Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 3, 2002 Share April 3, 2002 Why does the F1 cars have such small wheels and fat profile tires? I tot low profile tires with large wheels are essential for max cornering stability? Could it be such that to slow those rocket cars down???? ↡ Advertisement
Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie April 3, 2002 Share April 3, 2002 Hi! there, TB, Probably it's to prevent damage to the wheels during acceleration, fat tyres to dampen it. Fat tyres good for putting bigger brand name. You want some 90 series tyres? Can get it from India. Rgds Paul Yong
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 4, 2002 Author Share April 4, 2002 Hi Paul, for one I know are the US dragster with big fat high profile tires that twist on acceleration to prevent the tires from blowing up with their rocket acceleration! 90 series profile? Even SUVs don't need them!
Magfocus 5th Gear April 4, 2002 Share April 4, 2002 (edited) 90 series profile?? You wouldnt need any suspension then! Edited April 4, 2002 by Magfocus
Madarmour Neutral Newbie April 4, 2002 Share April 4, 2002 F1 cars - 13" rims! WRC cars - 15" rims! Why are we still looking for bigger rims?!!
Davey Neutral Newbie April 4, 2002 Share April 4, 2002 Yeah man, seen those tyres on the US Drag Races. The huge tyre changes from a normal cylindrical tyre shape to a "donut" shape due to the centrifugal force spinning them around. Dunno why is it designed like this cos although the donut shape creates a larger rolling diameter but results on lesser rubber contact with the ground ... should have some internal structure to hold the tyre in shape. Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie April 4, 2002 Share April 4, 2002 Hi! there, Magfocus, If you drive in India, you'd definitely need 90 series tyres. The road hump over there, about a foot high, and they're called speed break. Rgds Paul Yong
Magfocus 5th Gear April 4, 2002 Share April 4, 2002 Over a foot high??! No s**t man They sure break your speed!!
Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie April 4, 2002 Share April 4, 2002 Ha! ha! ha! You should've seen the way my Indian friends were screaming to warn me before I went through at 90kmh. That was when I decided that we weren't going anywhere soon, so I took over the drive. Rgds Paul Yong
Magfocus 5th Gear April 4, 2002 Share April 4, 2002 You mean you went thru a speed hump about a foot high at 90kmh???!!
Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie April 4, 2002 Share April 4, 2002 Hi! there, Magfocus, That's because it's the top speed of the car. A 40 year old designed Ambasssador, running a diesel engine. It has very good suspension travel, bouncy, damn shiok around the bends at top speed. But when they decide to kick me out of the driver's seat, it's my turn to turn white. Magfocus 5th Gear April 4, 2002 Share April 4, 2002 Yup have to agree with that! When you are the one driving, you dont feel the 'danger', but when you are the passenger, well that a different story!
Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie April 4, 2002 Share April 4, 2002 Hi! there, Magfocus. The Indians have never driven like I do, so, after watching me do it, that was the first time they are sweeping the corners at top speed. After that, I wasn't allowed to drive again, so I took to the Enfield m/cycle that they had. Rgds Paul Yong
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 4, 2002 Author Share April 4, 2002 Why 17" - 19" wheels??? Because we want to be like BTCC or JDCC mah

Seahorse88 Neutral Newbie April 5, 2002 Share April 5, 2002 This is a requirement by FIA, here is an extract of it: 12.4 Wheel Dimension 12.4.1 Complete wheel width must lie between 305 and 355 mm when fitted to the front of the car and between 365 and 380 mm when fitted to the rear. 12.4.2 Complete wheel diameter must not exceeded 660 mm when fitted with dry weather tyres or 670 mm when fitted with wet weather tyres. 12.4.3 Complete wheel width and diameter will be measured horizontally at axle height when fitted with new tyres inflated to 1.4 bar. 12.4.4 Wheel bead diameter must lie between 328 and 332 mm. Well, it still doesn't answer your question, maybe, like you said, it is introduced to curb speed like the 4 grooves on tyres instead of sleek. Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 5, 2002 Author Share April 5, 2002 Wow! Great specs, thanks bro FIA is really strict, but one thing I don't get is why they don't introduce adding weights to the winner the previous race to promote even competition?
Seahorse88 Neutral Newbie April 5, 2002 Share April 5, 2002 Sorry bro, don't quite get what you mean by adding weight? Where to add? Does it happen in other formulae, likr NASCAR or CART?? A bit suaku here. Anyway, F1 teams spend huge amount of $$ in research of advance materials in order to achieve lightest body/engine weight. Adding wieght to the car will be very hard on them to say the least. Yeh, why didn't FIA use it as a penalty for driver who cause "avaidable accident", say by asking them to carry 2 bags of royal umbrella rice in the cockpit . ↡ Advertisement
