The MediaCorp Raintree Pictures production has been chosen by the Singapore Film Commission (SFC) as Singapore's official entry for the annual awards. It will be submitted for the category of Best Foreign Language Film. The SFC said its board members unanimously chose the movie as it presents a part of the rich and colourful street culture of Singapore. The film will also showcase the country's unique heritage to the international audience. Nominations for the Academy Awards will be announced on 22 January next year, with the awards ceremony to be held on 24 February. The Academy Awards aside, '881' will be screened at the 12th Pusan International Film Festival from 4-12 October this year. '881' tells the story of the Papaya sisters who grew up mesmerised by the glitter and glamour of the getai (song stage) and went on to become two of the showiest performers on the circuit. The movie, directed by Roystan Tan, is already the highest grossing Asian movie in Singapore to date this year. It grossed over S$3.2 million since its opening at local cinemas on August 8. - CNA/ir
