Apollo 1st Gear May 15, 2005 Share May 15, 2005 polish is slightly abrasive. think of it as a toner for skin. sealant as foundation and wax as powder. claybar as in skin cleaner...
Gen2 Neutral Newbie May 15, 2005 Share May 15, 2005 Maybe you can take a look at this web site, it should give you a pretty good idea what you are looking for. http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthrea...p?threadid=3117
Ahhuat 1st Gear May 15, 2005 Share May 15, 2005 polishes are usually abrasives that takes away the oxide on ur paint to reveal a fresh layer of paint. You then apply a wax which forms a film over the newly revealed paint to protect it and give it a good shine. Therefore, they are different.

Linus Clutched May 15, 2005 Share May 15, 2005 not say polish no good. each has its own function. as for the type of detailing pdts, u can refer to the detailing folder for some of prefered pdts as used by the fellow MCFers.
Apollo 1st Gear May 15, 2005 Share May 15, 2005 becos u r noob, for doing it on a dark ride, always remember to read up instructions on www.autopia-carcare.com also, make sure the products u choose r for dark color cars n SWIRL-FREE or b prepared to b disappointed. new clean cloth r necessary. for cotton cloth (stockingnette) try buying fr paint shops, cos it is cheaper. Linus Clutched May 15, 2005 Share May 15, 2005 personally, i would recommend the following coz i myself is having a black ride. 1) swirl mark remover (SMR) - 3M 2) sealant - hi-glaze99 (blue color tub bottle) 3) wax and other pdts - soft99 (their sealant oso not bad, juz apply and wipe off. no need buffing) if u have stubborn stains like bird poo or very fine stratches, swirl mark remover can help to solve the prob. i have tried turtle wax SMR but still prefer 3M's. hope this helps. Ahhuat 1st Gear May 15, 2005 Share May 15, 2005 (edited) Not really. From what I know, car polishes removes the oxidised layer of paint, i.e. the dull paint. Lots of materials oxidise, like brass for instance. It comes from reacting with the air. It dulls it. We remove it and viola, a fresh layer appears. But that layer oxidises as well. To retard oxidisation, we put a layer of wax or sealant over it to slow the oxidisation process. Sorta puts a gloss film over the paint. Therefore, I think both should be done. I normally wash, polish, then wax/seal. I think that mere waxing just puts a layer over oxidised paint. What good would that do? Kaiserdome 1st Gear May 15, 2005 Share May 15, 2005 Yep bottomline is waxing requires surface preparation like claying, swirl removing and polishing

Gen2 Neutral Newbie May 15, 2005 Share May 15, 2005 If you are still pretty new to the detailing 'hobby', than I suggest that you should go for the 1 step product like, AIO, Meguiar's ColorX, Cleaner Wax or Mother's Cleaner Wax. Until you are quite sure with what you are trying to achieve, than you can consider doing those multiple steps process like, washing -> claying -> washing -> abbrasive polishing -> pure polishing -> sealent -> waxing. This is where all the real 'fun' starts to come in when you start to mix and match products trying to achieve the kind of look you want for your car. Linus Clutched May 16, 2005 Share May 16, 2005 take for example, hi-glaze99 sealant. u can either apply and then buff off or pour one cap onto water. can use it when u wash car. tts the easy way out if u dun like the hassle and apply and buff method. for soft99 pdts, can visit autobacs, stamford, the usual car accessories shops to get. make a search in the Search option for more soft99 pdts. good luck. Tien Neutral Newbie May 16, 2005 Share May 16, 2005 it all depend on how much a perfectionist you are. most polishes these days contain wax (eg. einszett Metallic Polish Wax which is a polish with carnauba wax), so they give your car a nice shine after polish. for most ppl, this is enough... if you want more shine, then you should add on a layer of wax after you are done polishing. to have a better idea, check out einszett Metallic Polish Wax at zedott.com
Linus Clutched May 16, 2005 Share May 16, 2005 if u wan shine and lazy to DIY, can pay pro groomer to do it. ↡ Advertisement
