Wiredchaos Neutral Newbie June 7, 2005 Share June 7, 2005 Hi folks, Got a novice question tat i will like to ask... HEhehhe During my last 80K service at Borneo Motors, the sales person told me tat i need to replace my water Pump Pulley and belt at the costs at ard $300 plus to $400. During tat time im already quite broke then i said i would like to KIV first but the truth is i would like to chk out the prices from workshops outside . Since im a total idiot to car mechanics and stuff. Is replacing the water pump pulley and belt a serious matter ?. I dunno wat does the water pump pulley does but i think the slight noise im experiencing when the car is idling does come from the belt or something? Is the price of $300-$400 expensive for such replacements? And what are the workshops outside charging for replacing these parts and ideally where could i get it done ? Thnks in advance for any valuable advise tat are to be given. ↡ Advertisement
Furrynadz 5th Gear June 7, 2005 Share June 7, 2005 around there inclusive labour if water pump break down, ur engine overheat = dmg, or need overhaul if belt snap, prepare to overhaul overhaul costs 2k+ if ur pistons went out of shape to sum it up, yes its a serious matter, this is the most important component other than brake pads and tyres

Elfenstar 3rd Gear June 7, 2005 Share June 7, 2005 Since im a total idiot to car mechanics and stuff. Is replacing the water pump pulley and belt a serious matter ?. Yes it is a serious matter. Like everyone else has said it can lead to serious engine damage. But only if you keep driving when the car is overheating because you don't notice the temp gauge! If you notice it on time it will be fine, if it takes a while then prolly your head gasket will need a change, if longer than that then goodluck with the rebuild costs. You change these to ensure that the engine cooling system will not fail. Don't worry abt the water pump belt breaking as it on its own will not be of any harm as opposed to the timing belt in an interference engine. My suggestion is change them and all the other belts when you change your timing belt (and also your alternator if its on its way out). It will save you heaps on the labour costs. Yeobh 4th Gear June 8, 2005 Share June 8, 2005 Some engine water pump are driven by the timing belt .Once you rpelace the timing belt you have to also replace the water pump, belt tensioner and tensioner bearings. Doing on piecemeal basis will cause more headache later on and burnt a big hole in your pocket. For interference engine e.g Honda, a broken timing belt can cause serious damage to the valves , cylinder head and for more serious cases , the pistons and con-rods
