Hi guys, can the many chevy bros here help me to solve this puzzle.

Its said that optra auto has a "hold" mode, wat exactly is that, a clutchless manual transmission?

Thanks!! [sunny]

Hold button is used to hold the gear in place and not change.

Normally,

If your stick is in "1", it will forever remain at 1st gear.

If your stick is in "2", it will toggle between 1st and 2nd gear. (That means, if you move off from stationary, it will go 1st gear, then change to 2nd and stay there, no matter how hard you rev the engine.)

if your stick is in "D4", it will be fully auto between 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear.

Now, if you press the hold button, it will "lock" into only 1 gear.

If your stick is in "1" , it will forever be in 1st gear. No diff from above.

If your stick is in "2", it will always be in 2nd gear, never go down to 1st, even if you move off from a stationary.

If your stick is in "D4", it will always be in 3rd gear, never go down or up.

Now, this hold button is useful usually when you move on from slippery position (sand, water, etc). It will actually control the power to the wheel such that it will not have wheel spin. Unless you are totally in oil or what.

Try the hold button when putting stick in "D4".. when you press the accelerator, you do not feel the jerk of 1st and 2nd gear, but move off very slowly.. same as you trying to drive off from stationary, in 3rd gear, and controlling your clutch so that the engine doesn't stall.

Also can be used if you wanna overtake, press the hold button and it will drop from 4th to 3rd gear.. But of course, you don't actually need to do that. Just press the accelerator hard and it will usually kick-down to lower gear and rev hard automatically.

i drive a 323, got HOLD mode too. i think when u engage HOLD mode, ur auto gear will not go beyond 3rd gear to give u more torque.. good for overtaking, bad for pocket [sweatdrop]

Slightly different from OD.

OD = 1st to 3rd gear only. No 4th gear. (or 5th, for those A/T with 5 gears)

Hold = Can engage ONLY specific gear, like I mentioned in my post.

To see the difference :

(1) Stop at red light. Complete stop

(2) Engage HOLD / OD.

(3) Drive off.. Do you feel the car changing from 1st gear to 2nd gear to 3rd gear ?

If YES -> Different from Chevy HOLD mode.

For Chevy Optra HOLD mode, doing the above you will see the Chevy move off STARTING from the 3rd gear. You will hear engine rev quite high, but car move quite slowly. and then pick up speed. There is NO changing of gears from 1 to 2 to 3.

so it works tat way, now i truly understands. Thanks, tat was really a very comprehensive explaination. [scholar]

im researching though these 2 particular cars currently, bet optra and lancer, tts why this particular qns came up.

So i suppose u must be driving a optra(A)? Also i have seen/heard pple commenting abt optra relatively slower pick-up? how true is it??

Haha.. Well, maybe if you put on the track, Optra might have slower pickup if every other driver floors it. But trust me, on normal roads and slipway into the expressway, pick up is more than enough, if you are willing to press the accelerator.

Yeah, in most gears, OD means dropping down to gears that are higher than 1.0 ratio (usually 3rd gear, some times 4th).

But then, flooring the accelerator will also cause the ECU to do the same, I guess.. Maybe just slight difference.

For Vios, the "OD" button acts like a fifth gear whereby the engine will change down to third gear and proceed until redline.

"OD" is used to toggle highest gear on/off only, what 5th gear? [dizzy]
