Contax 1st Gear January 28, 2009 Share January 28, 2009 My home use PC has finally die on me on chinese new year eve. It's a 6 years old compaq presario and mainly use for surfing the internet by the family and some simple microsoft word . I guess the hard disk has crashed. The moment I on the power , it will show me the pink color compaq page with option to "F1 - RESET F10 ...."can't remember , and then it will emit a continuous high pitch alarm sound... Repairing it I think will be beyond economical repair . A friend of mine was telling me to get those pre-assemble pc from simlim , a shop call videopro , and then a colleague of mine was recommending me the apple i-mac which he say willbe cheaper if I can produce my son student pass and they will give a 10~15% discount . By the way I'm using starhub broadband and my budget is around 1K . So what you guys think or suggest ? ↡ Advertisement

Twofouronenite 1st Gear January 28, 2009 Share January 28, 2009 Have 2 agree, but need 2 go for at least 3 years warranty else no point. Overall brand seem better except bo-HewPppl, fark up attitude I got from their after sales. Servicing guys from Dell did 2 hours on my harddisk change and also help with advise on my Dell LT I got overseas. Phones services I give no2 cause no1 goes to Canon unfortunately they dun have PC. I have differing opinions.. if you are not on-the-move type of guy, a desktop is better with bigger HDD, ram and processor.. and you will get bigger viewable screen as well. but if you want to move ard, then add in another $300 or more to get another netbook for the move.. it's cheaper than a Ipod Touch.. Galantspeedz Turbocharged January 28, 2009 Share January 28, 2009 (edited) I bought a lenovo PC, just the tower, Intel pentium dual core 2.5Ghz, 2GB Ram, 250GB HDD, chinese software, etc for about $700 Then bought a samsung 19" LCD monitor for $239 and Evo 8 speakers for $60+. It also comes with wireless keyboard and mouse and webcam and windows vista. So it is almost like a laptop. Total about $1k Bought at challenger Simei. Take note, the tower itself cost more at parkway challenger. I don't know why. I think it was a good deal. I bought it about 1-2mths ago Edited January 28, 2009 by Galantspeedz

Nullifi3d 4th Gear January 28, 2009 Share January 28, 2009 The high pitch "eeee" sound usually denotes something wrong with your RAM i usually get that when i mess around while upgrading RAM sticks. Don't give up on your PC just yet, get a new stick of RAM for less than $40 depending on the type of RAM stick needed. FYI i bought 2 gigs of PC800mhz sticks o RAM for $32 recently. Route88 2nd Gear January 28, 2009 Share January 28, 2009 Get the pre-assemble pc from sim lim. You dont need monitor right? Should be less than 1K since for family surf . Unless a pc design for gaming, den would cost a lot.

I got one Lenovo for my MIL at 1099 with 500gb hdd and 4 gb ram.. come with 19inch monitor with builtin webcam.. ↡ Advertisement
