why u never ask "why singaporeans like SUVs?" ... [:/][:/][:/]

Me like SUVs [inlove] becos they are usually huge and becos if its size, some jerks on the road will think twice before they try to be funny... [smash]

Also, I saw in a documentary that in the event of an accident, passengers in an SUV are likely to survive/hurt lesser than people in a normal sedan. [thumbsup]

Of course, the shortcomings are that it consumes petrol like crazy, and that you definitely can't race in that thing... anyway, I am no racer [;)]

Conclusion, I love SUVs but I won't buy it here in SG becos COE + high petrol price + road tax = [knife]

I have fetish for estates versions of saloon cars. [inlove]

Hatch - not much space

Saloon - common

SUVS/MPVS - Too Big

Sports car - no money to buy

[nod] Estates - Neither Here nor there [laugh][sly] sweeet

Why Europeans Love hatchback?

Most compact or mid-size cars are design to be hatchback initially, so a sedan will look out of place for some Europeans.

Some European countries road condition favor H/B more, Spain & Greece, u can park your car almost anywhere on the road.... too crowded and lack of parking space. France & Italy, imagine how narrow are some of the roads?

They conceive H/B has got more loading space as it is more versatile like a S/W.

H/B are equally safe as sedan or better, car makers need to spend more money in R&D in safety as H/B design and Sedan design different.

It's their tradition to own hatch, just like asian mind set is car with a boot.

Why Singaporeans love Sedan more than H/B?

Bigger boot space, a more complete car.

H/B always associate with "small", S'porean want "big car". Eg, most people will regard a Golf as small and Bora as a "big car", i use this as example to my friend and he still insist that the Bora is a big car while a Golf is a small car... tried to explain to him cabin space is the same but he still cannot accept. Some may think my Daewoo Nexia is a small car as it's a H/B (but car is abt 4.2m, longer than Matrix, wait till u see the Racer II Sedan, 4.4m) and they say the Racer II is a big car.

Usually traditionally view as a "budget" alternative.

More expensive than Sedan counterpart in most cases.

Now S'poreans wanted a MPV even though it's a Giant H/B or a mini Van cause :

1. it seats 7 usually

2. it's the trend now (S'poreans are copy cats)

3. it's also prestigeous as everyone know it's not really cheap.

4. it looks big but most MPV are shorter than most 2L sedan.

Depends on the car. For luxury cars, I'll definitely go for sedans. For smaller fun cars, e.g. Latio, I'll definitely go for the hatch version.

are there any luxury HBs?

talking abt mpvs, sometimes i find it such a joke

some mpvs looked almost like vans, i wud rather save the money by buying a van instead

some mpvs are 90% of the time underutilised. 8 seater running with 1 person (ie driver) in its load 90% of the time. pay extra just for the weekend convenience of putting in the maid, children or parents in the same car.

why not save the money, buy a normal sedan or hb and during weekend when need to pick up extra pple, just book a cab loh.....saves much more money.

hmm... HB are getting more accepted these days i thot... see more and more on the roads. Guess also cos HB now looks nicer than those in past. HB doesnt realli mean small boot space anymore too. Well... i purposely got a HB cos want to be different from the majority who drive the too-often-seem sedan... maybe cos young n no family yet... hmm.. might switch to sedan next time when i'm old n got family... true....which is what i use to counter another person's argument that sedan can carry more things.....sometimes its like the shape of the space matters as much as the actualy dimension. for a fact i always prefer a house with squarish or rectangular layout as compared to roundish even if the area of the roundish house is bigger.

suvs is another mystery...i mean the space wise it doesn't win. the handling wise, it sucks. the fuel consumption should be a turn off among practical singaporean. the high seating arrangement by itself doesn't seem to warrant the popularity of the suv.

I think its more of a herd instinct. As if people will drive up Bukit Timah hill during the weekends [lipsrsealed] oops.... I will get hantam.

About MPVs and SUVs, especially SUVs where you get only about 8 Km per litre FC.

They are under untilised. During the weekdays, you usually only see only one person in these vehicles. Cathay Pacific is restricting 2 flights per month for their crew who flies from HK to NY over the north pole. The ozone layer is depleted over there and frequent travellers over that area will get excess comic radiation which cause cancer.

This is because of the explosion of SUVs/MPVs/CRVs all over the world. They are very harmful to the environment and the next generation will suffer for it.

Turbocharged
Hatch back seems more popular in europe

I buy sedan because

1) bigger. More metal for the money

2) can sit more people comfortably

3) more boot space.

4) If hanky panky, can do behind easily. I tried hanky panky on a HB before, wah ...cannot la..too cramp.

wah this thing abt cathay, where did u get the info from?

well, i nvr believe market forces can efficiently or effectively distribute resources. now the car makers are happily selling suvs and mpvs......a few decades down the road, many others will suffer from the ozone depletion.

Actually SUV with high CG, so when in accident, when the car spin, SUV will likely overturn.

so i say, Singaporean are just copy cats.... if u have, i also must have...

I got bunch of friends when we study together said that buying a car is a waste of money and rather take public transport, as for me, i just tell them i will buy a car when i start working... I called them, the "practical" people..... now all them them buy their own cars.... it's a kind of materialistical kind of human behaviour that cannot be deny.

I think in the next 10 yrs, to own a car is like to own a handphone now, people will not be happy just to settle down with a normal basic Jap/Korean car.... maybe 1.6 is a min requirement for them to have some "shine" on their face, MPV will be selling like what the 1.6 saloon cars been selling now.... 1.3 to 1.5 and below is consider as real budget cars.... smaller than that is like owning a Nokia 3210 based on today's standard...
