Kianbeng Clutched November 17, 2002 Share November 17, 2002 Hi ppl, Hope it's alright to post some questions on Home Theatre System instead of Car theatre System? Recently, I'm quite amazed at how a good audio system can make you feel as if you were in it (ie, in a concert or in a movie itself). For some of the supposedly good audio systems, all the audio reproduction are so realistic....and it just makes me want to buy them , but there's too many choices to make and budget/space constraints..... So, I would like to seek some advise from MCF members or people who knows about such Home Theatre System. For a start, it's for my new 5 room flat. The TV area is a bit small, so I'm only looking at satellite systems. And I have already run 2 thick (but not sure if good) audio cables (silver/copper) from the front thru the top false ceiling to the rear. When I went to Courts, Harvey Norman or Best Denki, I think the best satellite speakers they offer is the 3in1 (DVD, receiver, Amp) JBL system (forgot exact model no.) for $1399. I know that buying separate machines for specific purpose may be better (ie 1 yamaha amp, + 1 panasonic DVD player). Unfortunately, this is where my budget constraint comes in. For those separate components, it's very much more expensive. Furthermore, I may also run into "Combination problems" as mentioned in other earlier recent threads. During the DEMO, I've tried many other audio system. (ie pioneer, panasonic, and jbl of course). With the same DVD or CD, it seems that JBL is obviously the better one. Although the price is $300 more, but it seems like a good buy. But the down side to it is that, for this JBL satellite speakers, it comes with their own proprietary cables which I don't really like. Coz 1) The JBL cable is quite long, (maybe 15-20m? for each rear speaker). But what if it's not enough? Then I need to cut, and join with other cables which I don't think is a good idea. 2) I've already run in a thick audio cable into my false ceiling and not using it seems to be a waste. (but I can use it to pull in the JBL cable by taping the JBL cable to my exisiting cable on 1 end and pull through). Infact, only this JBL satellite speakers comes with a proprietary cable. Other brands or other models of JBL seems to be using normal speaker cables. Any comments on this model if it's good or what should be the ideal way for me to do the cabling. Thanks kianbeng ↡ Advertisement

Kianbeng Clutched November 19, 2002 Author Share November 19, 2002 Assassin, How's the quality of the Sony DAV-S550 system? Is it comparable to the JBL's system that is going for $1399? I think I have seen this sony model already. It's kinda squarish/cubish design. Quite trendy one. But I haven't hear the sound quality yet. kianbeng
Assassin Clutched November 19, 2002 Share November 19, 2002 (edited) Hi KianBeng, I have not tried out the JBL system so I can say much about it. The best way to decide is still to listen to these systems for yourself as different people have different preferences with regards to technical specs/aesthetics/price. Yup, the Sony DAV-S550 is the trendy one...comes in either cube form or the mini 4 feet high "sticks". Personally speaking, I find the bass a bit lacking. However, it is much suited for smaller areas rather than large spaces. So it should be just nice for a living room space. Oh yes, do bring along your own DVD/CD to play on these systems when you test them so that you have something to base on. Cheers Edited November 19, 2002 by Assassin
Andrewtankw 1st Gear November 19, 2002 Share November 19, 2002 Have you considered Computer speakers? Their 5.1 selection is THX approved like the newly launched Creative THX 5.1 550 speakers is going for 500+. No decoder though but for that price, you can easily top up the balance and get a pretty good decoder. The size also fits your requirment as they are cube speakers. So its pretty small. Also another you can consider is the Klipsch 4.1 THX Promedia speakers. Not too bad. Going for 600+ I think. Worth looking into it. Should be better than all the home theater combos from Sony, Panasonic etc... I would defintely go this route. Cheap THX speakers......cool!
Madarmour Neutral Newbie November 19, 2002 Share November 19, 2002 THAT expensive! Didn't realize prices has gone up soooooooo much! Still using my separates bought almost 10 years ago! the only recent hardware being the DVD player. Yamaha AV amp, Pioneer LD, Panasonic DVD, TDC front speakers and Mordaunt-Short centre and rears, Scandyna powered sub. My next upgrade (in a few years time, when prices will hopefully go lower) is the 42" plasma TV.

Gadgeter 2nd Gear November 19, 2002 Share November 19, 2002 (edited) Hmmmm.... Kianbeng, From the manual setup, don't think there is any problem in re-using the cables which is in your false ceiling.. For your reference, the path below is for the manual: http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/HOM/Owner's%...v%206-13-02.pdf As for more info on the JBL system, here's the link. http://www.jbl.com/home/products/product_d...rId=CPP&sCatId= Edited November 19, 2002 by Gadgeter
