All also have 5 or 6 cables...... Just wondering if its worth the extra $$. Thx for any feedback. rgds ↡ Advertisement
Saaber Neutral Newbie December 23, 2002 Share December 23, 2002 It is all the same.... correct gauge copper wire and good connector will do the same job as the branded one....
Max1218 1st Gear December 23, 2002 Share December 23, 2002 hey bro.........the effective is the same one....... good conductivity cables and plate is wat u need..of course the points as well......
Assassin Clutched December 23, 2002 Share December 23, 2002 IMHO, no matter whether it is branded or not or what price it is.... what's important is the type of cable used [material, conductivity/resistance level etc] and the connectors used as well as what are the points grounded that make a difference. Just me 2 cents....
Koolaba 1st Gear December 23, 2002 Share December 23, 2002 Just curious, who quoted u $160 for groudning? IMO, there's little difference in the types of cables used. What u need is 8AWG and 4AWG thick copper cables (those used in audio power cables) to do the job. FYI, if u buy 100m of 8AWG in bulk (red insulation, unbranded ones), it costs $70 ie 70 cents per metre. At SLS Daichi, u can get Audiobahn 8AWG cables, it costs $3-4/m. I suppose the $45 grounding job is by Jimmy. It's worth the money considering tt the laobur and materials like cables, connectors, heat sleeves have been factored into the costing. As for the $160 job, I suppose those cables are either imported or that somebody is using super exotic cables for grouding
Johnniboy Clutched December 23, 2002 Share December 23, 2002 I think the $160 is refering using the brand Pivot from Japan. Checked their website, they are selling $9800 yen in Japan. http://www.the-pivot.co.jp/pages/index2_E.html
Koolaba 1st Gear December 23, 2002 Share December 23, 2002 Dun need to spend so much on the cables. As long as the thickness is there, they'll perform the same funciton. Jimmy's $45 grounding services...good value for $
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie December 23, 2002 Share December 23, 2002 (edited) Well those $160 cables are probably fancy colored plus connectors are all pre-crimped in a nice fancy package. It's how the buyer values the product's presentation that makes it cost more I guess Cheapest AWG8 wires I know cost $2.30 per meter if bought in a roll of 50m (DavJones in SLT), then connectors are around $0.20-$0.60 each plus a crimping tool for $4, how much you think the entire exercise actually cost? That's why I can do some DIY grounding for some of the bros here for $12-$20 (for hobby lah) depending on the length of cable run. Too bad that's all in the past now Edited December 23, 2002 by Turbobrick
Staloy Neutral Newbie December 24, 2002 Author Share December 24, 2002 Thank you all very much for the information provided. I got the prices from a few sources.... there was 45, 90, 120, 160..... of course the more exp ones claim theres was this and that...... Well, looks like in this case, it is not the $$ that counts....
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie December 24, 2002 Share December 24, 2002 Well you must consider how much you think the labor is worth and make your decision then
Liang Neutral Newbie December 25, 2002 Share December 25, 2002 How do you know which points are the ones for grounding? Are they specially marked (I don't think this would be the case) or you go by experience, 'tikam' or 'gut feel'? I suppose if it was grounded wrongly, you can damage the engine? Turbobrick Neutral Newbie December 26, 2002 Share December 26, 2002 (edited) Few common points to note are the alternator mounting bracket (important!), ground points can also be traced from connectors on the chassis inside the engine bay. Check out my brief grounding example here: http://www.mycarforum.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=92375#92375 Edited December 26, 2002 by Turbobrick

Madarmour Neutral Newbie December 27, 2002 Share December 27, 2002 Beware of a black magic called 'loop currents'. May make things worse instead of better. I think all points should br grounded in parallel, not series. Can anyone confirm this?

Turbobrick Neutral Newbie December 28, 2002 Share December 28, 2002 Bro, my tools in the US comes in a set. The crimping tool I mentioned is in SG and normal ones that can be gotten at any hardware store. The AWG8 cable connectors still can be crimped with a 5.5 crimping tool, only the AWG4 thick cables needs a jumbo crimper to mash the connector in.
