https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/australianz/father-and-son-in-australia-drown-saving-tourist-near-popular-spot-the-twelve Father and son in Australia drown saving tourist near popular spot Twelve Apostles MELBOURNE (AFP) - A father and son life-saving team drowned while trying to save a tourist swept out to sea near one of Australia's most famous sights off the south coast, officials said on Monday (April 22). Mr Ross Powell, 71, and his son Andrew, 32, died on Sunday after their life-saving boat overturned in the surf during the rescue of a 30-year-old man near the Twelve Apostles, a series of massive limestone stacks situated off the Victoria state coast. The tourist, whose nationality and name have not been released, had been wading at the mouth of a river when he got into trouble. He was winched from the water alongside a third lifesaver from the boat, who was seriously injured, by a rescue helicopter and taken to hospital, Victoria Police said. The bodies of the Powells were found in the water shortly after. The tragedy has rocked the small tourist town of Port Campbell where the two men came from, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison leading the tributes. "Surf lifesavers are selfless & brave. We thank them all for their service & extend our deepest sympathies to Ross & Andrew's family & friends," Mr Morrison tweeted on Monday. Surf Lifesaving Victoria president Paul James hailed the pair as heroes, and said the conditions had been rough and "not the place to be swimming". "It's just terrible, it's heartbreaking," he told reporters in an emotional press conference of the death of the dairy farmers and experienced volunteer lifesavers. "I understand the boat was operating in a 2m swell, so a very high swell, and we know that it is very treacherous down there... These brave people, these heroes, have gone out to try and help." Ms Amber Griffiths, the partner of Andrew and who local media reported was pregnant with their second child, wrote about her heartbreak on Facebook. "Today we lost two of the most beautiful people to ever exist - always putting others first," she wrote. "The love of my life, light of my life, father of my baby girl. My heart is broken. I miss you Andrew Powell."

Duo behind The Real Singapore website arrested for sedition Two of the three people behind The Real Singapore (TRS), a socio-political website, have been arrested. This follows a Feb 4 article where the duo are said to have embellished an article posted by a witness of an incident during the recent Thaipusam festival. The TRS article had claimed a Filipino family had sparked an exchange which led to three Singaporean men being arrested on Feb 3. But no Filipino family was involved. The original author of the article also denied the involvement of a Filipino family. Police confirmed the arrest of a Singaporean, 26 and an Australian woman, 22. The two were arrested on Feb 6 under the Sedition Act and investigations into the case are ongoing. Hmmmmm............. in the year 2100, Singapore will have underwater-sub MRT ... Yahoo : Climate change could force 745,000 Singaporeans underwater Rising sea levels could have disastrous effects on coastal cities around the world, including Singapore, according to results published by Climate Central. The report detailed the implications of different global warming scenarios of 1.5, 2, 3 and 4 degrees Celsius by 2100, and found that carbon emissions causing 4C of warming a business-as-usual scenario could cause Singapores median local sea level to rise 9.5 metres, submerging the homes of 745,000 Singaporeans. This number is based on the 2010 population figure of 4.68 million. Even if carbon emissions were cut, resulting in the proposed international target of 2C warming, there would still be 101,000 Singaporeans affected, with the median local sea level projected to rise 5.1 metres. China, the worlds leading carbon emitter, leads the world in coastal risk, with 145 million people threatened by rising seas if emission levels are not reduced. Global megacities with the top-10 largest threatened populations include Shanghai, Hong Kong, Calcutta, Mumbai, Dhaka, Jakarta, and Hanoi. more stories, link : https://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/climate-change-could-force-745-000-singaporeans-underwater-053221746--sector.html Map showing which areas in Singapore at at risk from global warming (in light blue)

sorry folks but had to vent this somewhere ... today went to one of those "longkang" fish place for kids where kids can catch "longkang" fish like we did when we small ... what's frustrates me was it's the PARENTS not their kids that goes all out catching these goldfishes in these shallow ponds .. what worst was a number of these kiasu parents catch until their small 6inch by 4 inch fish tank that was provided is full to the brim with goldfish ... imagine those small tanks filled with about 30-50 goldfish ... come on now don't tell me you have a huge fish tank at home to put all those fish .. why so greedy??? in the first place its for the kids not for the parents ... there are signs which says only kids allowed in the pool and not more than 5 fish per tank ... I would understand if you want to help your kid catch a fish but to scoop out 50 and squeeze them into that tiny tank its too much ... it shows your greed .. you know half of those fish will die by the time you reach home let alone survive until next week ... and all this done while their brat kids stomp around and slapping the water surface stunning whatever fish that's left behind ... they also position their maid to prevent other kids from going to the spot where they had "chopped" maybe it's just my luck that today there were at least 3 or 4 such greedy kiasu families but it sure spoils the trip for the rest of the other families ... looking at what's happening I didn't let my kids catch fish today ... a number of other families that arrive after us also decided to just move on ... I feel it's a real shameful act by these parents that had obviously teach their kids that greed is good and to destroy whatever that left behind so others can't get it ... shame on you !!!

Saw this article Mar 16 http://travel.asiaone.com/article/news/what-some-sporeans-do-when-travelling-overseas By Chai Hung Yin The New Paper | Mon, Mar 16 2015 Chinese tourists, who have been making headlines for poor behaviour abroad, are not the only badly behaved travellers. Singaporeans sometimes don't fare much better. Here are some anecdotes from Singaporeans serving Singaporeans travellers. COMPLAINT KING (READ: DEMANDING AND FUSSY) Singaporeans are among those who are the hardest to please when it comes to food, says Mr John Tan, 50, a tour leader, and tour guide. "They even expect the overseas chef to whip up local dishes like fried beehoon," says Mr Tan. Singaporeans also demand cheap stuff but then complain about the poor quality, he adds. "They do not understand that it is 'yi fen qian, yi fen huo' (the quality of the product depends on the price)." BADLY BEHAVED KIDS A child, aged five, refused to have his seat belt fastened and his parents did nothing on a flight from Jakarta. An air steward who wanted to be known only as Jude recalls: "The child wasn't sick, just naughty. Yet the parents still accommodated the kid's antics." Just before the flight landed, the father stood up with the child in his arms to pacify him. Jude says: "It was very dangerous. I shouted at the top of my voice for him to sit down. He had a shock and thankfully sat down (with the kid)." AIRPLANE FRACAS A group of Singaporeans on a tour to an East Asian country chatted loudly on a red-eye flight. It prompted a passenger trying to get some shut-eye to throw water on the group. The water fell on a teenager and escalated into a fracas when the girl's father stood up and grabbed the neck of the passenger, says tour guide Simon Lim. When the plane landed, the airport police were waiting for them. The tour group was held up while Mr Lim tried to mediate between the feuding parties. HELLO RABID KITTY FANS In June 2013, a Singaporean couple wrecked a Hello Kitty-themed one-room apartment in Taipei when they were there for a holiday. They even refused to return the apartment keys and returned days later to steal snacks, a limited edition Hello Kitty hair dryer and toys. The owner of the property estimated that the damage caused by the couple was about NT$30,000 (S$1,315). WHY TIP? A woman in her 50s told freelance tour leader Vincent Ng at the start of a tour in Egypt: "Make sure your service is really good. Otherwise I'll deduct $2 a day (from his tips)." Mr Ng, 50, ended up serving her hand and foot, going as far as holding the woman's hands when she was walking across a bridge or riding a horse. She was pleased at first, but changed her tack when it came to their last meal. She grumbled about "eating in a Chinese restaurant in Egypt". Mr Ng eventually forked out US$60 (S$85) of his own money on room service for her. Yet she still wasn't happy when he collected service fees from the tour group, and relented only when others chided her for not wanting to pay. RELUCTANT BAG STOWER A plane nearly turned back after a woman in her mid 30s refused to stow her cabin luggage: Not in the overhead compartment, nor underneath the seat in front of her. Says Jude, who works for a no-frills airline "She was five seconds away from being off-loaded." She finally gave in after much cajoling from the crew. When they arrived at their destination, she went up to Jude's colleagues and threatened: "Don't you know who I am? I'm the Complaint Queen." How ironic.. Comments

Hey everyone, I really need your help! My name is Andreanna and I am a Canadian Master's student studying in the Netherlands. I am researching how people from different countries and culture think about corporate social responsibility. Singapore is one of my focal countries so I need people from Singapore to answer my (short!) online survey. To reach my target I still need 50 respondents and I am running out of time. So if you could help me by filling out my survey I would be so happy! Also, you have the chance to win a prize of a US$ 30.00 i Tunes gift card (or the equivalent in SGD). If you win and prefer a different kind of gift card (Steam, Amazon etc) then that is also not a problem :) The survey should not take you longer than 8 minutes. Your responses will be treated confidentially and used only for the purpose of this research. Here is the link: https://umsbe.eu.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_2cowuD6UCvfCKd7 Thank you in advance for your help - I really really appreciate it - Andreanna

So far, no report of any Singaporean killed .... Both the drivers (bus & truck) died ...... R.I.P. CNA news : 33 Singaporean tourists in Hokkaido accident, several injured A truck and a tour bus with 33 Singaporeans on board collided in Hokkaido's Nanae Town, reports Japan's NHK. HOKKAIDO, Japan: A number of Singaporeans have been injured in Japan after a truck and a tour bus collided in Hokkaido's Nanae Town. According to a report on NHK, the drivers of both vehicles have died. There were 33 passengers on the tour bus, all of whom were Singaporeans. The Hokkaido police said they received an emergency call at 9.43 am (8.43am Singapore time) on Thursday (Oct 23), regarding a head-on collision between a cargo vehicle and a large bus on National Route 5, a major highway on Hokkaido island. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. The Singaporean tourists will be questioned at Hakodate Central Police Station. A spokesman from Hong Thai Travel Services in Singapore, which handled the tour, said several of the Singaporeans suffered sprains, but none sustained major injuries. He said that the company is contacting the tourists in Japan. A representative from Hong Thai Travel Services will be flying to Japan to get more details on the situation, and the company is still investigating, he added. link: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/33-singaporean-tourists/1430534.html

5 MAJOR FACTS ABOUT SINGAPORE THAT EVERY SINGAPOREAN SHOULD UNDERSTAND http://theinfluencermedia.com/2014/07/20/5-major-facts-about-singapore-that-every-singaporean-should-understand/ Lately there has been an ongoing trend of Singaporeans lashing out at the government, voicing out unhappiness and dissatisfaction. We saw a article of how we are ranked in the top most expensive cities, we had Roy Ngerng causing a huge stir about the CPF system, we had photo comparisons of what a 3-room flat in Bishan can be like a bungalow in Pennsylvania. Many people are saying that our ministers are getting paid too high and there is a large widening gap between the rich and the poor. To make things worse, the recent boom in foreigners has caused upset amongst Singaporeans, citing that Singapore has less Singaporeans than foreigners. We love comparing to successful first-world countries. Oh, look at how great Germany is doing. Look at how wonderful it is to live in the Scandinavian countries. It will be so much better to migrate to the UK or Australia. What I can tell you is that if you are someone who follows world news, global economics and politics closely, you will realize that every country has their own problems as well. 1) Population Control A.K.A. Why are there so many foreigners in Singapore? No, Singapore is NOT the only country that is facing an immigration issue. The United Kingdoms, Germany, Australia, United States of America, Canada is also facing the same issue. Ironically, these are the countries that Singaporeans want to migrate to because they believe they can enjoy a better lifestyle there. Before you start to tell everyone about your dreams to migrate, have you considered that when you migrate to a foreign country, you automatically become one of those foreign immigrants which Singaporeans are so upset about? Here is the hypocrisy when Singaporeans point out they are not happy that so many foreigners are overtaking Singapore, and Singaporeans say they want to migrate to other countries, and eventually they end up being a foreigner in a different land. And this is exactly how our first-world counterparts feel. People in Europe and the U.S. are complaining that there are so many Asians flowing into their country. Their own local populace is also crying out that there are too many people coming into their country. And this is why we must look into the reason on why immigration happens. People immigrate in hopes of finding a better lifestyle than staying in their home ground. Countries allow immigrants to come in, if they can provide the countries with benefits. Why has Singapore become a hotspot for immigrants? Let me introduce to you jobs which pay about $1,600-$1,800 a month, to do cleaning services, waitressing, laundry, bus operators, cashiering, clerk assistants or construction labor. Too many proud, and elitist mindset Singaporean graduates want the easy life and cannot handle hardship. If every Singaporean refuses to do blue-collar jobs, who will do it? Who will be the ones who keeps our streets clean, construct awe-inspiring buildings like the Esplanade, Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay Sands, operate our MRT and bus services, serve our food at restaurants, maintain proper roads and infrastructure? 5 marina_bay_singapore The governments and employers have no choice, they need to open up the job offer to anyone outside our country, who are hungry for jobs and dont mind taking up the offer. And yet certain, bad-mouthing Singaporeans still complain that they get bad service from foreign workers. The notion here is, If you think you can do a better job than them, go ahead and do it instead of complaining 2) Treating the CPF system like it is a complete scam A certain blogger Roy Ngerng has churned out many infographs about how menacing the CPF system is. While the the information cannot be proved to be true, what we can comprehend is very clear. Personal income tax in Singapore averages 6.5%. The top marginal income tax you could ever hit is 20%. CPF contribution is also another 20%. This may sound harsh to you, but please take note that in other first-world countries, their personal income tax is higher than our maximum 20%. Some countries go up to 50%. Thats like an employer promising you a $4,000 salary but you only get to take home $2,000. In Singapore, we may only take home 70-80% of our net supposed salary. However, 20% of that amount is still technically yours. Unlike other countries, our government has not completely removed that 20% away, never to be seen again. It is simply kept in a retirement account. And the bonus is that you can still use your CPF to pay off any medical bills, insurances and housing bills. The CPF money can still be used and planned to a certain extent. I dont know about you, but I much rather have 20% in a retirement account than have it completely taken away by income tax. No matter how bad you might assume CPF is, its already a system that is much better than 90% of other countries. If you blatantly say you just want to migrate to other countries because there is no CPF there, you are forgetting something called 2-3x higher income tax rate 3) Complaining about Real Estate and Car Prices Thousands of motorists sit stuck in the Ladies and gentlemen, this is what our roads and highways will look like if the government makes car prices as low as that in the United States ($20,000 avg.) If we let every Singaporean have the privilege of owning a car, we will have infinite traffic jams, and even commuters who choose to take the bus will find themselves caught in these massive jams. Even motorcycle users will be affected. Air pollution indexes will raise higher than what our forest fire hazes have given us, and everyone will have to walk out with N95 masks everyday like the situation in Beijing. Is this what you want? Low car prices? Flash news! Singapore is an island state that is no more than 42km wide. It is irrational to blame the government for having such a small island to work with. Since we are born into a small country state, maybe its time to accept the fact that not everyone can be allowed to own a car. The COE system is put in place so that people with higher status, eg. businessmen, professionals, managers, politicians who have a bigger need for cars can afford the $70,000 to travel around. The notion here is that if you cant afford a car, simply settle for public transport. It only takes a maximum of 1 hour 15 minutes to travel from Tampines to Jurong via MRT. Anyway, if you are a financially educated person, you will know that owning a car is having more liabilities, which is a bad financial decision especially if you are aiming to get rich ASAP. In a way, the government is discouraging people from buying cars, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Which brings me to my point of soaring real estate prices in Singapore. HDB_10_2_1 We simply love comparing that our $400,000 3-room flat in Tampines/Bishan can afford us a freakin Villa (complete with poolside and balcony) in Thailand or Mexico. Let me emphasize again that we are a small island, so it is simply irrational to blame the government for having such a small island. We cannot build 1,000,000 Villas for the 1,000,000 households in Singapore for everyone to live in. There is not enough space. This is common sense that you cannot fit so many big houses into a small country. Take a look at other countries who are suffering from land shortages. Real estate prices in Hong Kong are more expensive than Singapores. Japans real estate prices is almost similar. Everywhere in the world, real estate prices are generally rising due to demand and supply from people who need a house. Another notion here is, if you cannot afford to buy a big house, settle for a small one, or just rent out a flat. And if you really want to live in a Villa with $400,000, please consider migrating because you wont find anymore hope here. 4) Difficulty of finding employment, even with a degree In agreement to point number 1, its really not the case that its hard to find employment in Singapore. Its more about us Singaporeans being too elitist and picky for own good. What do most of us always say we want to be upon graduation? 9168898_orig Oh, I wanna be a [insert industry here] manager Well, captain obvious, if the entire population dreams of becoming a manager, who will become the employee? Think about that just for awhile. Working as an employers assistance, I have posted out job listings calling for receptionists and customer service executives needed for SMEs. The pay given was $2,200, which includes potential commission if sales deals are closed over the counter. I specifically stated that the education level required was not necessary, as long as the applicant knows how to speak fluent English and their natural mother tongue. The catch? You must commit to a 6-day work week, 9 hours a day. This sounds like a grind, but, I got 0 replies from Singaporeans, and 20 replies from foreigners. You see, its not that its hard to get a job in Singapore. Its just that if everyone wanted to become managers, theres simply not enough. Once again, simple demand and supply concept. As for people who rant about how so many foreign workers are taking up managerial positions and commanding Singapore employees to do jobs instead, I believe that from a HR perspective, these foreigners have already achieved a good reputation through networking and work experience. Because honestly, if you are a Singaporean with a good track record of experience, and your foreign rival has no experience at all, any logical HR manager will hire you instead. Before we start jumping to conclusions, we need to take a step back and appreciate that some foreign workers indeed have the necessary years of experience required and have displayed good working habits in order to get the promotion to a managerial role. Trust me, if you set up your own business one day, and get a chance to be your own boss, you would also choose your employees based on their work attitude, personality, and years of experience. Nationality is a very weak subject in the world of employment. 5) No explanation needed Singapore-River 1_marina_bay_night_2012 Our government has transformed Singapore from 3rd-world kampung island to 1st-world global recognized state in a matter of 40 odd years. If you cant even appreciate this fact, its time to do some self-reflection of whether you can do a better job in their shoes, if we reset time to 1965. Jackie Loh Writer The Influencer Media

I drove in many countries before and this is what I personally feel and experienced.... Today while driving to a unfarmiliar place for dinner, I was keeping to the leftmost lane trying to navigate. Before coming to this red traffic light, I realize actually I have to continue straight but the leftmost lane can only go left. Signaled right and did a lane change. To be fair, my car was positioned slightly slanted but fully in my new lane. There was a red Volvo coming from far, when it reached me after like 10 seconds , it suddenly gave me a loud horn and switch to the left most lane. The 40-50s lady inside then gave me a killer stare, was gesturing to a man supposedly his husband. I looked at her and waved sorry. She then start shaking her head furiously, continued complaining to her old man. Not that it matters, but I realize there was a big wooden cross hanging from the rear view mirror. The light took awhile to turn green, I was really amused to see this strong reaction from the old lady....
