The largest scale matchmaking session is coming up this Sat... General comments about these singles session, the "candidates" are very average people at best, and quite a handful of them can be very weird and desperate. So for those who are going (but won't admit it openly anyway), pls manage your expectations, you won't see snow whites or prince charmings here. Go with an open mind. Enjoy the read.... speed_dating.pdf

Expectations differ on dialogues Some appreciate being asked for views, others prefer to hear from VIP Students queueing to raise questions at the Pre-U Seminar last week. Ms Mah Yi Xin suggested that ministers might want to first answer the question, then seek students' views. -- ST PHOTO: ASHLEIGH SIM By Matthias Chew and Rachel Chang STUDENTS who have taken part in dialogues with ministers say they have mixed feelings about having questions lobbed back at them. When a minister responds to a question by asking what the student's view or solution is, reactions range from indignation to appreciation. This practice is now being debated online and offline, after junior college student Reuben Wang, 17, wrote an angry blog post criticising Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean for asking students at a pre-university seminar what their solutions were to the questions they posed him. Reuben apologised to Mr Teo and retracted his comments on Thursday. Yesterday, Minister of State for Trade and Industry Teo Ser Luck said when he and his colleagues ask students for their views, it is not a bid to 'pass the ball back'. Rather, it is because policymakers value their input, he said, adding: 'No solution is perfect. It is a learning and two-way process for both sides.' He said young people should not underestimate their own abilities to come up with solutions. Feedback from teenagers has prompted him to launch certain constituency programmes. But some undergraduates who had their questions posed back to them at other ministerial forums said it was disconcerting. During a dialogue last year, National University of Singapore (NUS) undergraduate Mah Yi Xin, 22, asked Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, then the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, if a $100 levy was enough to deter Singaporeans from gambling at casinos. She found it 'frustrating' that instead of answering the question, he asked her what she thought. 'When people go for these forums, they want to hear what the minister says, rather than what participants say,' said Ms Mah. Mr Muhammad Farouq Osman, 23, was stumped when Mr Lee Kuan Yew threw back a question about aid for low- and middle- income families during a university forum last year. The NUS undergraduate worries such exchanges 'intimidate' other dialogue participants, who may not subsequently come forward with questions for fear of being put on the spot. He said what students want is not a 'right' answer but rather a glimpse into how policymakers, who have access to a wealth of data and support from civil servants, view urgent issues in society. Still, others like Singapore Management University law undergraduate Lea Woon Yee believe they have gained from having questions posed back at them. She attended a Young PAP forum last year during which Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Chan Chun Sing asked participants not just to 'throw stones', but to 'offer better solutions'. The 22-year-old, who asked Mr Chan about youth involvement in the community, said that 'he was showing us that it's not such an easy problem' to solve. It was effective, she said, because it allowed her to appreciate the constraints ministers face in making policy. Jurong Junior College student Douglas Ong, 17, who attended the same pre-university seminar as Reuben, said students like him did not get a chance to speak to political leaders every day. 'We want to hear his opinions, rather than having to give our own. I see the point of getting us to think about our own views, but what we really want to hear is what he's going to do,' he said. Ms Mah suggested that ministers might want to first answer the question, then seek students' views. That way, students would not be 'unsettled' by the swift return and the gesture 'would show that he is genuinely interested in your view'.

ESPN Soccernet latest : Beach ball referee Jones drops into Championship Mike Jones, the referee who incorrectly awarded Darren Bent's goal for Sunderland against Liverpool on Saturday, will not officiate in the Premier League this weekend. FIFA's laws of the game state "the referee should stop, suspend or abandon the match because of outside interference of any kind'', meaning the goal should have been ruled out and the match re-started with a drop ball. Jones will take charge of the Championship game between Peterborough and Scunthorpe at London Road. Jones' mistake has been widely criticised by a number of his former colleagues with Jeff Winter, Dermot Gallagher and Graham Poll all stating their surprise that such a basic error was made in a Premier League game. Gallagher said: "It was a glaring error and it's difficult to fathom. Even referees in local parks should know that if there is an outside agent on the pitch then you stop the game and restart it with a drop ball. "When you set out as a referee you learn the laws of the game and everyone should know it. For it to happen at this level and in such a high-profile game is unbelievable. Any one of the four officials should have stepped in.'' The possibility if the game being replayed has been rejected by the Premier League. Becomes referees also 'chia lat' .........

Hi all, I'm looking to replace the ball bearings on my fan motor for my home aircon compressor. The manufacturer doesn't have this sold separately and wants to sell the whole fan to me at $300. The fan is still working well except that it is very noisy. I remembered near serangoon area, there's a shop that sells all sorts of bearings? But I can't remember it liao. PS: The aircon is not for my car. It's a home aircon. $300 for just a fan, is just not worth it.

ST 6 April 2008 Ronald Susilo is preparing to take legal action against former fiancee Li Jiawei to claim his share of a car and a condominium they had bought while they were together By Marc Lim, Sport Correspondent It had already become a fairytale romance without the happy ending. Now, the relationship which had the Singapore sports world - and Singapore - talking is set for another twist. National badminton player Ronald Susilo is considering taking legal action against his former fiancee, national table tennis player Li Jiawei. Susilo, 28, wants to claim his share in a condominium unit and car they bought together during their 51/2-year relationship. It is believed that he is seeking between $50,000 and $100,000. He has consulted lawyers on the matter. The couple broke off their engagement in January, after almost two years of speculation that their relationship was on the rocks. Susilo declined to comment when asked about the impending legal action. Li, 26, could not be contacted for comment. Sources told The Sunday Times that Susilo decided to seek legal help when Li started ignoring his calls after he handed the car over to her in February. The $80,000 black Honda Civic, which they bought in 2004, had been registered under her name. Both parties had a share in it, although sources said that the bulk of the cost of the car - paid for in monthly instalments - was borne by Susilo, who drives. Li does not. The two apparently reached an agreement after their break-up that they would split whatever money they received from selling the car, which would fetch about $40,000 now. After paying off the car loan, each party was to receive a few thousand dollars. But Li has been uncontactable. It is not known if the car has been sold. Said the source: 'Ronald felt he had little choice. She had ignored all his calls, SMSes and e-mails. He is not seeking the gifts or jewellery he gave her. Both of them were generous with gifts, and he has a few mobile phones and designer wear bought by her. 'All he is seeking is a share of whatever money is left over from the car and what he paid for the condo. He is concerned that if she is uncooperative over the sale of the car, he may also have difficulty claiming the money he had put into the apartment.' The apartment in question is in the Starville condominium at Kembangan. Li paid an estimated six-figure downpayment of its $600,000-plus price tag in 2004. A bank loan was taken by the couple to cover the rest of the price. It is believed that Susilo invested between $50,000 and $100,000 on the apartment, including renovation costs. Sources said that earning power helped determine how the couple should divide the cost. Li has, by far, more career earnings than her former beau, winning more than $500,000 from her competitions. Susilo's sporting success has earned him only a fifth of that. Her biggest pay cheque was $300,000 for bagging three golds and a silver at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games. His was about $25,000 for winning the 2004 Japan Open. The Kembangan property has since appreciated to more than $800,000. It is believed to be vacant, as Susilo lives in the Singapore Sports School with other national badminton players and Li stays at the Singapore Table Tennis Association's dormitories in Toa Payoh. Sources said that Li is likely to dispute the $50,000 to $100,000 sum Susilo is seeking. Based on what is known about the case, Patrick Tan, managing director of law firm Patrick Tan & Associates, which is not linked to the case, said that although Susilo is not the legal owner of both assets, he possesses 'equitable interests' and reserves the right to make a claim. Tan said that in such cases, the party making a claim will be required to show proof that payment was paid on the assets. For example, cheque payments or monthly deductions from bank accounts can be used as evidence that an individual has a stake in the assets. The onus will then be on the owner of the assets to prove that the other party had made the payments as a gift. The first stage is for the claimant to file a letter of demand. If the other party fails to respond, a writ of summons will be issued, possibly leading to a court date. This estrangement comes just three months after Susilo was quoted in the media as saying that he and Li had parted on amicable terms. But friends close to the couple revealed that China-born Li was already unhappy with Indonesia-born Susilo when he handed over the keys to the apartment in January. The couple had yet to formally move in together, but Susilo had been living there for a while in December. Said a friend of the couple who declined to be named: 'She was upset that some things in the apartment were misplaced. 'It also occurred to her that she was all right not talking to him while she was away and that was when she wanted to end things. She felt that if Ronald truly missed her, he would have made an attempt to call her, win her back. 'I think it all boils down to communication. That has never been one of their strengths from the beginning, given their different backgrounds.'
