Hi All,

 

Booked a set of Federal SS595 Tyres 195/55/15 (ultra high performance at $64 w/out gst) at the motorshow...just checking with you all if any1 of you have heard of these tyres...apparently these are quite popular Downunder and they are manufactured in Taiwan. The threads on the tyres are really aggressive...any feedback???

Apparently so....that's why wondering how will it perform in the wet....anyway, will give a FR once I get it fixed on my ride and have done about 5k on them... [sly]

I'm actually interested in this brand Federal Tires and in my search on the net, I found the following experiences:

The overall experience is rather good and from what the guy says, they made tires for Bridgestone before.

 

Below is this other guy who retails the tire:

I work for Les Schwab, one of the companies that retails alot of Federal products. They are all fairly low ball construction with the exception of the SS595. It gets sticky (not greasy) when warmed up which is in direct contrast to anything but an R compound tire in my experience.

 

They grip as well as a Toyo T1S (personal experience). They wear longer (maybe 5000 miles, harder compounding), have stiffer sidewalls, and carry a sidewall bead guard. This is in case you get a little close to a curb and rather than tear into your new rims, they brush the 1/4" extended sidewall near the bead lip.

 

Disadvantages-

 

They arent predictable in my opinion. Their breakaway point isnt as consistent as some tires that I have tried in the past. While they do last longer than T1S's (which they somewhat resemble), they still dont last much more than 25K.

 

They DO NOT LIKE water, even on an AWD car. They get very loose with anything more than mild rain/dampness. Because of the tread pattern (very pronounced arrow shape) they dont shed water very effectively and tend to hydroplane sooner than most other tires in my experience.

Have done approx. 1k on the SS595 and here are the initial feedback

 

1) Great tyres in the dry, stopping is quite up to par with LM 702s by Dunlops. slightly more squicking noise in MSCPs. [thumbsup]

2) not too great during high speed conering (100-120kmh on a gradual right hand curve), the relatively soft side walls does not instill lots of confidence as there is quite a fair bit of bouncing and I don't think its due to my suspensions. [:/][:/]

3) wet performance seems ok but have not really pushed them to the limit...best was just touching 100kmh.. but what the report said on the SS595 not liking water seems to be true... they do aquaplane earlier compared to the LMs. Gripwise in the wet still okie...maybe because its still new. Tend to have a fair bit of wheelspin when doing a stationary hard launch in the wet.... [shakehead][shakehead]

4) noisewise still okie and relatively quiet now as they are still new.

 

Just spoke to the marketing manager the other day and according to him, they have gotten some positive feedback from a bunch of guys from Subaru Forum...Maybe we can check it out with them on their tyres performance as I think they do push the tyres quite hard.

 

Lets see how they perform after 5k...

Yup...I thought so too when I was told the price during the car show...that's why I grabbed it without much thought....40K km??? that's about the lifespan of any tires right?? Not too sure if the price is still the same... what the sales manager told me is that they wanted to do a soft launch here that's why they were offering at $64...better still, the tyres were hot off the pressing machine (manuf in week 37 of 04)

I haven't tried the S03s but I would suggest S02s instead. I have a friend who was on S03s that had great handling and hard sidewalls.. ....etc all the good stuff, but it was not predictable enough when it came to feeling when the grip would break as the sidewalls were very stiff.

 

Go for something with slightly softer sidewalls like the S02. You'll know when you are pushing the car too hard.

 

The S03s that my friend was on, just broke grip and it was too late.

The new Fed 595 Evo is pretty as well, tried them in PG and they were much better than SS595.

 

Another great tyre for the munds spent is Hankook R-S2.
