Blue850r Clutched November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 Came across those 2 cars on the Ford booth. After looking into their engine specs, I was amazed by their low output and yet carrying the ST badge which meant to have some performance dial in. Mondeo ST220 - 3L only 220bhp where Ford has their own Duratec 3L 240bhp used in the Jaguar S type family sedan. Focus ST170 - 2L only 173bhp with torque 198N-m . BMW 318i valvetronic 200N-m torque and Merc 200K has 163bhp and 235N-m. So the ST170 may not out run even the Merc on the highway. Wrxblue 1st Gear November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 Yea. and guess what one of sales executive told me when I asked her whether is it for sale.... ST 170 - too powerful for our roads - LTA dont approved so cannot sell. ST220 - too expensive - no potential in singapore so cannot sell... what kind of excuses is that...... Luckcent 4th Gear November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 Its not an excuse, they just do not know what they are talking about. What rubbish.
Blue850r Clutched November 23, 2002 Author Share November 23, 2002 I think these sales people at Regent Motors knew that those 2 cars are wash out on performance and pricing is high. Focus ST170 at 173bhp can't be that powerful. LTA can allow WRX and EVos on the road, what's the problem with ST170. Even the Mini cooper S is about the same power from a 1.6L engine. Top speed 218km/h. Unladen ~1395kg. 7.2 litres/100km. The Merc C200K (2litres) is 230Nm (2500-4800rpm), 163bhp @ 5300rpm, and 9.7secs on paper. Top speed 227km.h. Unladen ~1490kg. 13.8 litres/100km. Guyver 1st Gear November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 What rubbish is that?? then why would LTA allow Ferrari to be sold?? So does that mean that ST170 is more powerful than Ferrari?? ST220 too expensive?? more expensive than Ferrari?? Think probably a better answer would be perhaps "Due to the nature of S'pore market, after doing the market research... it's not viable to market this 2 model in S'pore.".... makes more sense right?? Wrxblue 1st Gear November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 at the end of the day, local car distributors are looking at profits lah.....who cares about customer's needs..... With economical conditions like now, dont think they dare to be so advantureous!!!! but looking at the month to month sales of marques and model...Ford is doing very well relative to others.... Take at Yr 2002 LTA new car registration record....You will be surprise...!!!! car registration 2002.pdf
Guyver 1st Gear November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 I mean... the MD ask the guy to do market analysis and propose the model to bring in.... so it's a $$ driven thingy... and S'pore market is so small... if it doesn't make $$.... why bring in? .. some car manufacturer don't even want to manufacture cars that need to meet some requirement for S'pore... like the last case i heard of something like the antenna in windscreen disrupt ERP signal.... that case. Vtim 3rd Gear November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 (edited) The price (OMV) for ST170 & ST220 is too high to be competitive enough The ST170 will cost more than the WRX but with a lower performance So, the SE just give any excuses that RM will not able to bring them in Edited November 23, 2002 by Vtim
Vtim 3rd Gear November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 (edited) If you go to LTA & check the Total Car Cost, you'll know how RM can afford to give 5 years warranty to Mondeo & Focus They make a much higher profit, up front, than most other Jap makes Imagine, the Mondeo's OMV is very close to my Civic but the selling price is a big difference. Guyver 1st Gear November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 That's the sad thing..... pple are so $$ driven that one can become so impersonal... ... like the saying "what good is it for a man to gain the whole world but loses his soul".....
Guyver 1st Gear November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 That's the problem.... the SE is not being truthful.... i mean if u tell the truth frankly.... we can accept what... but lame excuses....
Vtim 3rd Gear November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 Can't really blame the SE, maybe they are just under order's from the Management to come up some excuses My friend, who's an SE (work for RM for almost 30 yrs) say that the OMV is too high to make it competitive to bring them here . Remember the Ford Escort Cosworth Turbo (WRC), it was more than S$200k & the WRX STi cost much lesser
Mondeo Neutral Newbie November 23, 2002 Share November 23, 2002 Stock Cosworth can go above 240km/h, but stock WRX STI doesn't, only 180km/h!! And at highway, Cosworth feels stable above 200km/h, what u think the WRX above 200km/h at highway react?
Jman888 Moderator November 24, 2002 Share November 24, 2002 I asked the saleman at the show if the ST is coming and they said yes! ST170 will be out in early 2003 selling above $100K, i guess it is consider reasonable if it is less than $110K. But the ST170 come in 3-doors only. Mondeo Neutral Newbie November 24, 2002 Share November 24, 2002 Think price should almost same with Clio RS if they really want to import in.
Vtim 3rd Gear November 25, 2002 Share November 25, 2002 Stock Cosworth can go above 240km/h, but stock WRX STI doesn't, only 180km/h!! The 180km/h limit on the STi can be removed As for highspeed (above 240km/h) stability of the STi, I can't answer on that, haven't driven one before Anyone own a STi can comment on that ↡ Advertisement
