The expectations of customers are changing very quickly, they will not come just for the (store's) layout," said Mr Claude.

me and wife after spending 5 happy holidays in taichung and da xi, ready to return to Singapore on evening 8.10pm flight with jetstar. however, I am now sitting at Taipei taoyuan airport now...... the story was I booked the return flight on 20 Jan instead of 21 Jan!! and I booked it 6 months ago, with hotels and itinerary planned for full 5 days. Yet I never thought of checking the ticket for past 6 months.... I have been a sotong in many occasions, booked movie ticket on wrong day (went to cinema then realised it was for next day), wrong cinema (went to plaza sing then have to rush to yishun!), purchased voucher online and expired before I realise, etc. but this will be in the record as the bestest screw up , I just wonder if my wife would divorce me when we return home

From home addresses and MyKad numbers to SIM card information, the private details of almost the entire population may have fallen into the wrong hands. Malaysia’s population is only around 32 million, but many have several mobile numbers. The list is also believed to include inactive numbers and temporary ones bought by visiting foreigners. With this leak, Malaysians may be vulnerable to social engineering attacks and in a worst-case scenario, phones may be cloned. It is also said that 81,309 records from the Malaysian Medical Council, Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) and Malaysian Dental Association were also leaked. The leak of the mobile data was reported earlier this month on online forum and news site lowyat.net, which reported that it was thought to originate from a massive data breach in 2014. Yesterday, the site “confirmed” that 46.2 million mobile numbers were leaked online. Lowyat.net founder Vijandren Ramadass told The Star that all information it received on the matter was handed over to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Asked what sort of action would be needed, he said: “Telcos need to admit that this breach actually happened and should inform all their customers what should be done.” It is believed that the MCMC and police are collaborating on the investigation. Network and security strategist Gavin Chow said the most common social engineering attack examples were phone and messaging scams. “Scammers pretend to be someone calling or texting from the telco since they can prove they have the target’s personal details,” said Chow, who is with cybersecurity and malware protection company Fortinet. He added that the scammers would then try to trick the victim in various ways. These include transferring funds into their accounts and installing “telco applications” containing malware or spyware, which will be used to exploit the target in future. “The devices would likely not be hacked directly, but anyone with the data dump information and a little creativity may convince unsuspecting victims to install malware on their devices. “Users need to be alert when receiving calls and messages from strangers. Do not get tricked into sharing more personal details, transferring funds or installing apps,” he said. Technology strategist Dinesh Nair said there was not much that consumers could do, but they should change their SIM card, for starters. “Your name, address, phone number, the IMSI (international mobile subscriber identity) and the IMEI (international Mobile Equipment Identity), which are tied to your device are all out there. “I’m sure my data is there as well. People with really good technical skills will be able to clone someone’s phone and that’s the worst-case scenario,” he said. Dinesh added that while no one knew where the breach occurred, the fact that the details were out there pointed to a leak of some sort. “How it happened, we can’t tell but with so much released from different telcos at the same time, it must come from a single source,” he added. Bar Council cyber law and information technology committee co-chairman Foong Cheng Leong said assuming that the leak was after the enforcement of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, there might have been a breach of the Act’s Security Principle by the data users. “The Security Principle requires data users to process personal data securely, but there is not much customers can do other than file a complaint with the Personal Data Protection Commissioner,” he said. Digi said in a statement that it prioritised the privacy of its customer data. “The authorities are looking into the matter and we’ll continue to support them,” the statement read. Celcom Axiata Bhd said it was “collaborating closely with the authorities to assist in the investigation”, a sentiment echoed by Maxis Bhd, which also said it “fully supports the investigation”. Representatives from U Mobile declined to speak about the leak, while representatives of TuneTalk could not be contacted for comments at press time. MMA president Dr Ravindran R. Naidu said a police report was lodged more than a week ago when news of the leak surfaced. “Of course, no system is unhackable. Even the US Department of Defence has been hacked. “However, we have been in the process of upgrading our IT system for the last year or so and the new servers will be more secure. “We will also be upgrading our operational security measures and introducing a new SOP for our staff to minimise the risk of a repeat of this episode,” he said. And they continue to represent the fastest growing group in tax free spending globally, according to the latest intelligence data by financial services company Global Blue. Chinese tourists are welcomed in stores around the world as they generate the biggest tax-free shopping sales globally. Last year, they chalked up more than S$3 billion in tax free shopping transactions. Chinese tourists also represented the highest growth in tax free spending globally year-to-date at 57 per cent, followed by Switzerland with 37 per cent and Taiwan with 34 per cent. Each Chinese shopper's tax-free average spend amounted to more than S$1,341 per person, which is much higher than their Japanese (S$877) and Russian (S$594) counterparts. Singapore also turned out to be their top destination for buying luxury watches and jewellery, with each spending an average of S$8,757 in Singapore, compared to S$7,221 in Italy and S$3,127 in Germany. But that's not all that China tourists spend on. Ravi Thakran, group president of South and Southeast Asia & Middle East at LVMH, said: "The largest business for us in Singapore is the duty free shoppers. We had a PRC customer buying a single bottle of a 62-year-old Dalmore st Claire for S$250,000. This is the highest price paid for a single bottle of whiskey anywhere in the world in a duty free environment. And I'm told that those guys wanted to have their glasses and drink it too. Despite the weak economic data and a possible move by the Chinese government to lower import taxes on luxury goods, experts say the spending power of the Chinese shopper remains resilient. Manelik Sfez, vice president of Global Marketing at Global Blue SA, said: "All brands will be able to handle a lower growth base of Chinese travelers because that is the problem today, it's growing so fast. There's so much more people every day to serve so if it were a bit lesser, that wouldn't be a problem. He added: "Their average spending is growing and if they remain at the same level, that would still be more than okay for most brands. I think the emotional drive of traveling abroad and the social positioning that it provides will remain extremely powerful." The Russians used to be the top global spenders but have since been outpaced by the Chinese and this trend is likely to continue, given the rapid population growth and rising affluence in China. Singaporeans are the region's top spenders for dining, according to a MasterCard survey of consumer dining habits across the Asia-Pacific region. The Republic overtook Japan to climb to top spot, with an average monthly dining spend of US$262 ($323). This is up nearly 25 per cent from US$212 in June 2011. Japanese and Chinese consumers follow closely behind with an average monthly dining spend of US$225 and US$203 respectively. The global survey was conducted with residents aged between 18 and 64. Organized crime now generated annual turnover of about 140 billion euros (S$231 billion) and profits of more than 100 billion euros, it added. "With 65 billion euros in liquidity, the Mafia is Italy's number one bank," said a statement from the group, which was set up in Palermo a decade ago to oppose extortion rackets against small business. Organized crime groups like the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, the Naples Camorra or the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta have long had a stranglehold on the Italian economy, generating profits equivalent to about 7 per cent of national output. Extortionate lending had become an increasingly sophisticated and lucrative source of income, alongside drug trafficking, arms smuggling, prostitution, gambling and racketeering, the report said. "The classic neighborhood or street loan shark is on the way out, giving way to organized loan-sharking that is well connected with professional circles and operates with the connivance of high-level professionals," the report said. It estimated about 200,000 businesses were tied to extortionate lenders and tens of thousands of jobs had been lost as a result. Extortion with a clean face Old style gangsters handing out cash in bars and pool halls had been replaced by apparently respectable bankers, lawyers or notaries, the report said. Small businesses, who have struggled to get hold of credit during the economic slowdown, may have been increasingly tempted to turn to the mafia, said the report. Typical victims of extortionate lending were middle-aged shopkeepers and small businessmen who would struggle to find a new job and who were ready to try anything to avoid bankruptcy, it added. "They are usually people in traditional retail sectors like food, greengrocers, clothes or shoe shops, florists or furniture shops. These are the categories which, more than any other, are paying the price of the (economic) crisis," it said. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and International Association of Public Transport (UITP) inked on Tuesday a memorandum of understanding to establish and develop the UITP Centre for Transport Excellence for the Asia Pacific region. UITP chose Singapore to anchor its training, research and knowledge activities for the region because Singapore "has demonstrated excellent public transport development with continued innovation...", LTA stated in a press release. To be housed in the LTA Academy on Hampshire Road, the centre is envisioned to be a one-stop land transport knowledge and research hub with a focus on public transport and sustainable mobility. It will also provide training and support to land transport administrations and practitioners in the region, said the agency. Hans Rat, secretary-general of UITP, a network of transport authorities, said, "Ever evolving societies, changing commuters' behaviors and escalating expectations make managing transportation in a city a 'work in progress' always." LTA chief executive Chew Hock Yong said that through collaboration with UITP, the statutory board "can acquire cutting edge knowledge, which helps to meet our vision to deliver a land transport system that meets the diverse needs of an inclusive society and one that provides for a liveable and vibrant global city." The signing of the MOU comes after Singapore's mass rapid transit network suffered three major train disruptions last week, including one breakdown that affected an estimated 127,000 people.

Here is my take of the biggest winners of this GE 1) SDP. This party is almost written off in the last election, but they managed to get almost 37% of winning percentage for this election. To me, that's remarkable with very credible candidates this time like Vincent, Tan, Col Ang, James Gomez, and others. It's an amazing comeback. I hope they continue to work on the ground and don't give up. 2) TodayOnline : Considering how strict our meda control are, it's amazing that they could upload every single rally into youtube for the analysis and study by everyone. The men and women behind this are truly the unsung heroes. I have no doubt that they played a big part in this GE is providing people a balance view. 3) Chiam S T : He did not win, but he has won the hearts of many. Looking frial, he still campaigned from rally to rally and walked from block to block. Amazing man who really wants to serve. 4) The people of Spore : You have made your voices heard, an opposition has won a GRC for the first time, and it sent the gov. back for some soul-searching. It's a good result. Not that bad till they can't form a majority, but good enough to reflect what went seriously wrong. 5) And perhaps TPL : Riding on the coattail of SM, she just ride into the Parliament. Nuff said.
