Focusonthis Neutral Newbie January 9, 2005 Share January 9, 2005 Does anyone know what are the symptoms to look out for to know that the belt is worn out? What are the other things necessary to change when changing the timing belt? My milage is now 91,000 +... Hoppe Clutched January 10, 2005 Share January 10, 2005 Think timing belt should be changed every 100K. Since your's 91K, should change... Timing belt shouldn't be that expensive...around $150 I guess. different car, different price. just my 2c.
Seansene 1st Gear January 10, 2005 Share January 10, 2005 Depends on the car. Some are set at 60,000km, some at 100,000km. Surprisingly I found the Focus belt interval to be 120,000km I'll be changing it soon anyway...

Seansene 1st Gear January 10, 2005 Share January 10, 2005 I double-confirmed with the agent. Different belts have different schedules, so we can't lump them all together...
Seansene 1st Gear January 10, 2005 Share January 10, 2005 (edited) Erm... you do it at RM and it's going to cost you big time. I was quoted $700-800, main thing is the labour involved. I'm now at 103k km, so it's next on my to-do list. I can update you on the other details when I get it done... What are the other things necessary to change when changing the timing belt? My milage is now 91,000 +... Is the above costly? Overcomer Neutral Newbie January 10, 2005 Share January 10, 2005 Difficult to see whether belt is at the end of its life, as it can suddenly break. The manufacturer's guide shud be used. Usual is 80-100,000km. Some cars, like the Hyundai Elantra, experienced premature breakage, so safer to change say 10,000km before stated!

What are the other things necessary to change when changing the timing belt? My milage is now 91,000 +... Is the above costly? My Daewoo left 1 yr to scrap also thinking of changing belt but seems pointless... even the "uncle" also advise me no need to change. I am the 4rd owner of the car, i check with starauto and they told me that it was last change at 50k, i acquired the car 3 yrs ago at 120k, now is 210k.... don't know in between 50k and 120k whether got change or not...but the "uncle" said if don't ram and don drive fast...can last quite some time as he said "not so easy to snap". so if just change once at 50k, then car run160k already without changing belt. i am a slow driver... so hope can last, if snap...change car loh... Seansene 1st Gear January 11, 2005 Share January 11, 2005 Yeah, no harm to change early. Especially for interference models, where a belt break will result in a busted engine. Good thing the new Focus uses a timing chain, which doesn't need replacing.
Overcomer Neutral Newbie January 11, 2005 Share January 11, 2005 A belt break will result in costly damage to the engine. However, it's not true that timing chains no need to change; they also wear out, but will not break suddenly. As they wear, they will become noisy, but can still run for some time, no hurry to change, until yr neighbourhood complains, haha! Some new cars are now reverting back to the chains of yesteryear, good retro.
Ohlins Neutral Newbie January 11, 2005 Share January 11, 2005 cam chain does have a tensioner, either hydraulic or fixed. chain suffers from wear and tear. so as the chain wears, the tensioner will take up the slack. tensioner failure is not unheard of......so its not entirely foolproof. belts, being situated externally, are very much easier to service and replace. Treesmaker Clutched January 12, 2005 Share January 12, 2005 There no no signs. Wear cannot be detected by inspection. If the belt fails your valves and pistons will be damaged. Your engine will need a major overhaul. Better not take the risk, change your timing belt at 60,000km intervals (that is 3 years once!)
Sky8807 1st Gear January 12, 2005 Share January 12, 2005 Does anyone know what are the symptoms to look out for to know that the belt is worn out?No symptom What are the other things necessary to change when changing the timing belt? My milage is now 91,000 +... Timing belt, tensioner, maybe water pump or some bearing that are difficult to reach normally. I think 100K is norm for most car, of course u can streach a bit like 10 to 15% at your own calculated risk (manu also give a safety factor of ard 20-30% before failure) Is the above costly? For your ride shd be costly
Gadgeter 2nd Gear January 17, 2005 Share January 17, 2005 When you change your timing belt, you should change the water pump as well.. ↡ Advertisement
