hi everyone,

A colleague of mine is purchasing an Ambiente, Silver car, has a malay previous owner.

Tested the car, and found out that driving at 100 kmh, the ambiente is showing 3000 rpm where my classic is at 2500 rpm. Guess it is due to the gear ratio, however, like to confirm.

I believe there is a difference in the engine as well as the gear ratio between the Classic and Ambiente. My guess is the Ambiente has a closer gearing thats why. My auto is running at 3100rpm for 100kmh.

3100rpm at 100kmh sounds reasonable for the auto. The Seat Toledo A is also doing same.

This is why these models average rather high FC, ard 10-11l/100km. Compare this to the Toyota Altis also 1.6 A but engine is turning over at abt 2500rpm at 100kmh and the difference is rather obvious: the av FC is ard 8-9l/100km.

But of course the Contis are more solid in build and have better roadholding.

There is always a price to pay.

another thing for the 3000rpm...

once you drop gear, you has all the torque to overtake...

can go to 130 in a couple of seconds...

WOW....am surprised...it used to be the other way round....almost all my continental cars ride at max 2500rpm at 100kmh!!! and learnt from my friend that they always say that my has been under rated.

Around there lah bro.3000-3100rpm not much diff also. I seem to see the needle in between the 3000 and 3100rpm range at 100kmh. Not every car is exactly the same although same make. My previous lancer at 100kmh is 2600rpm while my friends ride is 2500rpm. Exactly the same make 1.6litre. Maybe different year/batch?. [:/]

The lower the rpm, the better - more economical. But also not necessarily so. The car could be more powerful

Eg. At 100km/h rpm for BMW 735i is just over 2000rpm.

My Superb can also at ~1.9k-2k at 100km/h lei... [;)]

Actually it depends on no. of auto gear in come with the car. Most auto car only can support to 4th gear (like Cefiro, Camry). For those who can support 5th gear, the rpm will be ~2k at 100km/h. I heard Japan had already launched their 7th gear Odyssey!!!

hi,

What you said is true to some extend, especially in F1 cars, where rpm is about 19,000 and they consumed 3 litres for 4 to 5 km, depending on circuits. RPM is a factor but not an element. On the other hand, Alfa 164TS, Porsche 911 C2, Ferrari 328GTBi (my old cars) travels at 100kmh with 1900 rpm with Fuel Consumption of 7, 6 and 5 km per litres, respectively. It is the Specific Fuel Consumption that determines the Fuel Consumption that we called it, ie. the amount of fuel required to push/pull the car in the combustion chamber, and of course driving methods, power to weight ratio etc.

Yours slightly better. Mine is confirm 3100rpm at 100kmh, just checked it last night. Thats why I always travel around 80-90kmh only. Petrol expensive leh! [:p]

Actually one good point is that we pick up speed much faster than those cars who cruise on low rpm. Our octy can hit 140-150 quite easily if you noticed. [sly] Think of the bright side.
