After a three-day trial, the court found that social media personality Vaune Phan had been defamed by Mr Mark Yeow on four occasions last year. He had posted three defamatory statements on Facebook and had sent a separate one to a WhatsApp chat group, according to court documents. Ms Phan was represented by lawyers Suresh Divyanathan and Cherisse Foo from Oon & Bazul LLP. Mr Yeow, the chief mechanic at a motorcycle workshop and the operations director at another, was represented by lawyers Luo Ling Ling and Sharifah Nabilah from Luo Ling Ling LLP. Among other things, he had insinuated that Ms Phan had lied during proceedings in the Small Claims Tribunal (SCT) over her dispute with another motorcycle workshop, Revology Bikes. The blogger had claimed that Revology damaged her motorcycle when it reinstalled a camera that it had previously fixed on the vehicle. In her SCT claim filed on Dec 21, 2018, she said there was a "sizeable gap" between the fairings and the body of the motorcycle after it was returned to her. Ms Phan published a Facebook post on Dec 30 that year, with a link documenting the incident with Revology. Court documents state that Mr Yeow published a series of comments on her post on Jan 5 last year. He called her a "cheapskate", "freeloader" and "poser", among other things, and also accused her of cyber bullying. In a Facebook post the next month, he questioned her integrity and her claim that Rexology had caused the gap between the fairings and the body of her motorcycle. He also tagged Ms Phan's past, present and potential sponsors, business partners and other motorcycle workshops in his post. Mr Yeow subsequently included a link to the post in a message to a WhatsApp chat group, in which he also used the words "cheating" and "karma" in March that year. In the same month, the SCT ordered Revology to pay the blogger $4,630 as compensation. Mr Yeow later received a letter from Ms Phan's then lawyers, Parwani Law LLC, demanding that he remove his Facebook post and his Jan 5 comments. But he commented about Ms Phan again in May last year, on a Facebook post by electronics company Samsung. The post was an advertisement for a new mobile phone and featured the blogger, who had been contracted to promote it. Addressing Samsung with another Facebook account, he said the company "should do some homework and fact finding before hiring an influencer" and that there were plenty of capable individuals "who can show you what dirt biking means". The advertisement was later removed, and Ms Phan's contract to promote the mobile phone was terminated. On Tuesday, District Judge Wong Peck rejected Mr Yeow's claim that the blogger's popularity was already waning prior to the remarks being made, finding that she had an extensive online social media presence and that her reputation had been lowered by the statements. The judge also said in her judgment that his remarks were not justified. Among other things, she disagreed with his explanation that Ms Phan's behaviour had caused loss to Revology's business and was therefore "cyber bullying". "As the SCT ruling stands and Revology has paid compensation to the plaintiff pursuant to such ruling, I disagree how such facts when made public can constitute cyber bullying," the judge added. Noting Mr Yeow's attempts to prove that the blogger had lied during the SCT proceedings, she said: "My view is that it is not open to this court to examine the SCT decision and findings of fact." The district judge also ordered Mr Yeow to pay legal costs to Ms Phan, as well as to take down his Facebook statements and refrain from making similar defamatory remarks against her again. But the judge did not allow Ms Phan's claim for damages of $6,404 for the termination of her contract with Samsung, ruling that the blogger had not proven the termination was due to Mr Yeow's statements. Thanking her lawyers in a statement to The Straits Times, Ms Phan said she was not suing for personal gain but to protect her reputation and the clients she works with. "After recovery of my full legal costs, I will donate the remainder of the damages... to charity," she said. Mr Yeow told ST that he intends to appeal against the decision.

A man on a motorbike was being chased by traffic police along Geylang road. He slid off his bike across the road and hit a traffic light, before picking himself up to continue evading the authorities on foot. An officer got off his bike to pursue the man, and was successful in apprehending him. It is unclear what were the circumstances that led to the chase. The suspect was detained in Lorong 24 Geylang for possession of an offensive weapon and traffic-related offences. He was also taken to hospital, and further police investigations are ongoing. According to the original Facebook post, an eyewitness told Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News that he saw the motorcyclist travelling at high speed and the police giving chase. The motorcyclist then abandoned his vehicle, ran away and tried to hide, but was unable to evade arrest, the witness added. Interestingly enough, there was also a second officer involved in the pursuit, except once the chase went on foot, he just stayed on his bike and seemed to wait for his partner to nab the biker. I don't even know which is worse - the fact that the cyclist caused the collision or that he didn't check on the rider after the crash. In a video posted on Facebook just yesterday (29 March), an accident along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 shocks several netizens. In the video, the cam car driver merges towards the middle lane in the darkness of the morning hours. Despite it being a little after 6 in the morning, the dark roads were illuminated by streetlights and the cam car's headlights. Just up ahead, a cyclist on the outermost lane notices the cam car's presence and starts switching lanes. With his bicycle dancing between lanes, it became clear that the cyclist had recklessly switched lanes without checking. At this moment, a motorcycle travelling in the same lane came into view. Due to the cyclist's sudden lane change, the rider did not have enough time to react accordingly, resulting in a rather nasty collision. The impact threw the cyclist off his bicycle while the heavy motorcycle flew across the road. With his path blocked, the cam car slows down and stops beside the cyclist, who immediately stands up with his helmet and bag still intact and attached to his body. After dusting himself off, he gingerly walks to his mauled ride. While attempting to pick it up, the cyclist blocks the path of an oncoming white van. On the other hand, after being thrown off his own vehicle, the rider sits up as he surveys his surroundings. While it is not clear if there were any serious injuries, the rider remains seated for the rest of the video. Netizens' reactions The video shocked many netizens, most of whom could not believe that the cyclist did not check on the potentially injured rider after causing the reckless accident. A van has been injured in this accident due to a cyclist's silly carelessness. Jokes aside, this is quite an unfortunate incident whereby a cyclist smashed into the back of a Toyota Hiace van which was stationary along one of Old Airport Road's traffic junction. The accident happened in the wee hours of the morning, with the cyclist apparently beating a red light at the previous junction as traffic was light. With the need to go as fast possible, he likely chose keep his gaze low on the road to be as aerodynamic as possible without realising that the van that he was about to crash into had actually stopped at the upcoming traffic junction. Thankfully, the cyclist survived but he sure looked quite messed up. We hope he recovers well! P.S. SG Road Vigilante's video thumbnail might be slightly disturbing for some. From the video, we thought the poor biker would be bulldozed by the truck but amazingly, the truck managed to avoid crashing into it! Seconds later, viewers can see a police car coming to a stop abruptly with its tyres screeching on the bottom of the video, suggesting to us that the white truck might have been running away from the cops. According to the comments on Complaint Singapore, the police were apparently trying to arrest the driver in the truck and this was a drug-related case. Maybe more should heed this netizen's comment whereby it is better to stop in front of a vehicle that has already come to a complete stop at the lights...

I was a rider before and had been very denfensive, so during my 5 years of riding history I stay safe, but now I know why every year got so many fatal bike accident and why a lot of drivers complain about reckless bikers, and i think most of them they deserved for it, no offence to those safe riders. Today 10pm rush back home from city cos some family matter, on SLE got one bloody stupid cl2b biker occupying lane one and was doing something around 80, so flashed him, don't care, on high beam and horn, also don't care; the worst thing is when lane 2 is clear for overtaking, he purposely speed up and don't even let me overtake from left, i was so pissed off and give him a finger when i finally get over him! Ofcos he finger me back la, this kind of ppl you know la....then when i exit he also exit, don't know if he purposely did that or what? And he follow me behind, and when i want to turn left, he suddently shot up and take the turn at very fast speed, lean on very low angle, seems like wanna show off in front of me, i ignored him. And I would like to say sth to this stupid F**King idiot: I hope You will fall and die one day very soon, and nobody shoud pity you, u die the earlier the better as our road less one reckless rider, and you will have no more chance to damage the image of all bikers so as to make them safer. The driver of of the red Ferrari, Mr Liu, said he had stopped at a traffic light at a road junction after exiting the PIE. From his rear mirror, he saw a motorcycle in the middle of two lanes approaching and it scratched the left side of his Ferrari. The 35-year-old businessman then rolled down his windows and told the female biker to stop by the side of the road after the junction, so that he could examine the damage on his car. She agreed. When the lights turned green, the female biker started to move off slowly. Mr Liu thought she would stop. However, not only did she not stop, the motorcyclist started to increase her speed. Mr Liu gave chase for about 2km, only to see the woman being flung off her bike -- which was sliding on the ground -- after losing control. Shocked, he got off his sports car to help her. Mr Liu checked for injuries, then called for an ambulance and the police. The biker was still conscious but was unable to speak. According to Mr Liu, there were multiple abrasions on her arms. Mr Liu said he does not plan the pursue the 5cm scratch on his Ferrari as the damage was not as serious as he had expected it to be. GALL

A delivery driver was fined $8,000 and banned from driving for three years on Wednesday for causing the death of a motorcyclist along an expressway. Lim Teck Thim, 53, admitted to making a lane switch from the extreme left to the second left lane of Ayer Rajah Expressway on Jan 7 last year without taking reasonable care, resulting in a collision with Mr Khoo Boon Ann's motorcycle. The 25-year-old was thrown off his machine and run over by a trailer. He died on the spot. Was traveling from suntec to Clementi, on Keppel highway there was a biker riding on lane 1, he was tailgating every car in front (average 90-105km/h), trying very hard to overtake car from the right, each time he just following closely but not taking chance. meanwhile, he was riding like casually with left 'palm' touching the handle (not grip!) , on some occasion, he even riding with one hand. All this carry on till Clementi ave 6 exit from keppel highway! The last daring act was he ride WITHOUT HAND !!! at 90km/h for a good 3-5 sec..... In case you want to know who that was, bike no. It is not known who wrote the message, as the pen ink used is different from the signature of the parking warden who issued it. Said the STOMPer (Sep 21): "Parking summons remark. "I am so angry with this remark. "Being issued summons already makes me fed up. "But someone wrote 'Serve you right' on the ticket. He then begged STOMPer Melvin, who was at the scene, not to call the police. Said the STOMPer: "This accident happened at a traffic junction along Upper Serangoon Road this afternoon. "A motorist was knocked down by a mini cargo truck and flung right behind me just right after I had crossed the road. "What a narrow escape! Being kind and nice, I went to help him up. "The motorist even begged us not to summoned the police as well as the ambulance even his left ankle was badly fractured just because he doesn't have a driving licence. "The lessons learnt from this particular accident is never drive without a licence. "If you want to drive then drive, be more cautious and careful." Police said in response to a STOMP query: "Police received a call at about 4.15pm today (Sept 5), informing us of a traffic accident involving a lorry and a motorcycle at the junction of Hougang Avenue 5 and Upper Serangoon Road. Mr Ang Chee Peng, 26, was doing what he loved most on Thursday night. He was riding along Upper East Coast Road when he was involved in an accident with a car. The driver of the car was making a U-turn towards East Coast Road to pick up his wife and daughter at a bus stop at the time, reported Shin Min Daily News. Mr Ang was flung from his sports motorbike and ended up pinned under the car. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received a call at 8.38pm and dispatched two fire engines, two fire bikes, an ambulance and two support vehicles to the scene. When the SCDF officers arrived, Mr Ang, who had serious injuries, no longer had a pulse, the report said. He was still trapped under the car when paramedics pronounced him dead around 9.30pm. Some 20 officers took about an hour to extract the body from under the car. They used two airbags and a hydraulic spreader to lift the car to gain access to the body. The driver of the car, who is in his early 50s, has been arrested for causing death by a rash act and is out on bail. Mr Ang's motorbike skidded 50m from the accident site. His sports shoes were found 100m away, reported Shin Min Daily News. One of the headlights of the car fell off and part of the car's body was damaged, the report said. If the driver is making the U-turn along East Coast Road and the biker coming straight from upper east coast road...... he should be charged for manslaughter... it is illegal to U-turn!
