Kids nowadays. Eat happy meal also must fight. Check out the knife Three men were attacked by four others near Tampines West Community Club this morning (Mar 22) at 6.20am, who then fled the scene and left behind a bloody knife and a 200 metre-long trail of blood. According to a report in Shin Min Daily, the incident occurred at a fast food restaurant near the community club at Avenue 3, Street 81. A 64-year-old retiree said he saw around 10 men in their 20s outside the restaurant at 5am. An hour later, he saw three men lying in a pool of blood when cycling past Block 828. Two of them had blood on their upper bodies and both hands, while the third man, who was bleeding from his head and arms, suffered more serious injuries. Two men -- a 24-year-old and a 22-year-old -- were sent to Changi General Hospital for emergency treatment. An employee at a supermarket nearby said he saw four men running past him quickly at around 6.30am. They were tall, thin and looked to be in their 20s. "They looked like they were being chased. I even asked my friend why they were running so quickly. Only when I saw the blood left behind at the scene later then did I know that something had happened," he said. A 14-inch-long knife with a rope tied around it was left behind at the scene. In response to a query by STOMP, Police said: "Police received a call today at about 6.24am requesting for assistance at Tampines West Community Centre. "Upon Police arrival, two men were found injured at the said location. "They were conveyed to Changi General Hospital. "Police investigations are ongoing."

From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/premium/forum-...-blood-20130314 (NB: Not sure why the above link needed to be logged in & so the article cannot be accessed unless you are a subsriber) As such I will recall from my memory this incident which was published in the reader's column from zaobao a couple of days back. Remembered this case because it was quite a serious lapse. According to this disgruntled reader they had a horrible experience at a local hospital. IIRC their 84 year-old grandma was warded & needed a blood transfusion. When the nurse tried to perform the transfusion, one of the relatives who was a nurse or was trained in medical procedures was astonished that the blood to be given was of type O+ but their grandma's blood type was AB. She quickly told the nurse who was adamant that the blood type was the one prescribed by the doctor & insisted on performing the procedure. Angered, the relatives quickly summoned the nursing manager & the latter was nonchalant about the mistake. When pressed, the nursing manager was reported to say that she had already apologised what more the relatives wanted. Really jialat... [shakehead]

STOMPer Ynez shares her horrible experience with this Indonesian maid that apparently collected her menstrual blood in a tea-bag and used it to cook soup for the family. The STOMPer recounted: "I want to warn the public that this maid is very dangerous. "She collected her menstrual blood on facial cotton pads and secretly put them into a disposable tea bag to cook soup for our family! "We cannot let this evil person do this type of black magic to anyone anymore. "So please pass her picture around. She is from West Java, Bogor. "Of all the 5 pictures I have posted, the ones taken indoors are all taken at my grandma's place when she was 'alone' at home with my grandma. "Could she had taken the pictures herself? "I have also started a Facebook group about employers who have had domestic maids who did nasty and evil deeds to them, to warn the public and also to let the public know that the maids are not always the victims. "Many a time, the employers are also abused! "If you have stories of dangerous maids, please share with all by posting here." These are some comments on the Facebook group regarding this incident: "She is so...Yucks... "OMG...The maid is so evil... "You may want to search for groups in Indonesia and paste the same info there."

STOMPer birdsama saw a schoolboy cutting his finger with a penknife and writing the words 'I FAILED TODAY' on a concrete bench at a badminton court near Fajar MRT Station in Bukit Panjang. He said: "I took this picture at a badminton court near Fajar LRT Station. "I saw a teenage boy who seemed to be in upper secondary cutting his finger with a penknife and using his blood to write something on the concrete bench beside the badminton court. "I think this is quite stupid. Why would anyone waste their blood on this kind of stuff? "I took this picture when he went to some convenience store to buy some water to wash his blood away. "Are students today under that much emotional torture? "What's happening to our kids these days?"
