Genie47 1st Gear December 4, 2004 Share December 4, 2004 (edited) No need to buy additives for engine oil. Engine oil by itself is already very well formulated. I suggest you go to www.bobistheoilguy.com and get an oily education there. The forum has a lot of info and not for the faint hearted. Thank you 1st servicing 1K usually car workshop recommend mineral oil for running in. 5K or 10K change, then u can switch to synthetic. but better performance u hv to elaborate and also ur driving pattern. if u stick mostly to urban driving and only ard singapore, w20 oil will b more then sufficient for best economy. if u like to floor the pedal often or does PG regularly or drive to MY regularly, a higher viscosity will b necce to protect the engine. Solar Turbocharged December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 hello guru understand that driving in singapore's hot and start/stop driving condition is refered to as 'severe'. is it still 'safe' to go for the lowest allowed for the car? so far i have been using a grade thicker..
Genie47 1st Gear December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 It's still not severe enough. Wait till you are pulling something like a boat or a trailer. That is really severe. Traffic jams? Nope. It is the RPM that count. Higher RPM, oil thin out, fuel dilution, oil gets whacked. In start stop, oil doesn't get the chance to reach operating temperature. Thin oil allows that. That being said, it gets whacked in the other department. Water, acids and all that. So in stop start conditions, you have shorter OCIs.
Jazz_feb06 Neutral Newbie December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 hi, newbie here i've qns too.. what is the diff between 5W 40W and 5W 50W? I drive jazz..i remembered Kah Mtr used 5W 40W but outside they used 5W 50W for me. can u guys pls enlighten me..thanks
Genie47 1st Gear December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 It is the last number after the W you should pay attention to first. Get yourself an oily education. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the faster it will flow. In city driving like ours, you need thinner oil. I suggest starting with 30 and below. The first number is the "winter" rating. It is not the viscosity when cold. It is just a arbritary rating on how well the oil will flow at a certain cold temperature. Anything 10 and below is good. New cars that are not turbocharged or hauling boats or trailers constantly, use thin oil is good. The newer engines have tolerances that are so tight, you fill in 50wt oil will cause you to lose power.
Yc86 Clutched December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 Will having a higher no.behind (thicker) oil give a higher oil temp? i noticed on 5w30, oil temp seldom hit 100, hangs ard at 94+. lower if cruising.. but on the 15W50, oil temp goes to 100~105 easily. Genie47 1st Gear December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 (edited) Yes. Frictional shear of the fluid produces heat on top of the component friction and combustion heat. Now you know thick oil is bad for a daily driving car. Edited December 15, 2007 by Genie47
Jazz_feb06 Neutral Newbie December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 hi genie, thanks for elaboration...appreciate that. u have mentioned one thing, fill wif 50wt oil will cause lose power. what is the mean? isit pick-up issue? or slight affecting my fuel consumption? btw, can i change back to 5W40 again for my next service?
Genie47 1st Gear December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 (edited) Pickup and fuel economy. If you can, change to 30wt oil. I don't recommend 40wt unless you are driving MB, BMW or VAG car. Even these cars have their specially rated 229.3 0W30 oils that are very good. From you nick, I guess you are driving a Jazz? Use a 5W20 or a 0W20 if you can. The Hondas are made for these oils. Yc86 Clutched December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 mm.. then why is 50w or even 60w used for TC/high revving/track? since it heats up to a higher temp. Mine's gone up to 132degC before with some hard driving Nv tried 30 or 40wt for high rev/load driving b4, only slow drives during run-in..
Jazz_feb06 Neutral Newbie December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 yes it is jazz.. but Kah Motor use Shell 5W 40 for us..becos of too expensive for 40k maintenance so i did it at outside workshop. ok will noted ur advice..will look around 5W20 or 0W20 for my next engine oil. thanks again
Genie47 1st Gear December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 Fuel dilution. Thick oil has a long way to go before they too thin at high heat. So this is suitable for racing. When oil gets too thin, fuel can get washed down with it and destroy it's lubricating properties. In racing, you stop for fuel. Not change oil. However, thin oil is used for qualifying. You want all the horsies to get to pole position.

BTW, can I bring in my own engine oil for the workshop to use when I go for my next servicing? Mine's at KAH... Thanks!! ↡ Advertisement
