  1. The BMW 5GT was created with a number of combinations of car types in mind and that can be quite confusing to what sort of a segment this car fits in. But don't let that be the only reason why you should dislike it because its unique looks will help make it stand out in the sea of sedans that have become quite a boring sight. Everything else you see and feel, from the dashboard and the door panels to the lavish wood and leather-swathed seats, is a significant leap ahead in style, design and comfort. The boot volume has been increased to 500 litres, up from the previous 440 litres. Also generous is the ample head and legroom, which will make the three rear passengers very satisfied. Predictably, despite its heft of over two tonnes, the 5GT handles with remarkable alacrity. While the heft of the car can still be felt around bends, the 306 horses and 400Nm of twisting forces make it very forgivable. BMW's in-line gorgeous-sounding six-cylinders powering the 3.0-litre engine are also capable of delivering a strong and continuous wave of torque, allowing the car to pull away from 0 to 100km/h in just 6.1 seconds.
  2. The sales of the new BMW 5 Series seem to be pretty strong over here as I had observed a handful of them plying the streets of Singapore and also in Malaysia. I have even managed to catch a glimpse of the really weird looking semi pointless 5 Grand Turismo being driven around. And as with every new launch motoring enthusiasts would want to know when will the full monty M series models be launched. So to satisfy those hardcore M fans, and also those who are realists, who are those that dream of owning a M5 but can afford a 525, 530 or that sort, BMW has officially launched their M-Sport aero detailing for the 5 series. The first peek of the official M-Sport body addenda for the BMW 5 series was recently leaked by the BMW enthusiasts at 5Post Forum. The pictures (meant for a UK sales brochure or press release) clearly show a new front bumper that has a little of the M-Sport 3 series front bumper air inlets, side skirts and a rear bumper valance. There is also a discreet rear bootlid spoiler. As for handling, the M-Sport 5 series sits lower due to the M-Sport suspension. The suspension is coupled with the 'standard' M-Sport 18inch double spoke rims which will come with a M-Sport specified 5 series. There is a 19inch option rims with a thinner double spoke design that can be specced at a price. If you noticed from the pictures, 19inches look small on this new 5 series. And that's pretty shocking in a way. As for the interior, we can tell that there is a smaller, maybe fatter three spoke steering wheel with the 'M' badging on it and a pair of sportier, body hugging front seats. The rest of the interior looks pretty much like any 2010-2011 5 series. I do not even see any alloy pedal covers that would make this interior even better looking. But then again these are leaked shots, so BMW may spring out some changes or some additions soon. So, there you have it. The BMW M-Sport 5series to please those who want an M5, but cannot afford one as yet so they can get some of the looks (and handling) for their normal 5 series. Well, with other commitments, sometimes the best motoring dreams have to be put on hold and this is a way to realize a part of those dreams.
  3. The BMW 5 series Gran Turismo is one niche-mobile too far in terms of looks. The 5 series GT has the very blunt looking front end styling of previous generation E65 7 series as well as its ride height and the X6 styling from the A pillar rearwards. It is actually the illegitimate love child of these two BMWs but somehow, like most BMW niche-mobiles it will sell decently well. But this article isn't about making the 5 series GT sound like a total abomination as it is about HAMANN-Motorsport's reworking of it. So I will try to stop giving it a hard time for now. It has been stated that the F07 (the internal codename for the 5 series GT) was specifically designed with the United States market in particular. Which actually explains the size (larger than a 5 series sedan but slightly smaller than a 7 series) and its weird niche marketing looks. So HAMANN has decided to make the car into something a little more chic, more stylish, more sporty and of course more power. So we start by looking at the 'chic' and 'stylish' part of the modification first. Front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser type valence with room for four 90mm tailpipes and a rear wing make the car look a little more aggressive as well as looking a little lower to the ground when coupled with the lowering kit. This lowering kit works with the standard air suspension that is fitted on the 530d, 535i and 550i versions and make the car look even less like a lowered X6 Sports SUV and more like what a 5 series is supposed to look like. The kit also adds as one of the wheel options the HAMANN Anniversary-Evo steamroller 22inch wheels and tires to complete it. 9.0inches wide in front on 265/30ZR22 tires and 10.5inches wide at the rear riding on 295/25ZR22 tires. So with the body kit and large wheels, it does look sportier than before. But it is still a little dumpy looking, to me that is. I suppose this is the best HAMANN could do with the F07. For the power part, HAMANN has also developed a tuning kit for the 530d which makes 275bhp from the standard 245bhp. Torque figures goes up from 540Nm to a tree pulling 620Nm at a fabulously low 1,750rpm. The petrol powered cars will most probably have the standard ECU tuning, air intake and exhaust systems to make petrol heads happy too.
