Genie47 1st Gear July 27, 2005 Share July 27, 2005 (edited) Firstly. Aveo. The 1.4L ETECII engine is actually a GM Family I engine designed in the 1970s. Both the 1.4 DOHC and 1.5 SOHC are Family I engines. Family I engines are designed by Adam Opel. DOHC versions feature aluminium cylinder blocks. Local Optra and Optra5 in the 1.6L DOHC variants are also Family I engines. Only the Malaysian Optra LT1.8 is using a Family II engine. ETECII is EuroIII compliant. Spango Clutched July 27, 2005 Share July 27, 2005 Does that mean that the engine can use those old S rated engine oil, since it is 70s technology? BTW, is EuroIII a very old standard, since a 1970 engine can also meet it?
Genie47 1st Gear July 27, 2005 Author Share July 27, 2005 (edited) There is a big difference between design and technology. True the Family series of engines are designed in the 70s but the technology is present. BTW, ETECII's predecessor is DTEC which is a Family II engine. Ecotec 1.6 and 1.8 from Opel are Family II. Twinport which is found in the current Opel Astra is also Family II. The main Family I engines now in use are in the GMDAT Chevies. If your Chevy is less than 1.4L as in 1.1 and 1.2L, it is Family 0. The older Astra's as in the SAF Astra wagons are Family I ditto for the 1.6L versions. Only the 1.8 and above Astras are Family II but if it is 1.6L and Eotec, it is Family II. Calibra and Vectra are Family II powered. Edited July 27, 2005 by Genie47

Silver_blade Turbocharged July 31, 2005 Share July 31, 2005 No, I think what he meant was the technology started in the 70's, but it the current is an improved ones which meet today's euro standard. Alot of today's engine technology can be traced back as far as the 60's or earlier..eg. Mazda rotary engine, boxer, V8, etc. But those you see in modern cars are the latest version. Other gadget's technology like broquet, prozone, etc.. was used in WW2. ↡ Advertisement
