Anyone down here knows what is sound stage and the purpose for time alignment?

Pioneer they call it time alignment, alpine they name it time correction. Sony doesn't have this function.

Information from Alpine with regards to Time correction.

" The distance between the listener and the speakers in a car vary widely due to the complex speaker placement. This difference in the distances from the speakers to the listener creates a shift in the sounds image and frequency characteristics. This is caused by time delay between the sound reaching the listener's right versus the left ear.

With time correction feature, it is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closet to the listener. The effectively creates a preception of increased distance for those speakers. The listener can be placed at an equal distance between the left and right speakers for optimum staging."

in a typical home setting, the listener sits abt equi distance between the two speakers, but in a car setting, the main listener, the driver usually, sits off-centered, you are closer to the right hand side speakers. As such the sound from the right hand side speakers reaches you a few micro seconds before the sound from the left hand speakers, thus potentially messing up with how the music sounds. time alignment aims to correct this situation.

soundstaging in simple terms refers to being able to 'visualize' or place where the singer or instrunment is when you listen to the music. if in the recording the singer is standing in the center and has a violin on the left playing, when you listen to it thru your car speakers, you should be able to hear or feel that they are exactly where they should be. I listened to a CD used for tuning b4, and part of it is a series of single drum beats, 7 in total, and if you system is set up properly you can hear each of them clearly moving from left to right across your dash board, with the 4th beat right in the middle.

my 2 cents [scholar]

In pychoacoustics theory, staging can be achieved using both time (time alignment) or level differences (Balance). Why don't home hifi receivers come with time alignment but instead have balance?

oh... think this is beyond my 2 cents already... haha... really don't know.

my stab at this? perhaps in home setting they already assume u are sitting somewhat in the middle, and so use balance to compensate imperfections in room acostics, while in the car setting, there is nothing wrong with the latter, but the former is very skewed...

others?
