Kklim Supercharged January 17, 2005 Share January 17, 2005 Hi folks, Got a crankcase vent filter but am not sure where to stick it in my Matrix. Anyone knows and can send a pix? Also, does it serve the same function as a oil catch tank? Thanks. kk ↡ Advertisement
Victorhoo Neutral Newbie January 17, 2005 Share January 17, 2005 (edited) Should be like this ....but dun blame me if i am wrong....cause i thought that is more of an air filter (see picture) and is totally different with oil catch tank... a oil catch tank is (taken from http://www.vtechware.com/others.htm) : .....When a engine is running, minor internal pressure will be produced in the crankcase. This pressure is generally caused by a minor leakage of combustion gas past through the piston rings, and this is known as blow-by carrying a densely foggy air with oil containment. Oil Catch Tank catches the oil and moisture in the blow-by gas that causes carbon and sludge build-up in the intake system and the engine. It keeps the engine clean even under hard driving conditions..... Any brothers like to comment on this... Multi 3rd Gear January 18, 2005 Share January 18, 2005 What's the main purpose of the Crankcase filter? Pls advice?
Victorhoo Neutral Newbie January 18, 2005 Share January 18, 2005 (edited) easier to breathe....able to draw more air...looks nicer BASICALLY...its just a air filter Edited January 18, 2005 by Victorhoo
Multi 3rd Gear January 18, 2005 Share January 18, 2005 Understand there's a pipe connected to the airhose, so getting more air there shouldn't any problem, right? But if you connect the filter, it taking hot air from the engine bay, doesn't that affect the performance(if any)? Sorry, this is my own thinking...advice pls? Kklim Supercharged January 18, 2005 Author Share January 18, 2005 Hi Victor, Just read your reply. Thanks. I bought a cone filter on Yaho Auctions and the seller gave me the crankcase vent filter FOC. Now in a plastic bag :) kk
Victorhoo Neutral Newbie January 18, 2005 Share January 18, 2005 (edited) you are right to say hot air will decrease perfomance... but i dun think air is drawn into the crankcase...in fact it is to release the pressure from the camshafts... so the return air you see connected back to the air hose is actually reuse air being suck back into the throttle body.Which means even hotter air. Hence by having that it release hot air directly back into the engine bay and not back for combustion. also it prevent your engine oil from being contaminated and "flow" back into crankcase. ...its should be able to release more air...instead of "draw" more air...opps Edited January 18, 2005 by Victorhoo
Victorhoo Neutral Newbie January 18, 2005 Share January 18, 2005 (edited) so actually it does act like the oil catch tank ..minus the oil return lines Edited January 18, 2005 by Victorhoo
Multi 3rd Gear January 18, 2005 Share January 18, 2005 Thank you... I'll be getting one soon...
Multi 3rd Gear January 18, 2005 Share January 18, 2005 But, if fix the filter, what happens to the pipe leading to the air hose? Leave it alone?
Kklim Supercharged January 18, 2005 Author Share January 18, 2005 Victor, Installation-wise, is it just a simple matter of removing the PCV valve, sticking in the crankcase filter where the PCV was, and securing the original air hose with PCV attached to it such that it doesn't dangle? The PCV is a check valve and no engine bay air will enter, right? kk
Victorhoo Neutral Newbie January 18, 2005 Share January 18, 2005 you have to seal up the hole in the main air hose pipe..if not it will be drawing more hot air and dirty air back for combustion..big no no.. just buy a small rubber stopper and plug in and secure with those metal rings.(those have screw built in it..so can turn tight ones..you know right)
Victorhoo Neutral Newbie January 18, 2005 Share January 18, 2005 (edited) hmm.. i dun know...but i rather keep the valve and take out the hose (ok...its confirm...duo not take out the pcv valve and the hose connect to the intake manifold) Edited January 18, 2005 by Victorhoo
Kklim Supercharged January 18, 2005 Author Share January 18, 2005 Can someone help translate the PCV-relevant captions for the pics in http://www.gp2000.com.tw/carshow/hyundai-matrix.htm ? Me no read Chinese (mother tongue: Hokkien; evil stepmother tongue: Chinese). Thanks.
Multi 3rd Gear January 18, 2005 Share January 18, 2005 Are we talking about the same thing...PCV valve or Crankcase Ventilation hose??? Crankcase vent hose is the one with a long pipe leading to the airhose, right? PCV is the one leading to the manifold, right? So, which are we refering to? ↡ Advertisement
