A woman aged 55 or older gave birth in March, making her one of Singapore's oldest mothers. The woman, whose exact age was not specified, gave birth to a boy and registered his birth in March, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) told The Sunday Times. This is only the second time a baby was born to a mother aged 55 or older since ICA started keeping birth records in 1989. In August 2016, a woman aged 55 or older gave birth to twin boys, according to ICA records. Dr Khoo Chong Kiat, who delivered the twins, said the woman was 58 when she gave birth. He added that the woman and her husband, who is four or five years older than her, had been trying for a baby for years. Dr Khoo does not remember their occupations. Dr Khoo, who runs CK Khoo Clinic for Women & Laparoscopy, said: "She was very determined to have a child. And she stretched social and medical norms. "Once you hit menopause, there's no need to think of babies anymore but she managed to conceive through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) using her own eggs even after menopause." Dr Khoo said his patient had previously appealed to the health authorities to be allowed to undergo IVF here to no avail. Last month, the Government announced the lifting of the age limit of 45 for women to undergo IVF treatments here and this will take effect from Jan 1. Dr Khoo's patient went to a fertility clinic in Johor Baru even though she had reached menopause at the age of 50. Through hormone replacement therapy and with the help of IVF drugs, her menstrual cycle started again and she managed to produce eggs. Her eggs were mixed with her husband's sperm in a lab and the resulting embryos were implanted in her womb. However, she developed pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterised by high blood pressure, and the twins had to be delivered by cesarean about three weeks premature. This was a very rare case, Dr Khoo said, adding that the boys are healthy. He cautioned that older mothers face significant health risks, from a higher risk of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes to having a child with a genetic disease. The woman believed to be the world's oldest mother is a 74-year-old Indian national who gave birth to twin girls earlier this month through IVF using donor eggs. Her 82-year-old husband collapsed from a heart attack shortly after the birth, while she remained in intensive care. While the Singaporean couple were elated to finally become parents, they hid the good news from relatives. Dr Khoo said: "She shared with me that she dared not tell her relatives she has given birth as she was afraid they would laugh at her or call her selfish for giving birth at such a late age." source: straits times premium article congrats to the lady.. with medical advancements these-days,never say never.but personal health comes first regardless.

The Minister has spoken - you don't need that much space! No explicit details or OT tiko directions please. This is about population, housing and nation building. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/ministers-rejoinder-to-no-flat-no-child-belief You do not need much space to have sex. That was the feisty rejoinder from Senior Minister of State Josephine Teo, who oversees the National Population and Talent Division, to a question on whether young people are not getting their flats early enough to have children. The suggestion was that this could be a chicken-and-egg problem. To qualify for the Parenthood Priority Scheme, which gives first- time married couples first dibs on getting a flat, they must be expecting or have a citizen child below 16. But to have a child, some say they need to have a flat first. With a straight face, Mrs Teo declared: "You need a very small space to have sex." In an interview on marriage and parenthood issues last week, the mother of three teenage children tackled issues ranging from infertility to why the Government should not be "too kaypoh" (Hokkien for busybody). She noted that the Singaporean love story has a different arc from that of countries in the West. "In our case, man meets woman, man falls in love with woman, man proposes to woman, they then plan the wedding and do the house," she said. "In France, in the UK, in the Nordic countries, man meets woman, tonight they can make a baby already. They love each other. Both of them partly have their own family, so it is a matter of living in yours or living in mine, and they also don't have to worry about marriage - that comes later," she added. So how about having a couple declare that they wish to have a child in two years and get the flat first? Measures being considered to coax couples to marry and have babies Housing •Reduce the wait for Build-To-Order Housing Board flats Childcare •Increase childcare spaces to two for every three children •Look for suitable spaces in buildings, such as underutilised carparks, that can be converted into childcare centres •Attract childcare teachers through better pay and career planning, and elevate their social status to that of school teachers Caring for babies at home •Match local nannies to those who need them •Train maids to look after babies At the workplace •Get employers to offer flexible work arrangements and promote work-life balance, with the Government taking the lead as an employer "What if they can't conceive? Take back the flat from them? How do you know they really tried to conceive? Can we check whether they use contraceptives? Cannot, right?" she replied, amused. Instead of having the Government poke its nose into the bedroom, Mrs Teo relied instead on persuasion. She urged women to have babies early as they would not know if they are fertile or not. "You never really know that you're not fertile until you try. Unfortunately, it is one of those things. There is no fertility indicator. As a woman you will know, if you have regular menstruation, okay, (there is a) likelihood. But maybe you have a major cyst and how would you know until you attempt to conceive, only to realise that you can't?" The search for love is also not something to be left to chance, she said. "When I meet young people and ask if they go and look for upgrading opportunities, they said 'yes'. I said, 'What about love? Do you go and look for love?' They said 'no'. I said, 'Why not?' They said, 'If it happens, it happens'.

For me, I have one kid. One thing that will REALLY help is 1) make all pre school government owned with high standards. No expensive private pre schools. Asian parents will ALWAYS want the BEST for their child. And if they cannot afford it for many kids, they just have one kid.

As reported in CNA : 44% of Singapore parents believe their babies have sleep problem By Greta Georges, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 02 October SINGAPORE: An international study has found that 44 per cent of Singapore parents believe their babies have a sleep problem, while in Caucasian countries, less than one quarter feel the same way. A study of over 1,000 local infants shows their average bedtime is at 9.38pm, compared to those in predominantly Caucasian countries, who sleep at 8.51pm. But Singapore babies are early risers - waking up at 6am, earlier than babies anywhere else. This means they get 40 minutes less sleep a day than their Caucasian counterparts, after factoring in daytime naps. Paediatrics professor from the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr Jodi Mindell, suggests three golden rules. She said, "We want parents to be putting their babies to bed early, we want them having a bedtime routine and we want them to help their babies fall asleep independently." And this means not rocking or nursing babies to sleep, even when they wake up at night, so they will learn to fall asleep on their own. Dr Mindell said, "We found that 3 out of 4 babies in Singapore are sleeping in their parents' room, though not all are sleeping in their parents' bed. Those babies who fall asleep independently, no matter in their parents' bed or a separate room, are going to sleep better at night." Dr Mindell is the leader of a global study by the Asia Pacific Paediatric Sleep Alliance and Johnson & Johnson. Sleep is a natural biological need and is especially important for babies in their formative first years, and babies may get cranky, irritable and accident prone if they do not get enough sleep. Establishing a bedtime routine goes a long way, say experts. Bathing, massaging or reading and cuddling can help babies stay 20 per cent longer in continuous sleep and help cut babies' night awakenings by half. Hmmm....... something to ponder about....... Our babies have sleep problems.......

Who's the one who started the "stop at 2" campaign in early 80s/90s? Our uncle Lee makes it sound very easy n encouraging. But he must have forgotten the costs of raising a kid. Even if govt give baby bonus, how long can you survive on such payouts? He also talked about inflation, ERP issues, raising prices... sigh... More income for them soon. Excuses a lot man.

Take a look at this! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/...-to-babies.html Germany plans to give vote to babies By Harry de Quetteville in Berlin Last Updated: 7:17AM BST 10/07/2008 Dozens of German politicians have tabled a new law to extend voting rights to babies, toddlers, children and teenagers. The bill, which has won the cross-party backing of some heavyweight German politicians, would wipe away decades of "exclusion" and "discrimination" against minors, according to its supporters. Currently the voting threshold in Germany is 18, with an exception in some states, where 16-year-olds are allowed to cast a ballot. But that does not go far enough for the new law's backers, who want to ensure voting rights from cradle to grave. If the bill gets adopted, babies will have the same powers to voice their opinion on government handling of macro-economic performance in a global downturn enjoyed by their parents. Toddlers will be able to take a stand on issues such as whether German armed forces should be deployed abroad. According to the head of the liberal Free Democratic Party
