Rust Proofing: An Unnecessary Cost

I heard nowadays new cars are made with materials that are anti-corrosive in nature. So what's the point of sending the car in for those periodic rust proof coating / re-coating?? The car's coe expires in 10yrs and more likely than not, we would have sold it or scrapped it in 5yrs time. My bro has a Nissan Sunny for 8yrs, he hasn't been to a rust proofing agent once, and its still rust free to this day. Anyone's view different from mine?

u will need to check. according to some manufacturers, they uses galvanized steel which will oxidize and this process slows down rusting.

in other cases, they added a form of aluminized spray which has similar function.

if poor grades of galvanized steel r used, then u may hv a problem.

i feel the problem is not so much of the undercarriage but the inside of the doors. cos if u hv a glass tat winds up/ down. water does seeps in and water does leak out thru weep holes. i've seen them when i strip off the door for soundproofing.

do u know eg tat Grade 306 stainless steel will rust? check out those HDB railings. a tiny scratch n they rust. better grade 316 will not rust.

You are right on the nail head - yes very few nowadays send their cars for undercarriage coating unless you are staying in countires where there is heavy snow ( salt water is spray on the road during winter to clear the snow) or near the dead sea.

More and more car manufacturers are moving towards aluminum chasis - I understand Volvo is the leader.

i am not sure what steel my lx corolla is maded of, checked the specs but nothing mentioned there... does anyone know??

i used to own a hyundai elantra that kept sending me 6monthly appointment letters for tuf-kote anti-rust maintenance, costs $55 .. after 1 session i had to bear with an over powering kerosene smell in my car for at least 2 weeks [dizzy] .... can get high already... of cos i avoided going there again, and now i find out that it is probably really a gimmick that i was suckered into it [thumbsdown]

Thanks for all your replies!

I just wonder if anyone here has a car that is less than 10yrs, who has never sent it for rust proof treatment once, and has rust problems now. If not, I guess it does prove my point! [sweatdrop] cheers!
