When To Change Tyres?

Which of the following criteria would you adopt to decide if your set of tyres should be replaced?

1. When it has covered a certain mileage (what mileage?)

2. When it is of certain age (2 yrs? 3 yrs?)

3. When only 1.6mm of thread is left (if earlier why?)

Am asking because my Aspec DBs are 20 mths old and have covered 48,000km, but the thread never seems to wear off. Looks like can last 2-3 more years. If I am still satisifed with their performance, is there a need to replace them?

All three play a part in when the tyre needs to be changed. In fact, I would say the recommended way was when one of the above 3 is breached first.

Mileage and age causes invisible changes to the naked eye such as the hardening of the rubber and weakening of the structure. The last one is pretty obvious to most people.

If you decide not to go with these rules and go with your gut feel about them, you're indeed on your own. Your life is dependent on your rubber contacts and imho, it's not worth saving on them. [gossip]

Thanks for your advice.

As a general guideline, what would the cut off mileage or tyre life be for us to change the tyres? In my case, the threads can still last very long so this is criteria is definitely out.

in sg weather sometimes it's not possible 4 our rubbers to last as long as it actually can.. but with proper care n check, it can last till the thread runs out.

I would say that I would start monitoring the performance of the tyres after 2 years. They usually last 3 years for me. [sly]
