How can an aged alternator affect fuel consumption

depends how you look at it. Weak alternator will cause you to crank more times than neccesary so in this case fuel is being used more. In fact this will cause your car's battery to go flat faster than normal.

battery is ok, maybe I'd only know it in 1 yrs' time as the battery is considered new.

reason being that when I brought my ride in for engine diagnostic, the mech mentioned that my alternator is weak...so I guessed that it's not giving my engine the sufficient charge it needs to fully power the car..Hence inducing more drag to the engine than power...

As the above title.

Your comments and suggestions pls.

Anything that has to do with the belting of your car (which is turn by the engine) ... air cond belt, alternator belt and drive (timing) belt will have effect on the Fc of your car.

So if older or faulty (going to die one) componenent is running, it will have a load on the engine so your FC will not be good. That's is why you need to maintain your belts and make sure components are properly oiled.

Many moons ago I use to import large quantity ( by 20 ft containers) of used alternator , starters, compressors, tyres, radio etc from Japn scrap yards. Engines will only be stripped off the components parts are those that have no resales values. They are all sold as scrap metal to steel mills. The engines are then stripped for components and type of metals. The components are sold as used parts.

I sold the starters and altenators in bulk to re-cond shops in Singapore , Malaysia and as far as Cambodia and Burma. Basically re-cond shops sell their re-cond starters and alternators in 3 grades A, B & C. "C" grade basically only undergo cosmetics overhaul.

everything all new, with the exception of the alternator. New belts, pulleys etc etc.

During the diagnostic, mech say alternator is at 13.4V. Wonder if this can affect FC.

what would be a nominal voltage for the alternator ? Mine was 13.4 V

Any place to recommend to get a cheap n good recond alternator ? My friend paid abt 200 plus for his re-cond alternator.
