Old thread. Suu Kyi in trouble with the Army again. Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior party figures detained by army Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling party have been detained in an early morning raid, the spokesman for the governing National League for Democracy said on Monday (Feb 1). The move comes after days of escalating tension between the civilian government and the powerful military that stirred fears of a coup in the aftermath of an election the army says was fraudulent. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asia/myanmar-leader-aung-san-suu-kyi-detained-spokesman-myo-nyunt-14084948

https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/adulting-101-untimely-deaths-friends-existential-crisis-2131826 Adulthood is an invigorating stage of life as young people join the workforce, take on more responsibilities and set their sights on the future. But its many facets — from managing finances and buying a home to achieving work-life balance — can be overwhelming. In this series, TODAY’s journalists help young Singaporeans navigate this stage of their lives and learn something themselves in the process. SINGAPORE — In the last two years, five people I knew died from sudden cardiac arrest. They were young and seemingly healthy people whose untimely demise came as a shock to their family and friends. They ranged in age from about 25 to 35. The grief hit me pretty hard, as I felt a lot of guilt and regret about my relationship with some of them. It got me to thinking — are more young people dying from sudden cardiac arrest? And should I be worried? Cardiologists from the National University Heart Centre Singapore told me that the risk of sudden deaths in young people remains exceedingly low. Based on the out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) data report published by the Singapore Heart Foundation four years ago, those above the age of 65 constitute the highest risk group of patients, accounting for 36.2 per cent of the 3,000 cases of cardiac arrest in 2019. There are about 3,000 cases of OHCA yearly here. One cardiologist told me that the prevalence of OHCA in Indians and Malays is twice the rate of Chinese. The prevalence of OHCA in men is also twice that of women. While uncommon, there are underlying conditions among young adults that can lead to sudden deaths, such as hypertrophic cardiomypathy (abnormal thickening of heart muscles) or arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythm of genetic causes), another cardiologist said. This is why health screenings are important, as people often believe themselves to be healthy if they do not have any symptoms of underlying disease when they may have conditions that are asymptomatic. Though sudden cardiac arrest among young people with no underlying conditions is rare, I could not shake this feeling that my life could be taken from me at any time. This led me to move beyond concerns over cardiac arrest affecting the young to wonder more broadly at the meaning of my brief, mortal existence. I was left feeling unmotivated and uneasy. Don’t get me wrong, my life is going okay — I have a good job, I have a roof over my head, I have two beautiful kids and a supportive husband — but I was being consumed by this thought that if life is so short, why bother doing anything? It occurred to me that I was perhaps having an existential crisis. Mr Praveen Nair, a psychologist at Raven Counselling and Consultancy, said that this occurs when there is an inner conflict within an individual causing them to break from traditional thinking patterns and recalibrate to become more contemplative with regard to questions about meaning, purpose and identity in life. Mr Nair also reassured me that I am not the only one feeling this way, as he has seen more adult clients with similar issues. One contributor to this is social media, said Mr Nair, as some netizens cherry pick what they share online to present a rosy picture of their lives, which can cause other users viewing the content to experience "fomo" (fear of missing out). This, in turn, can lead them to wondering about their direction in life. Mr Nair said it is normal to experience an existential crisis even when things in your life seem to be going okay as many things, both overt and subliminal, can influence our thoughts even when our lives are relatively routine. In fact, some argue that the mundane and routine can be a stimulus to initiating thoughts about the larger meaning or purpose of life. This makes sense, as I have been feeling a certain kind of tedium for some time now, juggling work and caring for two young children daily. Ms Abigail Yang, a grief therapist at counselling platform Talk Your Heart Out, said that it is normal to think deeply about life or question how you feel about it. The more fundamental issue is when no answer satisfies you, she added. “It becomes a constant loop of complex questions with no fulfilling solution. This, in turn, leads to a conflict within yourself about your reason for existence,” said Ms Yang. In some cases, extreme thoughts and unanswerable questions can leave one feeling frustrated, anxious, depressed and even suicidal, said experts. They also shared that one way to overcome an existential crisis is to disengage from pursuits or people that bring me no joy and redirect my energy to those that do. Mr Nair said this can help initiate renewed drive and motivation in life. “It may sound counterintuitive but many great innovations occurred when inventors experienced an existential crisis. They channelled their energies into a new venture that was motivating,” he told me. One way to overcome the crisis is to also take time to connect more with people whose company I enjoy, as an existential crisis can occur when we feel disconnected from others, said Mr Nair. Ms Yang reminded me that it is okay to allow myself to feel such negative emotions, and that I should not suppress them. Some people block out pain and suffering, thinking this will make them happy, but it can often lead to a false sense of happiness, she said. Embodying emotions and acknowledging feelings of pain, discontentment and dissatisfaction can open the door to personal growth, and improve one’s outlook on life, Ms Yang added. One tip I got from a friend that has helped me deal with my existential crisis is this: "KonMari" your schedule, rid yourself of self-imposed duties and obligations and identify areas where you could be doing less, doing something easier, or doing nothing at all. This is a reference to Japanese author Marie Kondo and her ideas about ridding our lives of needless clutter. This might mean, for instance, your one-hour exercise routine becomes a 20-minute one, or perhaps you ditch it all together for an extra hour of sleep. The only person that should be happy with the choice you make is you. ABOUT THE WRITER: Nabilah Awang, 29, is a former Senior Journalist at TODAY.

Oftentimes when we see a supercar such as a Ferrari, Lamborghini or McLaren, we would wish to be in their position and understand how it is like to drive such a flashy and sporty car. However, I, for one, would not wish to be in the position of this particular Ferrari driver. Watch it here: What Happened? The incident above occurred at an open-air carpark at North Bridge Road Market Food Centre. Police officers and Traffic police officers arrested the driver of a Ferrari 458 Italia and performed a thorough search of the Ferrari 458 Italia. It was later revealed that the Ferrari's road tax expired on 28 January 2022, indicating that the Ferrari cannot be driven on public roads in Singapore. Subsequently, the Ferrari 458 Italia was impounded and towed away by the Traffic Police. Update The Ferrari driver was arrested on suspicion for drug related charges. Bougie car with a bougie car plate One netizen pointed out the Ferrari's unique single-digit number plate that features a single "5". So, I did some simple research on Sgcarmart and found out that a car plate with a single digit "5" can cost upwards of $40,000! What better way to flaunt your wealth by slapping on an expensive car plate on an expensive car! Netizens' Comments Some people will complain this will be a waste of public resources. I don't think an expired road tax will result in the police cuffing you. Highly likely he committed a more serious offence! Whatever substance this fella is high on seems to be pretty potent. ========= Be the first to get the latest road/ COE news, and get first dibs on exclusive promos and giveaways in our Telegram SGCM Community. CNA report : Five policemen killed in revenge attack at Shanghai station SHANGHAI - A Chinese man armed with a knife killed five policemen on Tuesday when he went on a stabbing frenzy at a Shanghai police station in what authorities said was a revenge attack. The man stabbed nine officers and a security guard at the station in the north of the city, the Shanghai public security bureau said in a statement. Officers quickly overpowered and arrested the man, an unemployed 28-year-old Beijing native, police said, but five police were killed in the attack. The man, identified only by his surname Yang, confessed he had wanted revenge after police arrested him in October on suspicion of stealing bicycles. "He was unhappy ... In order to take revenge, he decided to commit criminal actions," the statement said. The killings occurred as China was gearing up for next month's 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, an event that has resulted in stepped up police security throughout the nation. According to the statement, the man set a fire outside the police station's front gate at around 9:40am local time, attracting the security guard's attention. He stabbed the guard and then charged into the station. "He broke into the building, attacking policemen who were at work," the statement said. Police in blood-soaked clothes could be seen being carried out, the state-run Eastday.com news website reported, citing witnesses. Some of the officers had chest injuries while others' faces were bloody, the Xinhua news agency reported citing a witness named Yi. At least one officer was declared dead upon arrival at hospital within half an hour of the attack and another died shortly afterwards, a Changzheng Hospital spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity. Two other officers were in intensive care, but their conditions were stable, she added. Officials refused to comment at Beizhan hospital where the other victims were taken. Violent crime is unusual in China, but the speed with which Tuesday's attack was reported by Shanghai's state media was also rare. Authorities, however, quickly pulled pictures off one photo sharing website that showed blood pooling in the gutter outside the station. The killings come after up to 30,000 people took to the streets in a county town in China's southwest Guizhou province on Saturday, protesting and rioting over a police investigation into the death of a teenage girl. Protesters claimed the girl had been raped and killed by a relative of a local official who had ordered the police to cover up the crime.

SINGAPORE has issued a Warrant of Arrest against ex-Romanian envoy Dr Silviu Ionescu, who was involved in a tragic hit-and-run accident in December. The Romanian Ambassador to Singapore, HE Aurelian Neagu was officially informed of this during a meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Friday. Ambassador Neagu was also informed of the findings of the Coroner's Inquiry and the charges preferred by the Singapore Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) against Dr Ionescu. MFA stressed that the Romanian Government had a clear moral obligation to do all it could to persuade Dr Ionescu to come back to Singapore to stand trial. A Red Notice has been issued against Dr Ionescu. Ambassador Neagu informed MFA that the Romanian Prosecutor's Office had started criminal investigations against Dr Ionescu on 2 February 2010 on "homicide by negligence, leaving the scene of an accident and false statements". Ambassador Neagu stressed that Romania was committed to seeing justice done. The Ambassador explained that Romania would need to conduct its own investigations against Dr Ionescu in accordance with Romanian law. He assured MFA that Romania would continue to cooperate fully with Singapore on the matter. Singapore would also cooperate with Romania to the fullest extent possible under our law to our common purpose of seeing that justice was served. To this end, MFA formally informed the Ambassador that Singapore agreed to the establishment of a Joint Technical Working Group (or Rogatory Commission) as proposed by the Romanian side in a letter dated 24 February 2010, and conveyed to Singapore by the Romanian Embassy in Singapore only on 8 March (which was received on 10 March 2010.) The Ambassador was told that Singapore could not have formally agreed to the proposal for a Joint Technical Working Group (or Rogatory Commission) before the Coroner had given his findings on 31 March 2010 as Singapore could not prejudge the outcome of the Coroner's Inquiry and the subsequent decision by our AGC to prefer charges against Dr Ionescu. However, MFA noted that Singapore's Minister for Law had already replied on 16 March 2010 indicating our willingness to cooperate with the Romanian authorities to the fullest extent possible under our law. MFA stressed that the Joint Technical Working Group (or Rogatory Commission) should be set up as soon as possible, and should start work by May 2010. If the Romanian side was ready to begin work earlier, Singapore was ready to do so as we had already appointed our representatives to the Joint Technical Working Group (or Rogatory Commission). The Ambassador thanked Singapore for agreeing to the setting up of the Joint Technical Working Group (or Rogatory Commission) and said that the Romanian Prosecutor was ready to fly down to Singapore to meet with his counterparts "at anytime". MFA welcomed this assurance and told the Ambassador that we hoped that the Romanian authorities would propose specific dates for the visit without delay. MFA also lodged a strong protest to the Ambassador on the inappropriate comments made by Dr Ionescu to the media on the integrity of Singapore's judicial system and the victims. Dr Ionescu's comments were without basis, callous in the extreme and showed an utter lack of remorse. MFA pointed out that the Singapore legal system was widely known for its transparency, integrity and high standards and that Dr Ionescu's callous comments on the victims had only further inflamed public feelings against Dr Ionescu and Romania. MFA welcomed the Romanian MFA's disavowal of the allegations made by Dr Ionescu about the Coroner's Inquiry and Singapore's judicial system and its clarification that they did not represent the position of the Romanian Government. MFA, however, stressed to the Ambassador that it was puzzling that the Romanian MFA continued to allow Dr Ionescu, who was still an employee of the Romanian Foreign Ministry, to make such inappropriate remarks. While Dr Ionescu had been suspended from his duties pending the outcome of the criminal investigation against him in Romania, he had not been dismissed. As long as Dr Ionescu remained formally in the employment of the Romanian government, the Romanian MFA had a strong obligation to ensure that Dr Ionescu refrained from making outrageous and inappropriate statements. Such statements damaged Romania's reputation and were not in Dr Ionescu's own interests either. MFA cautioned Ambassador Neagu that Romania should not underestimate the depth of feelings that had been aroused in Singapore over the case. Questions had been asked in Parliament. The Romanian Government must in its own interests ensure that justice was served and seen to be served. Otherwise, there would inevitably be consequences for bilateral relations.

YANGON: Myanmar authorities on Thursday charged opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi with breaching the conditions of her house arrest and her trial will start on May 18, her lawyer said. Aung San Suu Kyi and her two maids faced the charges when they appeared at a court in the notorious Insein Prison, hours after police escorted them from the pro-democracy icon's lakeside home. The charges come a week after the arrest of US national John Yettaw, who was detained by police for swimming across a lake and staying at her off-limits residence for two days before he was caught. "The authorities have charged Aung San Suu Kyi and her two maids under Section 22" of the Law Safeguarding the State from the Dangers of Subversive Elements, under which she is detained, lawyer Hla Myo Myint said. Yettaw also appeared in court and was charged with breaching the security law and with immigration violations, Hla Myo Myint added. He said that the trials of Aung San Suu Kyi and her maids would begin on May 18 at Insein Prison in Yangon, but did not give a date for Yettaw.
