the 0W40 i'm talking about is the brand new US formulation... the one sold in the petrol kiosk is either 10W40 (or 5W40, i forgot) or 15W50 weight oil...

the one sold in the kiosks are too thick for our new cars anyways... unless TC car lah...

the new SM requirements dictate that less ZDDP be used as compared to SL requirements... i suppose this is to meet engine oil requirements of future engines that have more advanced technology to rely lesser on engine oil additives to provide lube functions...

But if the mobil gold the rating is 0w40 lei. I have the bottle with me . And the rating is mobil 1 gold 0w40 rating lei. If you are talking about the other mobil 1 silver fully syn is 5w50 oil. The bottle is gold color one . The rating is 0w40. It can't be wrong man. This engine oil is good man. The engine feels much smoother

As you know ah, SM has lower ZDDP and antiwear additives at all levels AND the oil standard GF4 is damn tough. Some people have called this SM/GF4 standard suicidal. Reports are still coming. So even suggested putting in a bit more antiwear additives to bring it back to SL standard. If you use M1 SM/GF4, please tell us the results. Thanks for being part of an experiment. sly.gif

Less additives also mean less metalic ash deposit level which i suppose will be better for some oil burning engine. I wonder if they are trying to get it below 1% ash

Cannot lah! The additives are still needed. Oil cannot do it alone. Terry did say that there is this OTC additive that is basically overbased calcium. Generated the lowest wear he has ever seen. Low until nothing. Cannot do away with antiwear additives.

I do understand that why diesel grade/API approve engine oil are not really recommended for petrol engine are because of the increase additive level (metallic ash) which may not be optimal for combustion chamber cleanliness, cause plugs deposit, maybe?

Yeah, but copper plugs are the most common around. You have to change them out every 10-15k. What deposit? Thrown away together with the old plugs already! laugh.gif

Neutral Newbie

Giant Marina square is having offer for 3 grades (0w40, 5w30 & 10w30) of Mobil 1 engine oil. Each bottle is selling at $9.30, same price for all 3 grades.

Just bought 8 bottles of the 10w30 today. Notice that for 10w30 grade, 2 different standard found, one is Ilsac GF4 Api SM, Sl/CF while the other is only API SL/CF.
