Hensony Clutched November 30, 2004 Share November 30, 2004 Is it true that a car with a smaller engine capacity is more fuel efficient? Take the example of Toyota Passo. It comes in 1.0L and 1.3L versions. Given the same configurations except for the engine size, is the 1.0L more fuel efficient than the 1.3L? Please enlighten. ↡ Advertisement
Acemundo Supercharged November 30, 2004 Share November 30, 2004 generally yes...but exceptions does occur whereby for certain car the weight is beyond the optimal range. that's to say if u let the 1.0cc carry a weight heavier than what capacity is meant for then the fuel consumption can be higher. ie over-strained it might consume more petrol? Nine_eleven 2nd Gear November 30, 2004 Share November 30, 2004 fuel efficiency depends on the type of driving u do... a 1 litre car on a highway @ 120kph would prob be using more fuel per km than a 4.3litre lexus at that same speed. but the opposite occurs if ur running ard orchard road doing errands... everything is variable. buy a car that suits your needs... Sotong_kia Neutral Newbie November 30, 2004 Share November 30, 2004 Fuel efficiency and fuel consumption are 2 different things. Imagine I drink water by pouring water from water fountain.. a lot of the water is wasted and flow from the side of my mouth into the drain. I am inefficient. But the amount of water I drink + wasted in one day is still less than the water that an elephant drinks in one day. Efficiency is usually measured by km/l. And can only compare different cars/engines under identical/similar conditions.

I think is more correct to say smaller engine capacity GENERALLY consume less petrol as compared to bigger capacity
Accenture Neutral Newbie November 30, 2004 Share November 30, 2004 yes generally true but a small engine in a heavy car is going to cause you to burn more fuel to get the car moving. There is always an optimal trade off.
Genie47 1st Gear December 1, 2004 Share December 1, 2004 Engine design plays a part and not just the displacement. GM cars with the 1.2L Ecotec derived unit have very poor FC compared to the 1.4L versions.

Porker Turbocharged December 1, 2004 Share December 1, 2004 I think the ratio between FC (km per litre) and the weight of the car is a good guage of the fuel efficiency assuming all other conditions are held constant.

I used to drive a 1.3l corolla but the consumption (km/l) is worst than 1.6l corolla.. because weight:power ratio is high.. The engine has to work harder to get the car moving.. ↡ Advertisement
