ConocoPhillips engine oil

If you have been to Autobaccs, you will have seen them selling Conoco Syncon 5W40 engine oil. It is quite ex by my standards and Conoco lubes are the cheapest around actually.

There are no ads for Conoco lubes and here is a background to why:

Conoco and Phillips merged in late 02. They sell the Motorcraft brand of engine oil to Ford and have made an aggreement with Ford not to sell or advertize their stuff on TV. They can only be bought from wholesale warehouses or petrol stations.

If you have been to BITOG and read all the UOAs, Motorcraft oils are very very good thanks to ConocoPhillips excellent hydrocracking technology. Please note that the oil is Group III, confirmed! It is as good as the PAO oil in the market namely Amsoil, RP and even M1.

FYI, the oil can be bought in Projet stations in MY. The range that corresponds to the Motorcraft range in the US. Namely Hydroclear Super All Season 10W30 and 5W30. Retails for MYR70-79. If you are lucky, you can find the 5W20 which all the guys in BITOG rave about. The additive package is very good but the oil is more susceptible to oxidation than the Group IV and V synthetics. FYI, Projet is the fuel division of ConocoPhillips. In other countries like the UK and Turkey, the company is known simply as Jet. This explains why you can find Conoco oil in Projet stations in Malaysia.

What about Syncon? Syncon is a full Group IV PAO, confirmed! So it is good oil but should not be more expensive than Amsoil or M1 and definitely more expensive than Hydroclear Super All Season.

SG only sells the Syncon 5W40 at Autobaccs.

Projet is the only place you can find the Hydroclear Super All Season. Please note that full syn oil is Syncon with Group IV PAO. Hydroclear is not really syn oil in the eyes of many people who know oil. It is known as Group III hydrocracked oil.

5W30 @ MYR79

10W30 @ MYR72

20W50 @ MYR70

It is 100% Group III compared to lets say Castrol Magnetec which is basically Group II/II+ mixed with a small percentage of Group V (esters).

I forgot. Castrol will call their Group III oils "synthetic". Conoco will call their Group III oils "mineral". So who should you trust wink.gif. I find Conoco more honest in this regard compared to the marketing "genius" of Castrol.

City driving? As low as you can go! I'm using 5W20! If you are in Malaysia everytime have to whack highway, 40wt oil. So for your case, 5W30 is best since it is available. Hard to find 5W20 unless you like me buy RP.

We travel in SG the most at 110kph which is peanuts compared to continuous whacking on E3 for 2-4hrs at 4k RPM. Trips also don't last more than an hr and stop-go traffic. Low wt oil is good for this.

RP = Royal Purple.

For 40bucks get a full PAO synthetic? Where got find in the market? The oil will not feel the difference. They only feel engine temperature and not ambient temperature.

Syn oil does not cook and give off all sludge.

Royal Purple is fully syn oil! The pour point actually gives it away. Sunoco on the other hand is semi syn. Remember, our laws here can be quite lax. In US, you bluff the customer, the customer can jump on you and make you pay. Here, you bluff the customer, customer no power to jump on the seller.

If you like dino oil but very very high quality dino oil which is almost like full syn oil, Conoco Hydroclear. Cheap and good. RP is very cheap fully syn oil.
