UMW Toyota recalls Vios, Altis, Yaris, Alphard in M’sia for front passenger airbag inflator replacement

Following Toyota Motor Corp’s massive global recall to replace Takata airbag inflators involving millions of cars worldwide, including some of its best-selling models, local distributor UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has announced a “special service campaign” a.k.a. product recall for Malaysia.

This is a big one, and it involves the replacement of the inflator module in the airbag system on the front passenger side in various models. They are the Vios, Corolla Altis, Yaris and Alphard manufactured between October 2007 and December 2011. UMWT says that around 80,000 units are involved, and the figure only includes cars distributed by the official channel. This latest recall is an expansion of earlier campaigns to fix the same Takata airbag issue that has dogged almost all the major Japanese brands. It is the auto industry’s biggest ever recall.

The defect is due to propellant degradation occurring after prolonged exposure to high humidity and temperatures. The inflators contain a non-desiccated, phase stabilised ammonium nitrate propellant that may cause the rupture of the module. If it does, metal fragments will pass through the airbag as it inflates and shoot into the cabin, leading to serious injury or death.

UMWT says that its princpal TMC is currently working on obtaining the necessary parts for the recall. Once the parts are available, UMWT will notify owners, requesting them to bring their cars to an authorised Toyota service centre for a job that will take from one to three hours. All costs will be borne by UMWT.

The company says that it is aware that some customers who are not the first registered owners of the affected cars may not be contactable, and they should contact Toyota service centres or get in touch by Toyota Freephone at 1800-8-TOYOTA (869682). Toyota is also currently updating its VIN database and owners can check their car’s VIN number at this dedicated page.

The inclusion of the Alphard raises questions about the fate of the many grey imports running in Malaysia. We reached out to UMWT and a spokesman said that yes, grey imported Alphards/Vellfires manufactured in the same period (October 2007 and December 2011) will be covered, although it’s only normal for the company to take care of its own customers first. Still, that’s good news for owners of the grey big MPVs. The online VIN checker is only for UMWT cars, so you’ll have to call Toyota Freephone.

Just sharing bro..

I drive 2005 Altis with mileage now 196k..

I have experience "engine burning oil before"

You only found out oil level low at 10K km?

How low?If just at dip stick low mark..still ok for me..

Whats your mileage now?

High mileage engine for me now using either a bit thicker oil but don exceed 40 also with engine addictive..

Oil change every 5k to 7k..Check oil level once a week..

I changed PCV and rectify much of top engine gasket leak..

Foul plug change due carbon built up..

Replace ignition coil..

So far not experiencing 'Blue Smoke'..and dont want to.. [blush]

To check for this..after driving ..park off engine..wait a few minutes..restart engine with slight rev..see any smoke during first puff..

Thats the possibility of engine oil and petrol mix..major worn ring..

That care then bro ..happy trying and just sharing..

I am not a mechanic but just a normal car guy.. [thumbsup]

Hi!

Anyone has a decent Toyota SE to recommend, please? The ones I've met seems CMI... :(

Urgent, as likely to confirm a purchase this weekend.

Hey bro! You can try looking for Irene Lee @ Leng Kee. Or there's this guy I bought my 07 Vios from at ubi. I forgot his name. But he is an Uncle. Quite short and he wears specs. He is very clear in explaining everything and he is very upfront and not like normal SE that says this but later says another.

My family and I bought a 2015 Toyota Wish from a Mr. Philip Lai at Ubi Showroom.

He may come off as a traditional uncle type, but he has years in the industry and his pretty good. He even offer me after sales advice when there were problems.

In addition he is a very good SE, he does not hard sell but goes based on your needs.

Thank you, LemuelWong & y2kjericho86:wub:

Hurried down to the Leng Kee showroom on Sunday. Reached at 5.20 p.m. & was done with the paperwork by 6.45 p.m.

Was served by one Nicholas Ang. Decent chap.  [cool]

Did not get a chance to ask for "Irene Lee" as no one bothered to ask when we stepped in.  [shakehead]

Hi bro, don't be upset no one bother to serve you, This is normal in Toyota showroom because you want Toyota and not Toyota need you. The SE attitude are now way better than 10 years ago when COE is $12K...when I bought my Vios. People queqe to sign the paper...they don't have time to entertain you. [furious]

My 2.4L Camry only clocks around 6 - 7km/L. Far from the specs of 10km/L....

I was also clocking 6km plus.

After i went servicing to change Engine oil, transmission fluid, and brake fluid,

I clock 7.5 to 8.5km/l.

40 percentage highway, 60 percentage city driving.

Probably time to change the above.
