The following extracted from here: http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/

http://www.acea.be/"The ACEA standards are prefixed with a 'G' for petrol engines and a 'D' or 'PD' for diesel. Coupled with this are numerous approvals by car manufacturers which many oil containers sport with pride. ACEA replaced CCMC in 1996 primarily to allow for greater read-across in test programs (eg. for viscosity, viscosity modifiers and base oil). The CCMC specifications were G (1 to 5) for gasoline, D (1 to 5) or heavy duty diesel and PD1 and PD2 for passenger car diesel. ACEA though have a slightly different nomenclature they can be summarised as A for petrol, B for passenger car diesel and E for heavy duty diesel. The ACEA grades may also be followed by the year of issue which will be either '96, '98 (current) but coming soon is 2000.

Full ACEA specs are:

  • A1 Fuel Economy Petrol
  • A2 Standard performance level
  • A3 High performance and / or extended drain
  • B1 Fuel Economy diesel
  • B2 Standard performance level
  • B3 High performance and / or extended drain
  • B4 For direct injection passenger car diesel engines
  • E1 Non-turbo charged light duty diesel
  • E2 Standard performance level
  • E3 High performance extended drain
  • E4 Higher performance and longer extended drain
  • E5 (1999) High performance / long drain plus American/API performances. - This is ACEAs first attempt at a global spec. "

There are many ACEA A3-02 rated oils around. FYI, the new A3 standard is in year 2002 which explains the 02 behind. So be careful. Some oil say A3 but in actual fact it could be A3-98. The trick is to see the infamous MB 229.3 specification. MB 229.3 is based on ACEA A3-02. So if you look into a bottle and see ACEA A3 plus MB 229.3 rating. Confirm the oil is ACEA A3-02. ACEA A3-02 oils are usually 5W40 or 0W40 with the exception for Castrol SLX-A3

Oil in the market I know with ACEA A3-02:

Castrol SLX-A3 0W30 (The one with Synthetic Intelligence)

M1 Gold Supersyn 0W40

Conoco Syncon 5W40

BP Visco 7000 0W40

cxxxxxe Triple R 5W40 (New package curved bottle, old angular bottle is A3-98 rated).

Just dump in Delvac MX yesterday. But I don't understand the ACEA rating for Delvac MX.....

Its rated A2, B3, B4, E3 & E5. How come its considered extended drain for diesel engine but not for gasoline engine?confused.gif

Should be OK. Its a 5W40 but rated SJ. I doubt your mileage would have hit more than 400k. You can actually safely use a 30wt oil. Consider that next time.

Tot I saw on the label that its SL sweatdrop.gif. Will check that out when I get home...

400K? My current mileage is only 58+K ... quite low...laugh.gif

Intended to follow ur advice to switch to 5W40 and later to 5W30. Just want to monitor any change in FC and engine smoothness.

Currently using Castrol RS and to my horror, it is actually 10W50! crazy.gif

Thank you very much for bringing in your knowledge on Engine Oil to this forum! thumbsup.gifangel.gif

The US formulation selling in Carrefour that is GM4718 rated for Corvette use? If it is, all those who bought it at 69.90 for 6qt tanchiak already! This is better than the sucky M1 Supersyn Gold 0W40.

Normal drain is 10k km. Extended drain is >15k km

You mean when using Delvac MX in gasoline engine, its good for 10k km. But when using the same oil in a diesel engine can last for 15k km? Does this mean that gasoline engine is more 'severe' than diesel engine?confused.gif

But the thing is, gasolines usually see higher RPM than diesels. It is still mineral oil so being on a 10k OCI is safer. Dunno how they come to that conclusion but most of the US guys will not use mineral 15W40 HDEO to 15k in gasolines. At 10k, it produces very good wear results.
