Help needed : Offset explanation

could any of you experts explain what offset means?

 

my offset is 18 thereabouts what does this mean? how does one measure offset.

 

for a rim with an offset of 35 how does adding a spacer help in making the offset match that of my car?

but say u upgrade fr 14" to 17" rim, the width fo the rim would defintely be wider thus do u still retain the same offset ?????

May need to get a rim with smaller offset or risk scrubbing the inner wall, also have to make sure it doesn't scrub the arch. That's the risk of fitting a rim 3 sizes bigger.
