Skodee Neutral Newbie November 3, 2004 Share November 3, 2004 Wonder anyone noticed whether does your Octy's engine fan (bigger one) turn when you ignite your engine? I noticed only the smaller fan turned when I turn on the air-con but not the bigger fan. Do share with me if you had noticed anything. Thanks. ↡ Advertisement
C708 Neutral Newbie November 3, 2004 Share November 3, 2004 (edited) S, The main fan ( the larger one ) is the one that should turn FIRST when your car starts. The secondary fan is your air-con fan. So you were correct to observe that the smaller fan starts when your air conditioning is turned on. Symptoms of fan failure. Did you notice that your temperature is now higher than normal ?? If it is, then your fan is failing or has failed !! Better have it seen to........ IF you dont, it could cause a slew of other problems. Remember that Continental cars are designed for the cold.....not the crazy tropics where we turn on ( or abuse ) the air conditioning ALL the time !! XLR8 1st Gear November 4, 2004 Share November 4, 2004 Is your temperature needle at the center mark or more?

Beanoyip Turbocharged November 4, 2004 Share November 4, 2004 Oh, i just remembered something abt our octy cars. Do you guys notice, esp when never turn on the air con and drive. After a long drive or you drive it really hard. When you turn off the ignition. The fan still continues turning. I guess its just to cool down the engine or what. Sounds like a mini 'fan timer' built into it.
Virus 2nd Gear November 4, 2004 Share November 4, 2004 It's normal and was stated in the manual, the fan will continue to work until the engine temperature drop to acceptance level. It also mention the fan will move if you park under 'hot' sun and the sensor detect the temp is high.
Beanoyip Turbocharged November 4, 2004 Share November 4, 2004 Yea.. i was just about to post a qns on that. My toyota here, when i parked it under hot sun or high temp. When i start the engine, then that particular fan will work. Under cool conditions. It doesn't. Then i thought it was spoilt or not working.
Gendut 2nd Gear November 5, 2004 Share November 5, 2004 Another way to confirm your fan is not working, is when youre stuck in a jam, wou will hear your refrigerant whining. It is caused by the higher pressure drop across your expansion valve cos the refrigerant is not sufficiently cooled. When you hear this whine, turn off your aircon and the whine will disappear. This has happened to me so I should know. Also DIY'ed the fan change myself. Anyway I've got a spare fan in my storeroom that was only used for a month or two. PM me if you like. Skodee Neutral Newbie November 8, 2004 Author Share November 8, 2004 (edited) The fan is not spinning after engine starts... Looks like the recon part is not working after a few days....will get it check again at Volkshaven as I changed it there 2 weeks back due to engine stalled near them... Skodee Neutral Newbie November 8, 2004 Author Share November 8, 2004 Yup my temp sensor always at the centre though... wonder where is the sensor??? near engine? Is your temperature needle at the center mark or more?
Skodee Neutral Newbie November 8, 2004 Author Share November 8, 2004 Hi, Thanks for the advice & offer...will let you know if I need the fan again....will not be changing their recon parts there anymore...
Yeobh 4th Gear November 8, 2004 Share November 8, 2004 Whe you start the car , the coolant is consider at cold stage and therefoe there is not need for the ECU to activate the fan. At this stage your fuel injection will be on reach side because the exhaust monitoring system is in open loop - that means the lambda sensor located at the exhaust will remains idle and will not help to regular fuel injection etc . The whole idea is to get the cooling systme up to operating temp. Once the cooling system is in operating temp the system exhaust monitoring system will switch over to close loop system. The cooling fan will be activate on and off just to maintain the coolant at optium temp.
Skodee Neutral Newbie November 8, 2004 Author Share November 8, 2004 Thanks for some very useful info...perhaps i should drive a very long distance and then stop to take a look at the fan...by that time should be pretty hot
Portblack Neutral Newbie November 8, 2004 Share November 8, 2004 Jus ram the car for 400m then check.. faster...
Yeobh 4th Gear November 9, 2004 Share November 9, 2004 No need for long distance drive - just drive untill you see the temp gauge in operating temp. Park the car and allow to idle - after awhile the fan should kick in.
Steady Neutral Newbie November 9, 2004 Share November 9, 2004 (edited) If you had parked your car under hot sunlight and the engine has been "warmed up" by the heat radiating from the sun, the fan should also switch on once you start your car. Believe that the fan would turn even if engine has been switched off. Some sensor built-in to keep the engine compartment cool during hot days. (Oops, this was mentioned before! Sorry, did not read the post carefully.) Try it. Edited November 9, 2004 by Steady ↡ Advertisement
